Marco Rubio's Position On Israel

Marco Rubio, born May 28, 1971,  in Miami, Florida; attorney and Senator from Florida and father of 4 children:  Amanda 15, Daniella 13, Anthony 9, and Dominic 7.  .
Marco Antonio Rubio, son of  Cuban immigrants  Mario and Oriales Rubio, is running for president of the USA.  His father found a job as bartender, while his mother worked cleaning houses and in sales at KMart.  . They had immigrated in 1956.   Marco's a Catholic whose parents have converted from Catholicism to the Morman religion.  Marco had attended a Southern Baptist church in Miami for 4 years.

He is only 44 years old, and was born on May 28, 1971 in Miami, Florida. He has 2 sisters, Veronica and Barbara and a brother, Mario.  He married his wife, Jeanette Dousdebes, Columbian American, a former Miami Dolphins cheerleader, in 1998.  In his Florida high school this 5'10" athlete played football  so had a football scholarship to a college in Missouri where he attended for a year.  Then he returned to Florida and with student loans, attended U of Florida and the U of Miami School of Law in the late 1990s where he became a lawyer.

He was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000 and left in 2008 due to term limits.  Then he taught at the Forida International University and started a new law firm.  In 2010 he became a US Senator and chairs a subcommittee on oceans, atmosphere, fisheries, the Coast guard, and also the foreign Relations on transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights and Global women's Issues.

In 2012, he wrote a book, "An american Son," a memoir, and received $800,000 in advance which he used to pay off his $100,000 student debt loan and fishing boat. He's also written another one, "American Dreams: Restoring Economic Opportunity for Everyone " a paperback.

Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, b: 1952, immigrated from Havana, Cuba in 1960 with parents,  is the most senior U.S. Representative from Florida, representing Florida's 27th congressional district. She served as Chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee from 2011–2013.  she was a former teacher. She continues to voice her strong support for the state of Israel and human rights.
While studying law at the U of Miami in about 1995, he interned for Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Republican from Florida, a Cuban American and supporter of Israel.  Rubio won the 2000 election in Florida and was the youngest speaker in 2005.  He was Florida's Speaker of the House for 2 years from 2006-2008.  Perhaps that's where he learned to speak so well.  In 2010 he became a US Senator.

On April 13, 2015, he decided to run for president, having been a senator for 6 years.  He's also a strong supporter of Israel, feeling it is within our national security interest that Israel is strong, and also that we have a moral obligation to make Israel safe and secure for the Jewish people in view of what happened during the Holocaust. He stands with Israel and feels the USA should do the same.  He's for unconditional USA support of Israel.

Rubio will act on the following issues:

1. Strengthen the USA-Israel Alliance and Israel's self -defence powers
2. Revoke Obama's Iran Deal of nuclear power-use sanctions
3. Defend Israel's combatting terrorism
4. Fight against delegitimizing Israel
5. Move USA embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv- (Trump also will do this)

He's also going to:

1. Repeal Obamacare
2. Oppose abortion
3. Immigration reform-border reinforcement
4. Iraq-US presence fighting IS
5. Against normal ties with Cuba (why did Cubans leave -regime terrible)

The Arab American Institute gave him a -2 on issues he voted on:
He voted for the following 4 resolutions:

1. Res 138:  UN to rescind the Goldstone report accusing Israel of targeting Palestinian civilians
2. Res. 185:  Reaffirming commitment to negotiate settlement of conflict of Israeli-Palestinians, and calling for a veto of any UN resolution on statehood without a settlement.
3. Res. 23:  supporting Israel in maintaining defensible borders or returning to armistice lines of 1967
4. S. 723:  The Birthright Citizenship Act-limits citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants born in USA-(own parents had documentation).

Marco Rubio co-sponsored a Resolution for Israeli Self-Defense.
They recognize these facts about Hamas:
1. Founded with goal to destroy Israel
2. Refuses to recognize Israel's right to exist.  Will not renounce violence or accept any agreements
3. Control Gaza Strip and fired 900 rockets and missiles this year-increasing from previous 2010 and 2011
4. Democratic Israel has right to self defense against terrorist attacks.
THEREFORE, CONGRESS WILL:
1. UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO SECURITY OF ISRAEL, A JEWISH DEMOCRATIC STATE TO HAVE SECURE BORDERS AND ITS RIGHT TO ACT IN SELF DEFENSE FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TERRORISTS

URGE UN SECURITY COUNCIL TO:
1. Condemn terrorist missile attacks against Israel
2. Encourage Obama to work diplomatically with international community to stop Hamas and other terrorists from launching rockets and missiles against Israel.
  (Source: SR599/HR813 112-SRes599 Nov. 16, 2012.)

His work has not gone unnoticed.  Billionaire Norman Braman of Florida backs Rubio.  He's been a long time friend and helper.  They traveled to Israel together after he was elected to the  US Senate in 2010.  Another billionaire, Sheldon Adelson, owner of the Israeli newspaper, Israel Hayom, also likes him very much.  Sheldon is also a very strong supporter of Israel.  .

What are We Going to Do With the Troubled Millennial Generation?

Capable, yet troubled Millennials
& their Postmodern Professors
The recent wave of anti-free speech rhetoric and anti-authority anarchy and bullying exhibited by college students around the country has many rationally minded citizens wondering, "Has the Millennial Generation gone mad?"

