What Happened to Jews of Vienna, Austria, "capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire"

Nadene Goldfoot
Vienna, Austria  to Athens, Greece

The Eastern Roman Empire had its capital in Constantinople, Turkey, an empire which extended far and wide by the year 637, including Palestine.  Justinian (527-65) had elaborate anti-Jewish laws in his Code, issued a decree in 553 which interfered with the conduct of the synagogue services!  Heracleius in 614 issued an edict ordering the conversion of the Jews.  Then the practice of Judaism was forbidden by the next emperors; Leo in 723, Basil 1 in 873-874; by Romanus Lucapenus in 932-6, and this last decree finds Jews living in Vienna.  The fledgling Christians were so quick to come down on the heads of the Jews, but slow to turn Europe onto their religion.  It's been about 900 years since Jesus had died and the religion was just catching on and even then contained many pagan elements.

Before Vienna had embraced Christianity and accepted Jews into their land as well, religion was pagan.  "A raid made in the Lower Danube region in the  830s is the earliest event which can unequivocally be connected to the Hungarians.   Muslim sources described the Hungarians as star- and fire-worshipers.   Vessels holding food and drink found in thousands of pre-Christian burials evidence the Hungarians' traditional belief in afterlife.   Prohibitions incorporated in Christian regulation also suggest that pagan Hungarians made sacrifices at groves and springs.  What went on in Hungary most likely was true of Vienna.

Jews were living in Vienna in the early 900s even though  at the same time, Christianity was being introduced into the land of Hungary and Austria by  Byzantine Christianity.   Steps towards the adoption of the new faith were taken by Géza, the head of the Hungarian tribal federation (c. 972–997) who supported Western missionaries. The reception of Christianity was enforced by legislationing the reign of Géza's son, Stephen I (997–1038). Some tenets of pagan belief were incorporated into the Christian vocabulary of the Hungarian language.  Hungary and Vienna were neighbors.  "Stephen  was crowned the first King of Hungary in 1000 or 1001 after he had defeated his pagan opponent, Koppány, the oldest member of the Árpád dynasty.

Even so, Jews received a special dwelling quarter near the ducal palace and were permitted to live in houses elsewhere in the city early on.  This was even before some Jews became helpers of the court.

Rabbi Samson Wertheimer, my DNA relativeRabbi Wertheimer (1658-1724) was a court Jew, born in Worms, Rhineland/Germany,  and court Jews were especially prominent in the Vienna court. Rabbi Wertheimer had gone to Vienna in 1684 to join the bank of his uncle, Samuel Oppenheimer, and soon became a court banker.  His uncle Samuel Oppenheimer was a banker and he lived with him.  Even Court Jews were not allowed to live in Vienna.  Jews were exclused from all classic trades and handicrafts to make a living.  This forced them to deal with money lending.

After all, Jews had a special place in Vienna, being court Jews in the 1600-1700s  who had loaned money to the Emperors to keep in business.  "Court Jews enjoyed special privileges;  were exempted from wearing the Jewish badge and could live anywhere, maintaining the necessary Jewish religious functionaries in their place of residence."   To think that ALL Jews except these who loaned money to the emperors, had to wear a badge is disgusting.  That's the position, that of a 2nd or 3rd class citizen, Jews were in.  The court Jews used their position to try to help their brethren.  The contribution of industrial production and commerce to the Austrian economy led to the decision to allow Jews to acquire property.

By the 1200s, the Jewish position had worsened under pressure from the burghers, and a ghetto was instituted.  by 1406, the Jewish quarter was burnt, and in 1421 Jews were killed or expelled as the result of a ritual Murder accusation.  However, some Jews did live here in the 1500s.