Or does the blame really belong to the multitude of pedagogical shepherds (professors) who have infected their flock with a viciously vitriolic diet consisting largely of anti-American professorial pap for far too long?

Freedom Focused holds that the teachers, not the students, are where most of the blame belongs, and the solution will likewise begin with educators. In the meantime, and on a side note, isn't it ironic how the millennial fold has begun to turn on the same intellectual hands that have been feeding their minds full of the very ideology with which their protege's are, in turn, presently condemning them with? It never ceases to amaze me how individuals and organizations really do reap what they sow in the long run.

The good news is that the game is not yet over for Millennials. Despite being labeled (and sometimes appropriately so) as a generation full of overly entitled, technology-addicted, excessively PC, whiny little brats, I hold out great hope for this generation -- the largest, and most diverse and dynamic in American history.

Millennials are an entitled generation filled with
individuals who can be as ignorant as they are intelligent.
It is true that these young people have collectively been unduly mollycoddled by parents, teachers, coaches, and professors who have raised up a generation that often believes they are too special to fail, too smart to take advice from their elders, too preeminent to take direction or accept discipline from authority figures, and too sophisticated to respect anyone from American history who was not marginalized or underprivileged. Indeed, every Millennial would do well to listen to David McCullough Jr.'s famous speech, You are Not Special. (Click HERE to watch McCullough's speech).

Despite the many real and perceived ills of the Millennial Generation, I remain optimistic about their future.  Indeed, I share in the sunny outlook of generational scholars William Strauss and Neil Howe, who have written extensively on the Millennial Generation and their potential for limiting their liabilities and shoring up their strengths in preparation for the national and international crucibles that they and we as a nation will face in the future.

Troubled Times likely lie ahead
for the Millennial Generation
Millennials presently have an ever-increasingly challenging world to navigate -- and it's likely to get a lot more dangerous and complex before it gets simpler and safer. According to Strauss and Howe, world history travels in predictable cycles, with the next great challenge, dubbed "The Crisis of 2020," right around the corner. This impending disaster will not be a minor national incident or difficulty, but an international calamity on part with the Great Depression and the two World Wars of the last century.

The good news is that Strauss and Howe (and I) are actually optimistic about how the Millennial generation will navigate this calamity -- so much so that they have written several books on the subject, including: Millennials Rising: The Next Great Generation and Millennials: A Profile of the Next Great Generation (Click on red links above to view/buy books).

While ALL generations will play a vital role in successfully maneuvering this global trial, the Millennial Generation will primarily provide the foot soldiers (literally and figuratively) that will, like the Greatest Generation, ultimately win the conflict. In Strauss and Howe's words, this coming crisis:
Will be a major turning point in American history and an adrenaline-filled moment of trial. At its climax, Americans will feel that the fate of posterity—for generations to come—hangs in the balance. This crisis will be a pivotal moment in the lifecycles of all generations alive at the time. The sense of community will be omnipresent. Moral order will be unquestioned with “rights” and “wrongs” crisply defined and obeyed. Sacrifices will be asked, and given. America will be implacably resolved to do what needs doing, and fix what needs fixing (From Strauss W. & Howe, N. (1991). Generations: The History of America’s Future, 1584-2069. New York, NY: Quill [William Morrow]. Page 382.)
How will this often troubled, yet potential-laden generation rise to the occasion of successfully meeting and defeating their (and our) destined challenges? The answer is through education, or in the case of many, re-education.

The Ultimate Handbook for
Reorienting the poisoned education
of Millennials in the United States
The good news is that the handbook for turning the tide of postmodern pedagogy and revisionist history into an authentic curriculum borne of Kantian Universal Laws and patriotic truth-telling has NOW been written.  It is called, Self-Action Leadership: The Key to Personal, Professional, & Global Freedom -- a comprehensive personal leadership guide for civic leaders, businesses, schools, families, individuals, and YES -- Millennials!

Self-Action Leadership emphasizes the following Pedagogical Points in an effort to reorient the misguided education that has poisoned the minds of so many Millennials and others, leading them to believe America is the problem, rather than the solution, in the world:

  • America, albeit not perfect, is still the most Magnanimous, Noble, and Exceptional Nation on Earth.
  • The primary solution to all micro and macro problems reside inside the minds and hearts of individuals, not outside in organizational entities.
  • Organizations, entities, and nations-at-large are not changed from the outside-in, but from the inside-out.
  • It is high-time that ALL individuals begin taking JFK's advice to ask what they can do for their Country, instead of the other way around.
  • Universal Laws exists and govern the natural consequences of all individual and organizational decisions.
  • Long-term solutions to problems do not originate in blaming others for what happened in the past; they are found in proactive personal changes made in the present and future.
  • A real right (good) and real wrong (evil) exist in the world; truth is therefore not relative, but absolute, and is governed by Universal Laws of physics and metaphysics.
  • A clarion call for an Age of Authenticism to eclipse the pernicious, perjurious, and prurient period of postmodernism that has dominated Western culture since the end of World War II.

Self-Action Leadership uniquely provides a "Metaphysical Theory of Everything" that serves as a comprehensive guide to one's own self-leadership -- a subject sorely lacking throughout our troubled nation and world, and perhaps especially among Millennials and many of their misguided professors.

The SAL Theory & Model represent the most original and robust training material to hit the market since Dr. Stephen R. Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Read what the experts are saying about Self-Action Leadership.

According to one career educator...
"Reading this book may be the most important thing you do this year. It's presence in the literature is a service to our Country."
~ David G. Anthony, Ed.D.
CEO, Raise Your Hand Texas

According to a career Air Force officer and pilot, who served as a POW in the infamous Hanoi Hilton for five excruciating years:
“In Self Action Leadership, Jordan Jensen has assembled a leadership masterpiece anchored steadfastly in true principles of philosophy and human behavior. In wonderfully written prose, Jordan reminds us of who we are and what it takes to live and lead with honor. Moreover, he challenges us to live up to the high calling of being human beings with a special mission on this Earth. To accomplish our mission, we must do two major things: grow in our sense of personal responsibility, and in turn, care for others and help them to do the same. I grappled with these two areas in a primal way during more than five years as a POW in Vietnam. Now I’m thrilled to see how Jordan has laid out SAL by using the vehicle of story to illuminate his own, unique journey of transcending adversity. In so doing, he has inspired us all to become who we are capable of becoming. Bravo!”
~ Colonel Lee Ellis (retired)  CEO of Leadership Freedom and FreedomStar Media, and author of Leading With Honor

And according to a career academic, and the Father of the self-leadership field in the Academe:
“There is no more important contributor to your own effectiveness than how you lead yourself. If you want to learn a great deal about the latest thinking on self- leadership, read this book.”
~ Charles C. Manz, Ph.D.
Nirenberg Professor of Leadership, The University of Massachussetts

There could be no better Christmas gift for the Millennials you know and care about -- as well as anyone (educator or otherwise) who is interested in helping oneself improve while assisting the Millennial generation live up to its billing and calling.

Dr. Jordan R. Jensen
As someone who is nearly part of the generation myself (I missed the cut by a year or two), and who is married to a Millennial, I care deeply about this generation, but am troubled by many of the negative trends and misguided subcultures that have arisen within this paradoxical generation.

Rather than sit idly by and watch these disturbing movements continue unabated, I resolved over a decade ago to dedicate my career to helping this -- and ALL generations -- become all they were capable of by focusing their attention inward toward their own self-management and leadership, instead of outward toward other people, entities, and past grievances (real or perceived).

The time has come for each of us to purify the inner vessel inside ourselves so that we might, in the words of Winston Churchill, "Arm [ourselves] and be ... men [and women] of valour, and be in readiness for the conflict," which is certain to come in coming months and years.

From One Simple Man to Another: My Tribute to Bill O'Reilly

FoxNews' Bill O'Reilly gets a bad rap in many sectors of American society, but the cold, calculating reality is that Mr. O'Reilly is one of the most honest, authentic, and important journalists that has ever reported, or commented on, news in the United States. And amazingly, he has done it in one of the most inauthentic eras in American history.

Like him or hate him, integrity demands that you respect him.  Unfortunately, the dishonesty, disingenuity, and disillusionment of our collective populace in 2016 is sufficiently viral to vibrantly support the slander and vitriol as long as Bill remains in the public eye, but when this media giant finally does retire (hopefully not for a very long time), fair-minded persons everywhere will respectfully pay homage to this journalist among journalists.

Bill O'Reilly's storied rise to fame is quintessentially American.  He was raised in Levittown, a classic post-World War II sprawling suburban working-class neighborhood on Long Island.  His parents were ordinary citizens bereft of fame, fortune, or name recognition, although they did pass along plenty of spirited Irish blood to their son.

Schooled by Catholic Nuns, little Billy was far from being a perfect child or student, but this "Bold, Fresh, Piece of Humanity" was always authentic.  Along the way he learned several life lessons that would be keys to his future success.

1. STAY SOBER. In Bill's book, "A Bold, Fresh, Piece of Humanity," he describes going to a party with a girl as a young man.  After arriving at the party and discovering drugs were being used there, his date replied, "Far out," to which Bill responded, "I'm out," and forthwith left the party.  All Americans would benefit from following Bill's disciplined example regarding the use of drugs and alcohol.

2. GET EDUCATED. While not always a model student, Bill endured the strict tutelage of the Nuns to eventually study abroad, successfully graduate from college, and earn two master's degrees from Boston University (broadcast journalism) and Harvard (MPA).

3. WORK HARD & PLAY BY THE RULES.  As a kid and teenager Bill was an avid athlete who played hard in all the childhood games and sports that he and his fellow Long Island urchins cherished.  Playing hard as a youth evolved into working hard as a man.  As a young kid supporting himself through college, Bill became an entrepreneur painting houses on Long Island where he worked long hours and raked in handsome amounts of cash for his lowly station in life at the time. As a journalist, he took nothing for granted.  Through grit, hard work, persistence, and a determination to pursue opportunities he was passionate about, he eventually worked his way to the highest levels of his profession -- a level he has maintained for an unprecedented 15 years and running.

The formula for success in America, while rarely easy, has never been particularly complicated.  If you stay sober, get educated, and then work hard and play by the rules, you are, with very few exceptions, guaranteed to eventually find success in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

While it is true that the American success formula has been more complicated for some individuals and groups of people throughout our spotted history than others, the United States remains the greatest provider of collective opportunity in the world -- especially if you are willing to focus on individual effort and personal potential rather than collective grievances.  And no one is more courageous in calling out those who promote the latter over the former than Mr. O'Reilly.

There are many reasons I admire and respect Bill O'Reilly.  I suppose my admiration stems in part from the fact that I see some of myself in Bill.  After all, I am a middle-class kid from rural Utah who loves history, is passionate about education, and had to work my butt off to earn everything I've achieved both personally and professionally.