Along came the 1600s, that had some familiarity to the USAs 2001.  "Sept. 11 + 12 1683 spelt the victory of Western Christendom at the gates of Vienna against an overwhelming Islamic Ottoman Empire. "It pitted the Islamic nemesis led by Kara Mustafa, the Vizier of Sultan Mehmet IV, and the Ottoman forces consisting of Jannisaires and Tartars totalling 120,000, including some traitorous Protestant and Calvinistic allies from Europe, against the Hapsburg Holy Roman Empire led by Count Ernst Rudiger Von Staremberg of Austria along with Charles V (Duke of Lorraine) and Leopold I (Holy Roman Emperor) and with Polish king, Jan Sobieski III, spearheading the final attack.

This was also the era of the Court Jews of which I have found to have had relatives who were a part of it.  Jews in this period who maintained trade connections with Poland, Italy and Turkey, but found themselves in hot water again and were banished  in 1670!  After 1675 they dared to return again, this time with a special license after 1675, but no synagogue could be established until 1826.

Vienna's Ringstrasse
Jews participated in the 1848 revolution and finally received equal rights in 1867.  Before, Jews who wanted to live in Vienna had to pay a "tolerance tax" and had no rights whatsoever.
Born: August 18, 1830 in Schonbrunn Palace, Vienna, Austrian Empire
Died November 21, 1916 at age 86 in same place as birth

Franz Joseph I  was Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia.
He ruled from December 2, 1848 to November 21, 1916.
Lots went on sale in May 1860 but by February Franz Josef issued a decree permitting Jews to purchase and own land and homes for the 1st time.  Why?  He needed cash to finance the project of building!  Affluent Jews bought lots and invested fortunes in erecting palaces , thinking this was the beginning of a new era for cooperation between Jews and Christians.  Now they could even be like the nobility from the inner city.  55% of the Ringstrasse lots were sold to 44% of the Jews. Until then, only rich Jews could afford to live in Vienna who had no real-estate holdings.

Ringstrasse, where wealthy Jews were able to build luxurious homes.

Young Emperor Franz Josef I  dreamed up building the Ringstrassse, which  was a building constructed in 1872 on a wide, ring-shaped boulevard because the emperor wanted to connect the inner city with the outer districts of Vienna.  He demolished the medieval walls and fortifications to build on the cleared land.

Many became prominent in political, economic, cultural and scholastic life of the city in the 19th and 20th centuries.  In 1866, Austria was defeated by the Prussian army  in the 7 Weeks' War which led to the weakening of the monarchy but brought about the liberal constitution of 1867 that granted freedom and abolished legal discrimination against Jews.  "Austria’s defeat was a telling blow to Habsburg rule; the Empire was transformed via the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 into the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary in the following year.  Additionally,  Austria was also excluded from Germany."
Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) born in Budapest, Hungary,
studied in Vienna (1878-1884), founder of Political Zionism.  1891-1895
was a Paris reporter and Dryfus trial caused him to realize position of Jews;
wrote book, THE JEWISH STATE. Der Judenstaat.

ANTI-SEMITISM was spread from the 1880s under Karl Lueger (1844-1910). He was an  Austrian politician, mayor of Vienna, and leader and founder of the Austrian Christian Social Party.  He is credited with the transformation of the city of Vienna into a modern city.   At the same time, this is when Jews from Russia were returning to Palestine with the new proponent by Theodor Herzl of Vienna of Zionism.

In February 1908, Hitler moved to Vienna  with the goal of attending the art academy and becoming a great artist.   Sixty years before him, Hitler's father also came to Vienna seeking opportunity. At that time the Hapsburg Empire was ruled by Emperor Franz Josef. When Adolf Hitler arrived, it was still ruled by him, although he was now senile and under the influence of corrupt ministers.  His empire, which had ruled Austria and surrounding countries for centuries, was now in great decline.  Vienna, however, remained a city of opportunity and attracted a multicultural population from all over the empire.

WWI of 1914-1918 found Jewish  refugees from Galicia, Hungary and Bukovina coming into Vienna.  At this time there were 17 synagogues in Vienna with one being Sephardic.

The flourishing Jewish chapter in Vienna’s history has found a sinister ending,  with the annexation in 1938 when there were 180,000 Jews living in the capital.  Germany, led by Hitler and his Nazis, had invaded Austria.  A ferocious persecution of Jews began immediately.  About 1/3 of the Jews managed to emigrate, but almost all the rest were being deported to extermination camps.    Of Vienna’s 94 synagogues and temples,  only the Jewish City Temple survived entirely.  After WWII, survivors from Hungary, Poland and Czechoslovakia went to Vienna.  Nowadays the Jewish Community has about 7000 members in Vienna and has found its home in the second district.   The Central Synagogue is situated in Seitenstettengasse in the First District. "  The Jewish population in 1991 was 6,000 in Vienna.

Jewish victims from Hungary; 6 million altogether
who perished in the Holocaust
" Vienna remained  the capitol of the Holy Roman Empire for centuries." Christianity, especially Roman Catholicism,  is still the predominant religion in Austria and has a long and intense tradition."

Pope Pius XI (1922–1939). Warsaw, Poland forced his departure as Nuncio. Two years later, he was pope. He signed concordats with numerous countries, including Lithuania and Poland. On March 12, 1938, Germany annexed Austria and Hitler had marched in with his Nazis. Austrian crowds cheered them.   From about 1929 to 1939, Germans were outwardly anti-Semitic towards Jews.  Did he not see it coming?  Warsaw in 1939 had 360,000 Jews. It was in October 1940 that the occupying Germans established a crowded ghetto for Polish Jews, reaching 1/2 million in the ghetto.

Pope Pius XI, born Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti, reigned as Pope from 6 February 1922 to his death in 1939. He was in Poland,  a state newly restored to existence, but still under effective German and Austro-Hungarian control, before becoming the Pope.   He was the first sovereign of Vatican City from its creation as an independent state on 11 February 1929.
Pope Pius XII seated in the Sedia Gestatoria in 1939 the year my Jewish uncle finally
got out of Germany in May
and sailed to the USA, one of the last to be able to leave.

Pope Pius XII (Italian: Pio XII), born Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli,  reigned as Pope from 2 March 1939 to his death in 1958.   The German/Soviet invasion of Catholic Poland  began during his term.  Hitler appointed a new Nazi government, and on March 13 the Anschluss was proclaimed.  Austria existed as a federal state of Germany until the end of World War II.  Pius XII reiterated Church teaching on the "principle of equality"—with specific reference to Jews: "there is neither Gentile nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision".   The forgetting of solidarity "imposed by our common origin and by the equality of rational nature in all men" was called "pernicious error".  Catholics everywhere were called upon to offer "compassion and help" to the victims of the war. The Pope declared determination to work to hasten the return of peace and trust in prayers for justice, love and mercy, to prevail against the scourge of war.  The letter also decried the deaths of noncombatants.

Some Jews had tried to escape after May  to go south and hope to cross the Black Sea by

ship to Palestine.  On December 30, 1939, a river boat, Uranus, had 1,210 Jews who had left

Vienna and Prague  in November..  The Danube began to freeze over, and Yugoslav government

did not allow boats to proceed to get to Palestine.  They were held in Yugoslavia for 9 months.

There, early in 1940, 207 teenagers were saved by receiving Palestine certificates and were

allowed to proceed by train, but the remaining 1,003 were massacred at Sabac in October 1941,

within 6 months of the German conquest of Yugoslavia.  (made into a film) (‘The Darien Dilemma’ - a film by Erez & Nahum Laufer)

Just think.  Equal rights came in 1867, but anti-Semitism began in 1880; giving Jews 13 years supposedly of normality.  Then from 1918 to 1938 they suffered from unrest with anti-Semitism building up in the 20s and 30s till 1938 came.  The Jews never had a chance.  "At the 2001 census, 73.6% of the country's population was Roman Catholic."