But there are other, more important, reasons I venerate this titan of television news commentary. First, I admire Bill's authenticity; second, I respect his integrity; and third, I revere his generosity and compassion towards those in need.

First, a word about Bill's authenticity.  In employing the term, "authenticity," I am not referring to mere uniqueness or originality, but to the integrity one exercises towards oneself as well as to one's principles.  Thank you, Bill, for being a classic authenticist.  I believe an AGE of AUTHENTICISM is is the early stages of eclipsing the morally perilous postmodern era that has so dramatically wounded the ethical vibrance of our nation, and you, Mr. O'Reilly, have been a leading voice -- if not the leading voice -- in this movement.  My work is yet unknown, but when I am your age and the Age of Authenticism is credited with changing the course of American History, your name will appear among a short list of powerful authenticists that made this welcomed shift possible.

Second, a word about Bill's integrity.  Anyone who watches the O'Reilly Factor consistently will know that Bill stands as ready to critique and, when necessary, criticize a Republican as he is a Democrat.  He is just as willing to lecture President Bush or Speaker Boehner as he is President Obama or Senator Reid.  My company, Freedom Focused, champions an aristotelian Golden Mean as one means of accessing the truth about a given matter.  Thank you, Bill, for being the Golden Mean of the American media, and for giving such a powerful voice to Independent Americans.

Third, a word about Bill's compassion and generosity. While Bill is known for an impassioned and spirited vocality, and what some consider to be an intimidating and bellicose demeanor and presentation, none of this can mask the remarkable compassion Bill feels towards those in need.  And he puts his money where his mouth -- and heart -- is by regularly extending portions of his considerable fortune to a variety of worthy philanthropic causes.  He is especially conscious of supporting our Troops, whereby he shares his prodigious platform and microphone with others who are also eager to help.  And I know Bill's giving does not end on the air.  I often wonder how much money Mr. O'Reilly gives away without ever telling his audience about it -- and he tells his audience about it on a regular basis.  A genuine Christian man, I doubt anyone will ever know the full extent of Bill's generous giving.

As an A-list journalist, he is perhaps unmatched in his courage and willingness to criticize pop cultural icons, politicians, and others who proliferate media content and support policies that are harmful to children and others--even when he knows doing so will be unpopular, and that his comments will be crucified online and elsewhere.  Adore him or despise him, in this age of moral opacity and entropy, everyone always knows where Bill O'Reilly stands--something you can't say about many high profile journalists and leaders in this country.  Thank God someone in the USA with enormous power is willing to consistently stand on the side of modesty, propriety, and integrity.

In a world dominated by political correctness and ideological loyalty (often at the expense of honesty and decency), Bill O'Reilly -- ever worthy of his famous moniker: A Bold, Fresh, Piece of Humanity -- remains ever true to his principles.  You may not like his principles, but how can you not admire someone as successful, rich, and well traveled as Bill, who, after all these years, remains true to the same code of ethics and principles he was brought up with in Levittown.  Perhaps ironically, it is this integrity to principle that has led to his unprecedented success.  A successful project, job, or year can be lucked or timed into.  But a successful career at the very top of one's industry that leaves a positive, lasting legacy attached thereto must always be earned the old-fashioned way, and YOU, Bill O'Reilly, have earned it.

Thank you, Mr. Bill, for your fine example of what it means to be successful in America and still live with integrity.  Thank you for your courage to speak the truth, especially when it is unpopular to do so.  And most of all, THANK YOU for the profound influence you have had on my life and career.  I hope for the opportunity to someday meet you.

As a way of expressing my gratitude, I referenced you via one of your self-appointed titles in the opening line of a recent public address I gave on EDUCATION at Lone Star College of the Woodlands (North Houston, Texas).  Click HERE to view Dr. Jensen reference Bill O'Reilly in the opening line of his groundbreaking speech on Education.

SAL Seminar Section 2: "A Self-Help Theory of Everything"

SAL Book: Self-Action Leadership Theory (Part 2)

Review an explanation of the Self-Action Leadership Theory and its metaphorical analogy to space travel, click HERE.

LEVEL 1: THE EDUCATION STAGE

The Education stage corresponds to the Earth’s surface in the analogy. This is where you begin your journey to Self-Transcendence.

You cannot do what you do not know. You must, therefore, learn knowledge before you can apply it. The Education stage is where you first learn about SAL. Here, you are introduced to the first major principle of SAL: that certain thoughts, speech, and actions lead to higher levels of Existential Growth and others lead to lower levels and failure. This stage is where you first experience that great personal leadership epiphany that you don’t have to be a victim of your circumstances—you are not a helpless entity subjected entirely to whimsical external realities.

Far from being a one-time exercise, this stage continues throughout all other stages. It is an ongoing process of learning lessons that are necessary to reach higher levels of Existential Growth. In this sense, it can be compared to Mission Control in Houston – the traditional command center of space missions. Mission control and their colleagues train (educate) the astronauts (self-action leaders) before they begin their journey into Outer Space (Self-Transcendence). After leaving the Earth’s surface, the astronauts continue to communicate with Mission Control in a process of ongoing education about new obstacles and opportunities that will greet them on their journey.

LEVEL 2: THE BEGINNER'S STAGE

The Beginner’s Stage is likened to the troposphere. It is here that Existential Gravity exerts its greatest negative influence on your efforts, often making it a very unstable level. Like the arbitrary behavior of the weather in the troposphere, the this stage is filled with metaphorical hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning and thunder, rainstorms, snowstorms, hailstorms, fog, and wind. These metaphorical weather events manifest themselves in a variety of internal and external problems and difficulties. External variables might include poverty, poor parenting, illnesses and limitations, abuse, neglect, bad luck, difficult peer and residential environments, interpersonal pressure to make poor choices, the poor or evil choices of others, lack of educational opportunities, etc. Internal variables might include a bad attitude, a pessimistic outlook, a victim’s mentality, dishonesty, unkindness, maliciousness, low levels of emotional intelligence, narcissism, jealousy, insecurity, vindictiveness, etc.

Existential Gravity exerts its greatest impact in the Beginner’s Stage. It is in this stage that you are introduced to Existential Crabs or the “Crab Effect.” The “Crab Effect” refers to a phenomenon that can be observed among live crabs placed together in a bucket. If one crab is placed in a bucket, it can escape, but if multiple crabs are in the bucket together, none of them will escape because their fellow crabs will continually circumvent any attempts by its fellows to gain their freedom. Jealous of the progress of their fellows, crabs will not let one another succeed, but will just keep pulling each other down to shared mediocrity.

EXISTENTIAL CRABS

People and organizations that act to undermine and limit your Existential Growth.

Human beings, especially in the Beginner’s Stage, have intense crab-like tendencies and often seek to prop themselves up by pulling others down. As the age-old cliché goes: “misery loves company.” The “Crab Effect: explains, in part, why elementary, middle, and high school can prove more socially difficult than adulthood, since most children and teenagers reside at lower levels of Existential Growth.

The pull of social mores and negative peer pressure combined with a person’s initial lack of Existential Growth can prove overwhelming one this level. In fact, if a person does not have external advocates to support and guide them through this vital stage, they will likely never rise above it. Just as we will not succeed if we do nothing, we likewise will not succeed without the help of others.

No matter how naturally gifted a person may be, failure is common at this stage. One may work very hard and suffer quite intensely with relatively little to show for their efforts and pains. As a result, many feel overwhelmed. Without vision and faith in possibilities lying beyond extraordinary adversity, many choose to quit trying, or, in more severe cases, even end their life.

It is easy to become discouraged at this juncture, and self-doubt is commonplace. Self-esteem and worth are typically very low, even though it may be masked with an outward display of swagger, bravado, and pseudo self-confidence. Aside from any external limitations you may face in this stage, a person’s internal limitations are also at their peak. These limitations are borne of insecurity, diffidence, and a tenuous track record of success.

SAL beginners are apt to blame most – if not all – of their problems on other people, events, and circumstances. But it is also where they have the opportunity to begin exercising their faith in SAL principles of personal responsibility.

For some, this stage will be the most difficult to transcend. For others, it will be relatively easy. The difference will be determined by a person’s unique formula of SAL limitations and benefits. For example, those born with natural inclinations toward mental hygiene and a supportive family with a mom, dad, and sufficient resources will likely progress through this part more easily. Someone born with neurosis or psychosis, or to a fractured family (or none at all) with a tenuous (or non-existent) support system and few resources will likely have a very difficult time transcending this stage. But all self-action leaders should remember that no matter what their challenges and limitations are, it is possible to make it past this stage. Difficulty does not spell impossibility.

FINANCIAL STANDING AS A METRIC FOR MEASURING EXISTENTIAL GROWTH

In general, financial status is an imperfect metric by which to judge Existential Growth. I have met or known of very wealthy people who frequent lower levels, or who entered higher levels, only to digress to lower levels after becoming victims of their own avarice. On the other hand, I have met or known persons who have risen to the highest levels without ever becoming monetarily rich.

But despite these inconsistencies, financial solvency and success are meaningful benchmarks to measure Existential Growth against. This is only true, however, when wealth is earned in an honest manner through diligent industry that benefits others. Wealth that was inherited or gambled into has little, if any, effect on Existential Growth. While many exceptions exist, the Beginner’s Stage is typically marked by financial dependence on one’s parents or initial caregivers. If you are on your own, you are likely struggling to make ends meet, as I was at that point in my life. Some will even be homeless.

LEVEL 3: THE PRACTITIONER'S STAGE

The Practitioner’s Stage is likened to the stratosphere, where most jet travel takes place. Transcending Existential Gravity sufficiently to arrive at the Practitioner’s Stage is not easy, but when you do, a newfound freedom awaits you. This freedom is evinced more by internal power than external rewards or altered circumstances, although both may accompany your advancement. Existential Crabs still exist in this and other stages, but their numbers and toxicity diminish with each succeeding stage. Unfortunately, this means their techniques for dragging you down will be more clandestine and clever.

Nevertheless, as you grow more confident in yourself and your life’s direction, your capacity to disregard the unimportant and invalid criticism of others expands. Arriving at the Practitioner’s Stage is a significant achievement from the simple fact that many people never fully break free of the Beginner’s Stage.

The Practitioner’s Stage is a relatively calm period compared to the Beginner’s Stage. Externally speaking, you may have transcended a lot of the toxic relationships and/or troubling circumstances that marked the time you spent in the Beginner’s Stage. Internally speaking, you no longer see yourself primarily as a victim of circumstance or the actions of others. It’s easier to recognize the power you possess to determine your own destiny. This knowledge may motivate you to exercise that freedom and power to contribute to the lives of others while furthering your own education. Financially, you have likely acquired the means to provide basic life essentials for yourself, or are at least proactively progressing toward supporting yourself financially.