Palestinians Want Jerusalem's Very Jewish Western Wall: Working on UNESCO

Nadene Goldfoot

The Palestinians are now trying to say that Jews have no history to the Western Wall aka Wailing Wall in Jerusalem where Jews go to pray.  They have a lot of Arab support in the UN and are presenting their own version of the history of Jerusalem.  They recognize only the Islamic connection to the Holy City, City of David, Jerusalem.

View of Western Wall lower right and above is Temple Mount with Mosque in Center
These Arabs are trying to make out that the Western Wall is part of Islam's al-Aqsa Mosque.  To do this, they have presented a terrible resolution, showing they know nothing about history pre-Islam's Mohammed.  "The proposal is contained in a draft resolution to the executive board of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The agency formally designates cultural treasures around the world."  The Palestinians got 6 states behind this proposal;  "Algeria, Egypt, Kuwait, Morocco, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates."  I am truly surprised at Egypt for doing this since they are at peace with Israel.  This is a terrible thing to propose to a friend.  I suppose we should claim the pyramids  in Egypt being Jewish slaves built them, then, and a few cities.

Here are some facts they are repressing in everyone's minds that they administer.

. After 400 years of slavery in Egypt, Moses came along in 1351 BCE and took the Israelites out of bondage and headed for their old home in Canaan.  After 40 years of wandering,  they arrived in 1271BCE when Moses died and was buried outside the land and then Joshua took over.

Joshua, fighting to possess Canaan
The 12 tribes of Jacob, aka Israel, were told where to settle using Moses's plan, administered by Joshua.  650,000 had started on the Exodus.
The 1st census taken showed 603,550 people
The 2nd census taken showed 601,730 people  with a loss of 1,820 from the  40 year march.

Joshua, Judge of Israel
The people were first ruled by Judges, Yehoshua- Joshua of the tribe of Ephriam, in about 1270 BCE  being the first. He was followed by 15 more;   Othniel, Ehud, Shamgar, Deborah and Barak, Gideon, Abimelech, Tola, and Jair.
Deborah, a Judge
Then they had the Ammonite rule of Jephitah, Ibzan, Elon, Abdon, Samson, Eli and Samuel, all Jewish judges.

King Saul died fighting the Philistines and so did his 3 sons.
The people saw that their neighbors had kings, so clamoured and insisted on being governed by one, also.  Saul was chosen as the first king in the 1000s BCE, son of Kish of the tribe of Benjamin.  The Israelites were in danger militarily from the Philistines and Ammonites.  Samuel, a judge and prophet, had chosen Saul.  They had a victory and defended themselves against the Philistine danger and fought off the Moabites, Ammonites, and Arameans.

The next king was David who ruled from 1010 BCE to 970 BCE.  He was the youngest son of Jesse of the tribe of Judah, and was born in Bethlehem.  He had been Saul's armor-bearer and became Saul's son in law by marrying his daughter, Michal.

David's son, Solomon was the next king from 961-920 BCE and his mother was Bathsheba.  Politically, Solomon was called the King of Peace and was able to build the 1st Temple.  He had 1,000 wives and concubines.  Solomon was able to rest due to his father's achievements to protect the realm which extended from Egypt to the Euphrates and was the most energetic in the entire region.  Less war meant they were able to develop in the cultural sphere of the arts of historiograph, parables, and elegant writing developed as well as several biblical works such as Song of Songs, Ecclesiates, Psalm 72.  Solomon was widely known for his wisdom.  Who hasn't heard the story of how he decided between 2 women as to who a baby belonged?  He used psychology.

When Solomon died in 920 BCE, the southern half of Israel broke off to create Judah from which Jews take their name.  They kept Jerusalem as their capital while Israel took Samaria.  Israel chose an Ephraimite to be king, Jeroboam, while Judah had as king a son of King Solomon, Rehoboam.  Both started serving in 933 BCE.

Israelites being led away by Assyrians.  Israel lost territory of land east of Jordan River, Galilee, and Philistia, Tyre, Moab and Edom became Assyrian provinces.  Shalmaneser took Samaria and Sargon captured it in 721 BCE
Assyria attacked Israel in 722-721 BCE and led Israelites into captivity.  Hoshea was the king at the time, and his reign ended in 721 BCE.