This level is called the Practitioner’s Stage because you have sufficiently developed your SAL knowledge and skills to the point where you can competently practice them on a consistent basis. Moreover, you have developed the inner strength, security, and resiliency to continue your rise in Existential Growth even if those who helped you in the Beginner’s Stage are no longer with you. This stage marks the beginning of the transition between dependence and independence.[1] For some, it is a magnificent stage where they can really begin to stretch their wings in conjunction with learning more about SAL. For others, it may be a disillusioning stage with two options: digress back to the Beginner’s Stage, or move forward in faith toward a greater, but unknown, future.

Breaking free of this first stage is a significant achievement that should be accompanied by a sense of satisfaction and achievement. Accompanying this celebration will be an eagerness to keep on progressing towards the Refining Stage. Do not confuse this achievement as a pseudo-arrival; that will lead to a cessation of effort and a plateau to your progress. This stage is often accompanied by a tangible life achievement such as graduation, getting your first “real” job, or getting married. Be cautious of viewing this stage and its accompanying achievements as a destination rather than a milestone lest you end up living the rest of your life in the Practitioner’s Stage. Such stagnation precludes countless possibilities of future achievement and greatness.

A filtering process occurs in the Practitioner’s Stage to separate proactive self-action leaders from those who settle for paths of lesser resistance. The former will work harder than ever to rise to the next level; the latter will begin to settle for a status quo of relative mediocrity.

This plateau represents an existential comfort zone wherein the reactive decide that life is good enough, and that whatever freedom or additional benefits exist beyond this point are not worth the extra effort and sacrifice required to obtain them. It is the place where avoiding pain to maintain comfort trumps sacrificing temporary pleasure for greater growth down the road. After all the hard work invested just to get to the Practitioner’s Stage, many may find themselves feeling content to coast along the highways and byways of SAL stasis. They work hard enough to maintain a basic set of habits that enable them to avoid slipping back to the undesirable external circumstances of the Beginner’s Stage, but they fail to embrace any opportunities that will produce greater internal growth and external opportunities available in higher stages. They are content to merely maintain an existential state of above-average mediocrity.

In the Practitioner’s Stage, proactive self-action leaders become increasingly internally motivated. On this level, your desire further development transcends merely eating and paying your bills. It extends to seeking self-improvement and personal fulfillment. It also manifest itself in a desire to help others and influence them for good. The forward-thinking person wants something more. This desire inspires you to work your way up into the Refining Stage, where the authenticity and strength of your desire will be tested like never before.

LEVEL 4: THE REFINING STAGE

Your initial entrance into the Refining Stage may occur against a backdrop of some significant personal achievement, success, or milestone. For example, you may have finally graduated from college or trades training, received a graduate degree, earned a significant promotion in your company, or started up a new business. As a result, your graduation from the Practitioner’s Stage may be marked by pomp & circumstance, excitement, celebration, personal satisfaction, and the adulation of others. This personal triumph serves as a cleverly camouflaged “calm before the storm,” and can be very deceiving. This mirage of your “ship coming in,” however, never lasts indefinitely, as the fiery heat of the Refining Stage begins to blast away at you in the form of all kinds of unexpected adversity.

Many enter this part of their journey with high hopes that their troubles are now behind them—only to discover that in reality, their greatest challenges lie ahead. This realization may lead to profound disillusionment, which is common, justified, and understandable. It is not, however, cause to give up and fall behind. Remember, a refiner’s fire serves to strengthen and purify, and this necessitates a certain amount of discomfort to gain more Existential Growth.

Examples of trials you may encounter in the Refining Stage include:

  • The death of a loved one
  • A job layoff
  • A personal disappointment or rejection
  • A major career set-back
  • Severe physical illness or injury
  • Experiencing a nervous breakdown, depression, anxiety, or other mental disorder
  • A crisis of self-confidence or security
  • Battling through a spiritual or mid-life crisis
  • Feeling trapped in the “existential vacuum”[2]

The Refining Stage is likened to the mesosphere in Earth’s atmosphere. Just as the coldest temperatures in the atmosphere are found in the mesosphere, the Refining Stage offers the greatest challenges of your existential journey. As difficult as the challenges in the Beginner’s Stage may have seemed, the challenges of the Refining Stage are often far more painful and difficult to transcend. Unlike the trials of the Beginner’s Stage, which can be solved despite a very low level of existential development, the challenges of the Refining Stage occur after you have already experienced significant growth. By this time, you are relatively mature, experienced, and capable. Such challenges can therefore come as a great shock to your system, a “system” you once believed was indestructible and omnipotent. This is a time of rude awakenings, failure, and set-backs, but not of surrender.

This stage was by far the hardest I’ve ever gone through, and it will likely be the hardest you’ll ever go through as well. Self-action leaders go through the Refining Stage at different periods of life. Some may be refined relatively early in life; others may experience their refining in middle age; and others still may be much older when they eventually face their personal refining process. I was blessed (or cursed, depending how you look at it) to face intense refining periods in my own life in my teenage, adolescent, and young adult years. Though these periods will always carry echoes of pain and heartache, my progression has made my suffering entirely worth it. And while I would never want to pass through such a hellish period again, I wouldn’t trade anything in the universe for what I have become through the process. As someone who has passed through this fiery phase of life, I therefore urge you will all of my heart and soul to hold on to the idea that this will all be for your benefit later.