Sargon annexed the country, and deported 27,290 Israelites to Assyria and Media.  He replaced them with Syrian and Babylonian prisoners.

He was the last king of Israel which had lasted from 1271 BCE with the take-over of the land as dictated to do by G-d to 721 BCE, a total of  550 years.  Remember that the USA is only 239 years old.  If we even counted from 1620 when the first pilgrim ship, the Mayflower landed, it would only be 395 years of being on the North American land.
Nebuchadnezzar
As for Judah,  they were able to have another 124 years of happiness before the Babylonians with their king Nebuchadnezzar came along in 597 BCE and also carted away Jews into captivity.  They did more damage in 586 BCE by repeating their actions.  .Judah's last king was Zedekiah whose reign ended in 586 BCE.  Counting Israel's days of which Judah was part of and adding on these 124 more years, this gives the Judeans or Jews,  the land lasting 674 years of continuance- but not ending the time Jews live here.  That has been going on with a smaller Jewish population that has been under many countries' powers, but hasn't turned into another county such as Palestine.

Working on Temple in Jerusalem after destruction
The Temple was rebuilt and called the 2nd Temple from 538 to 515 BCE.

General Bar Kokhba; Bar Kosiba Simeon, nephew of Rabbi Eleazar of Modiin, descendant of King David
Palestine was simply the name of the land that the Romans gave it after fighting against the Jewish General Bar Kokhba for 3 years from 132 to 135 CE, the longest battle they had had.  They were so angry about it that they referred to the land from then on by the name of Palaestina, denoting the land of the Jewish enemy, the Philistines. Herodatus as called it Palaistine, and Palestine was the name the Ottoman Empire referred it as for 400 years, ending their hold when they lost WWI in 1917 as their entire empire was lost except Turkey.

However, the tribe of Judah, the largest of the 12 tribes,  was filled in with the tribe of Benjamin, and they all were able to live and continue on the land.  The Romans came along and occupied the land in 63 BCE.  They put in their choice of  leaders from the Jewish population, and Herod was chosen as king.

70 CE, destruction of 2nd Temple and Jerusalem, scattering of Jews who were kept out by Romans
The Romans destroyed Jerusalem and burned the 2nd Temple down in 70 CE, 133 terrible years after entering.  They had ruled with an iron hand, hanging thousands of Jews on crosses for minor infringements of their power and rule, including the Christian leader, Jesus.
Assigned areas where 12 tribes of Jacob (Israel) lived in Eretz Yisrael

Eretz Yisrael, The Jewish Homeland  itself, had been the home of the Jewish people from the time of Joshua entering in 1271 BCE till 70 CE, a total of 1,291 years, and the Palestinians are trying to say that we have no historical claim on the Western Wall, a wall attached to the Temple Mount.

2nd Temple of Solomon
The Western Wall/ Wailing Wall, or Kotel Maaravi, is part of the wall that was around Herod's Temple which was still standing in the Old City of Jerusalem so near the 2nd Temple, built  by the returnees from Babylon from  538 to 515 BCE, 23 years of rebuilding .

The 5 lower courses, each over 3 feet high, date back from the time of King Herod (ruled from 73 BCE to 4 BCE), son of an Idumean father named Antipater  and a Nabatean mother named Cypros, and appointed by the Roman Senate.  The Romans allowed him to handle internal affairs but not foreign policy.

Herod
The wall continues over 60 feet underground.  He had rebuilt  the Temple in Jerusalem on a magnificent scale and erected the 2 new cities of Sebaste and Caesarea.

Where Jews go first in Jerusalem; to the Wall
However, he was not a beloved king by the Jewish people.  The Jews were still attached to their former Hasmonean rulers that had been ousted.  Taxation was most heavy because of Herod's extravagance and because of Mark Antony demanding large sums from his protege.  Herod was known to murder his rivals  and even had his own wife, Mariamne, murdered along with their 2 sons, Alexander and Aristobulus and his firstborn, Antipater. He had learned well from the Romans.