The challenges of the Refining Stage are designed to polish and humble you. Such lessons in humility are often excruciating. Intellectually speaking, any sane person would gladly accept this process because it is the only way to advance to the next level. Realistically, however, the challenges of the Refining Stage break many otherwise highly intelligent and capable men and women. This “breaking” occurs when people choose to cling to ego and selfish pride, even when doing things “their way” is damming up their progression. Consequently, they refuse to accept any information, even when it is true, if it conflicts with their worldview.

Sadly, such individuals will sometimes go to great lengths – up to and including dedicating their lives – to coming up with all kinds of clever arguments for why their way (the Wrong way) is in fact the Right way. And the more ardent and energetic they are in their quest, the more convinced (self-deceived) they become that Wrong is Right and vice versa. They become like delusional demi-gods determined to poison the minds and hearts of anyone willing to listen to the pseudo truths of their cherished ideologies. The result? They voluntarily give up their opportunities for further Existential Growth and progress. They build their own glass ceiling, and refuse to ever break through it. For these people, the Refining Stage has an impenetrable ceiling attached to it. This ceiling is not impregnable because it cannot be breached, but because they choose not to breach it. They would rather hold on to their way and remain forever in the Refining Stage, or, as is more often the case, digress to lower levels previously attained.

If you had a relatively easy experience transcending the Beginner’s and Practitioner’s Stages, the trials of the Refining Stage may catch you completely off guard and prove even more difficult and painful because you have not yet faced serious adversity in your life. For example, if you’ve had a healthy and privileged upbringing with access to many resources and opportunities, you may have met with a lot of initial success and very little failure in the first three stages. Perhaps you were also sheltered from many painful and precarious situations inherent in a less privileged upbringing. While there’s no shame in this natural naïveté, it might mean that you may be less prepared for the emotional realities of the severe adversity you will most certainly meet in the Refining Stage. Ironically, this naïveté is often fueled by highly involved and well meaning – but ultimately unwise – parents, teachers, coaches, etc.

If, on the other hand, you had a very difficult time transcending the Beginner’s and Practitioner’s Stages, you may be better equipped for this stage because you’ve developed certain survivor’s instincts through a familiarity with adversity. In the process, you have developed tenacity, resourcefulness, courage, and self-reliance.

The Refining Stage is “no respecter of persons.” It does not care whether you are rich or poor, gifted and privileged—or not. Everyone who rises to the level of refining will eventually get one’s chance to be refined. It is not fun, and can be terribly painful, but the results are beautiful beyond description. Victor Frankl once wrote about the ironic existential egalitarianism as it relates to adversity in the Refining Stage when he wrote that, “the ‘size’ of human suffering is absolutely relative.”[3]

The Refining Stage has the power to incinerate the roots of personal weakness that inhibit your Existential Growth. It also has the capacity to sever relational ties with Existential Crabs that have been holding you back in lower levels. The co-dependency of your past grows into the independence of your present and the interdependence of your future.[4]

To transcend the Refining Stage, you must demonstrate high levels of physical, mental, emotional, social, and financial self-reliance. The Refining Stage provides you with an opportunity to prove to yourself, other people, and life itself, that you are capable of facing extreme difficulty, challenge, or even tragedy, and successfully come out the other side confident, courageous, and standing on your own two feet.

“Life is a grindstone, and whether it grinds you down or polishes you up is for you and you alone to decide.”
– Cavett Robert (1907-1997)

The Refining Stage will test you to your very core. Its purpose is to see you are really made of, or, looked at another way, to see what it can make of you. Just as gold, platinum, diamonds, high-grade steel, and other precious stones and valuable metals cannot be refined without the fiery heat of blue hot flames, you cannot be refined without the scorching heat of personal adversity.

The Refining Stage is an existential sieve that separates the strong and humble from the prideful and weak. It is an opportunity for you to prove to yourself that you can “partake of life’s bitter cups … without becoming bitter.”[5]

Not much is known about the Mesosphere because it is too high for hot air balloons or airplanes, yet too low for orbiting satellites or space stations. Similarly, the Refining Stage produces a series of trials and challenges that are uniquely tailored to YOU—the individual. As such, no other human being can tell you precisely how to best navigate the journey and cope with the pain. In this sense, it is a journey you must ultimately make on your own, making the Refining Stage is a profoundly lonely phase of your existential development. This is not to say others cannot help you along the way. It merely means that no one else can make the journey for you. In her poem, Solitude, the poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox eloquently articulates the loneliness of this stage:

Laugh, and the world laughs with you ;
Weep, and you weep alone,
For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth,
But has trouble enough of its own.
Sing, and the hills will answer ;
Sigh, it is lost on the air,
The echoes bound to a joyful sound,
But shrink from voicing care.

Rejoice, and men will seek you ;
Grieve, and they turn and go.
They want full measure of all your pleasure,
But they do not need your woe.

Be glad, and your friends are many ;
Be sad, and you lose them all,—
There are none to decline your nectar’d wine,
But alone you must drink life’s gall.