Because it is close to the Temple Mount which holds the Jewish Holy of Holies of the 2nd Temple, this part of the wall was regarded as sacred as far back as the Talmudic Period.  Since the 10th century, regular services were held before it.  As the area in front of the Western Wall was Moslem property, a serious dispute broke out between Jews and Moslem in 1929, when the British were holding the mandate for Palestine.  Rioting broke out and Moslems were killing Jews.

Then in 1931, a special commission of the League of Nations regulated the rights of the parties.  From 1948, Jews were cut off from the Western Wall, which was under Jordanian control since their King Abdullah confiscated 80% of the Jewish Homeland and England allowed it to happen.  This happened despite a paragraph in the Israel-Jordan 1949 Armistice Agreement affirming Jewish right of access.

From 1948, Jews could not visit their wall until they had won the 1967 Six Day War.  Jordan had teamed up with other Arab countries against little Israel so lost that section of Jerusalem.

1967-Dancing in front of Western Wall in joy
The Wall has been since then under Jewish sovereignty for the 1st time since the 2nd Temple Period.  On Shavuot 1967, the 1st day the Wall could be visited by the public, 200,000 people went there, and since then is a focal point for Jews from all over the world to visit and pray.  Finally, East Jerusalem, the part Jordan had held till the 1967 War, was reunified in June 1967 with West Jerusalem.  They are now under one mayor.

As for any Islamic connection the Arabs have to East Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, this is what happened.  During the siege of Jerusalem during the Roman war, the 2nd Temple served as a center of military activity, and was destroyed by the conquering Romans in 70 CE.  A Roman Temple was later built on the site over it..  Since Mohammad died in 632 CE and his men spread out to conquer the world and spread Islam, a mosque, al Harim ash -Sherif,  has stood there where the 2nd Temple had stood and was built by Caliph Abd al-Malik around the year 738 CE to replace the temporary structure set up by Caliph Omar a century earlier, called  the Mosque of Omar/Dome of the Rock.. Supposedly Mohammad flew there on his flying horse before he died to see the mosque.   Omar was the 2nd caliph and ruled from 634 to 644.  It was during his reign that Palestine and Syria were conquered, and also Mesopotamia.  On his orders, most of the Jews were expelled from northern Arabia.  That's it.  That is the Islamic connection to Jerusalem's Temple Mount.  That's why Moshe Dayan was nice enough to let the Jordanian religious leader have dominion over their mosque site.

Khazarians, Karaites, Tatars and The Jews of Crimea

Nadene Goldfoot

Crimea has been a Russian peninsula in the Black Sea for years and years.  Way back in the 5th century BCE, there were Greek colonies here.  Jews settled there from the 1st Century BCE  before  the fall of Jerusalem from the Roman invasion but during their Occupation.  Roman soldiers had entered Crimea in 47 BCE and stayed until 330 CE.  Many were taken as slaves to work for the Roman army  in dirty work.   Inscriptions have been found dating this evidence.

Along came the 7th century and eastern Crimea was controlled by the prevailing Khazars which lasted until 1117.  Khazaria's ruling party had converted to Judaism, but did not make it a forced decision on their population.  It was a choice.  The royal family had converted, that we know.

Karaites Dance
By the 12th century, with Khazaria swallowed up by Russia, a large Karaite population lived in Crimea, centered at Eupatoria, Crimea.  Karaites were a Jewish sect that had rejected the Oral Law the rest of the Jewish family followed.  They had developed in the 8th century in and around Persia where the Jewish community was not long established and did not accept the discipline of the Babylonian gaonate (leadership).  They had been exposed to the Messianic hopes that came to them from the local  people.  There had been the Arab conquest of Persia in 640; the fall of the Umayyad dynasty in 750, and the urge toward social justice and asceticism which they had inhaled from the local population.  An ancient document from the 760s was written by the new Karaite, Anan Ben David who had interpreted the Tanakh (Bible) literally and tried to deduce a code of life without reference to the Oral law.

During the next few centuries, there were others who rejected the ancient Oral Law in this area. There were Karaites who traveled as far as to Egypt to make converts to their particular doctrine of Judaism.  They presented themselves as an austere asceticism that didn't go over very well.  Rabbis just avoided controversy with them until Saadyah Gaon, who died in 942, attacked them violently and tried to exclude them from the Jewish family.  Educated scholars emerged among the Karaites inaugurating the Golden Age of Karaite literature in  both Arabic and Hebrew.  Intermarriage between the 2 groups was common.  Karaite scholars studied along with rabbis and were influenced by them.

Karaites are Jews who take their shoes off before entering their shul.
During the 10th century, Karaite communities sprang up in the Byzantine Empire of Asia Minor, the Balkans, Damascus, Syria, Cyprus, Toledo Spain which had gone Moslem, etc.  The Palestinian and Egyptian centers surpassed those of Persia and Babylonia which dwindled and degenerated.  The Palestinian Karaites were most austere, and had settled in Jerusalem and mourned for the Temple and prayed continually for redemption.  Karaism spread to the Crimea by the 12th Century, to Troki, Lithuania in the 13th century, and Volhynia (Luck), after the Russian Karaites received from the Czars privileges and rights denied the Rabbanites.  The question begs, why did the Russians accept Karaites and not mainstream Judaism?  Probably because they saw them as having broken away from the mainstream Judaism like Christianity had, and Judaism had been so slandered.  They saw Jesus as having broken away.  They just didn't know what they had broken from, and it WAS NOT THE TORAH.  IN FACT, THEY WERE STRONG KEEPERS OF THE TORAH.

At ancient Theodosia, today's (Kaffa), the Jewish community preserved the Byzantine rite of prayer, published finally in 1793 and is now extinct.  .  Many Jews converted to Islam under Tatar rule which was from the end of the 13th century.  In 1346, the bodies of Mongol warriors of the Golden Horde who had died of plague were thrown over the walls of the besieged Kaffa (ancient Feodosiya). It has been speculated that this operation may have been responsible for the advent of the Black Death in Europe.  Kaffa had a synagogue there already in 909 CE, and a strong Jewish community was reported during the 13th to 15th centuries.  After the 18th century, the Jewish population declined and before WWII, numbered about 2,000.

These Crimean Tatars planned on boycotting elections last year in September. "More than 99%of Crimean Tatars boycotted the Moscow-orchestrated referendum on transferring Crimea to Russian control, Mustafa Cemilev said. Now, as a result of enormous Russian pressure, 98% of them will not participate in Sunday’s election in their occupied homeland."

Crimean Tatars were a Turkic ethnic group that formed in the Crimean Peninsula from the 13th to 17th centuries from Turkic tribes that moved to the land from the Asian steppes beginning in the 10th century and mixed in with the pre-Cuman population of Crimea.  The Tatars were led by Batu Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan in 1223 and they went into Kiev, Ukraine.  They constituted the majority of Crimea's population from the time of its ethnogenesis until the mid 19th century.  "Crimean Tatars are not Turkic but a mixture of many settlements from Europe to Asia."  When Tatars entered the area, they managed to cause the blending of Greeks, Armenians, Italians and Ottoman Turks on the southern coastline, Goths of the central mountains and Turkic-speaking Kipchaks and Cumans of the steppe which formed the Crimean Tatar ethnic group.  This Golden Horde of Tatars mixed with populations which had settled in Eastern Europe and Crimea since the 7th century; the  Tatars, Mongols, Khazars, Pechenegs, Cumans and Kipchacks.  They took slaves from the eastern Europeans that they invaded, such as Polish, Lithuanians, Russians, etc.
They emerged as a nation when the Crimean Khanate, which was an Ottoman Empire vassal state from the 15th to 18th centuries and was one of the great centers of slave trade for the Ottoman Empire.  Crimea had mostly adopted Islam in the 14th century following the conversion of Ozbeg Khan.  Note Khazaria went from pagan to Judaism, now Crimea switched to Islam.

The first Russian invasion of Crimea was in 1736. The Russian Empire annexed the territory of Crimea in the last quarter of the 18th century, after a number of bloody wars with the Ottoman Empire. The city of Simferopol had piped water, sewerage and a theatre where Moliere was performed in French.  Their port of Gozleve could be compared with Rotterdam. Bahcesarai, the capital,  was described as Europe's cleanest and greenest city.  "However, in the Crimea’s largest city of Sevastopol, which is considered a separate region of Crimea, there are very few Crimean Tatars and around 22 percent of Ukrainians, with over 70 percent of the population being Russians."

On the negative side, beginning in the 18th century, Crimean Tatars were known for annual and devastating raids into Ukraine and Russia.  The Crimean Khanate kept a huge slave trade with the Ottoman Empire and the Middle East which was the basis of their economy.  Kefe was one of the most important trading ports and slave markets.  Slaves and freedmen formed about 75% of the Crimean population.

May 1944, the USSR ordered the removal of a majority of the Tatar population from Crimea, including the families of Crimean Tatars serving in the soviet Army-in trains and boxcars to Central Asia, mainly to Uzbekistan.  In 1967, some were allowed to return to Crimea.  In 1989, the USSR condemned the removal of Crimean Tatars from their motherland as inhumane and lawless.  Today the Tatars make up 12% of the population in Crimea.  A large group still lives in Turkey and Uzbekistan.

The Genoese ruled southern Crimea in the 15th century and they prohibited interference with internal Jewish affairs.

From 1475 to 1783, the Turks ruled as the Ottoman Empire.  Chafut-Kale was the Jewish center then.  Many Jewish captives from the Ukraine next door were sent to Crimea after 1648.

Then the Russian conquest occurred in 1783 and many Ashkenazi Jews settled in Crimea.

In 1863, the Russian authorities granted the Karaites equal rights, but other Jews continued to suffer from disabilities until the 1917 Russian Revolution.

In the late 1920s, thousands of Jews were settled in Crimea under a plan to establish an autonomous Jewish agricultural center.  By 1939, the peak of Nazi takeover in Germany and disaster for the Jews, the Jewish population in Crimea numbered 50,000 including 40,000 Ashkenazim and 6,000 Krimchaks and 4,000 Karaites.

Almost everyone was wiped out by the Germans by 1941 and only a few, including some 300 Karaites, survived.

Karaites Praying
By   1980 the Jewish population was up to 25,614 from nothing.  Post WWII European Jews had made their way there for some unknown reasons; most likely common language and cultural reasons along with lack of finances.  They could have opted for Israel but didn't, no doubt because of the attacks previously happening there.  However, 1980 was a good year to make Aliyah.  I did.  Many Russians from the Motherland also did.  Why didn't the Crimean Jews?   Since 1948, the Karaites in Egypt moved to Israel, next door, settling in Matzliah and elsewhere.

By 1990 there were 25,000 Karaites living in Israel.

When you come right down to it, Karaite doctrine is conservative and more stringent than rabbinical Jewish teachings.  It forbids levirate marriage (marriage with a brother's childless widow.  Such a marriage is commanded where the brother has left no offspring; ) see Deut 25:5, 25:7-10, and Lev 18:16.  and all  Sabbath lighting and is stricter on laws of purity.  They have differences in laws of ritual slaughter that prevent social intercourse with the Rabbanites.  They do not celebrate Hanukkah as it is post-biblical.  They do not use tephillin or mezuzot in prayers.  The surprise is that they have evolved with their own Oral Law, showing that through time, this is something necessary that takes place.  Sometimes theirs even overlaps rabbinical traditiion.  They just don't sanctify our Oral Law.  They rarely discuss ethics and metaphysics.