Feast, and your halls are crowded
Fast, and the world goes by.
Succeed and give, and it helps you life,
But no man can help you die.
There is room in the halls of pleasure
For a large and lordly train,
But one by one we must all file on
Through the narrow aisles of pain.[6]

Not everyone will experience the Refining Stage as one, long, extended trial as I did with OCD, depression, despised love, and professional failure. More often, people go through many cycles of the Refining Stage with a variety of deep and difficult challenges at different junctures in their lives. In my case, a chronic mental illness—and all its concomitant problems—dominated my life for over 20 years. In someone else’s case, several acute episodes may be spread out over many years. Realistically, everyone (myself included) will experience several periods of refinement throughout one’s life. The regularity, intensity, and longevity of each subsequent period will differ vastly from person-to-person. But no matter what comes your way, if you work hard, remain determined, and patiently endure the crucibles faced in the Refining Stage, you will come out on the other side refined, newly strengthened, and ready for the next level—the Polishing Stage.

In my next blog post, I will introduce Levels 5-9 of the SAL Theory.

PART 12: Restoring American Patriotism & Greatness

The call and goal of Self-Action Leadership is self-renewal which inevitably leads to organizational, national and then international renewal.

I am under no illusions about the difficulty of the task. Transformations of entire cultures do not happen overnight. It took many decades for postmodernism to become firmly entrenched in the academy and pollute our culture to the point it has today. Likewise, it will take many decades for the Age of Authenticism to fully blossom in the hearts of ourselves, our families, classrooms, universities, governing bodies, Nation, and the world-at-large.

The best way we can make the world a better place is to make America a better place, and we begin making America a better place by loving, serving, and rooting for our own country. Once again, in the sage words of President Teddy Roosevelt:

“A [person] must be a good patriot before he can be … a good citizen of the world. Experience teaches us that the average man who protests that his international feeling swamps his national feeling, that he does not care for his country because he cares so much for mankind, in actual practice proves himself the foe of mankind…
"Now, this does not mean in the least that a man should not wish to do good outside his native land. On the contrary, just as I think that the man who loves his family is more apt to be a good neighbor than the man who does not, so I think that the most useful member of the family of nations is normally a strongly patriotic nation.”[2]
Let us not fear, my fellow Americans to shower upon our homeland all the authentic love and patriotism she deserves, and let us not aspire toward the mean or mediocre out of a concern for offending other nations.

Indeed, other nations are great in large measure because the United States was first great, and many nations are presently floundering in part because the United States is currently floundering.

May we take great pride in the unapologetic exceptionalism of our August Nation, and may we choose to be self-action leaders who improve ourselves that we may lay hold more authentically on this singular claim and thereby enjoy the countless blessings derived of excellence.

Many years ago, I chose to dedicate my life and career to the Cause of Freedom. Fortunately, I am still a young man with the greater portion of my life and career still before me. But I cannot accomplish it alone.

Indeed, I, of myself, can do but little, but together, we can do much. I call upon everyone within the sound of my voice—literally or virtually—to rise up and reclaim the right of self-sovereignty our Creator and Founding Fathers endowed upon us as Americans.

Then, as each of us improves individually, one-by-one, organization-by-organization, governing body-by-governing body, may we each rise further to help our fellows do the same, in a united effort to restore American Greatness and Strength. I do not say this in any attitude of existential superiority; Americans are no better than anyone else inherently. I say this out of historical fact—and in my present hope for a better future for everyone in the world.

Along the way, may we strive to be a little more tolerant of and loving towards our neighbors and fellow citizens—regardless how they choose to vote or live their lives. May we, in the inspiring words of Stephen R. Covey, choose to be a light, not a judge.

And the next time you see the Stars & Stripes flutter majestically in the wind at your local school, church, or car dealership, I invite you to place your hand over your heart, bow your head, and allow the sensations of gratitude for all this Country has provided you to drown out whatever erstwhile angst may have simmered over past grievances. I assure you that your day will go a little better, and your heart will be a little lighter, if you do so.

No matter who you are, and regardless what your race, culture, political persuasion, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, etc., may be, I invite you to cultivate the desire to learn, the will to work, and the integrity to adhere to conscience—in short, to unite in an embrace of the true and virtuous principles of self-reliance, self-respect, and self-government upon which our Nation was founded, and upon which it became the greatest Nation on Earth. Such unity is our only real hope for collective success & prosperity.

May God Bless the United States of America by blessing each of us in our individual pursuits of self-renewal that we may yet honorably fulfill the sacred responsibility we all have of lifting and leading the rest of the world into the welcomed arms of safety, security, liberty, freedom, & peace.

PART 9: The Golden Mean

One worldview that harmonizes particularly well with SAL is Aristotelian philosophy, and more specifically, Aristotle’s concept of the Golden Mean. This concept holds that virtue, or the good, is to be found in a balance between extremes.
Aristotle’s famous philosophy posits that right thinking and doing cannot occur in the presence of either deficiency or excess. The implication, of course, is that virtually all extremes can be labeled, in the very least, as incorrect, and at the very most, as downright evil.

As President Theodore Roosevelt once put it, “We can just as little afford to follow the doctrinaires of an extreme individualism as the doctrinaires of an extreme socialism.” [1] Therefore, according to Aristotle and Roosevelt, the happy medium between or among extremes is where truth is most likely to be located.

While it is a great truth that there are usually exceptions to the rule—meaning that isolated scenarios and unusual circumstances may require extreme action for limited periods of time (as the saying goes, desperate times call for desperate measures)—in the great balance of things, truth is almost always found, well, in a balance of things!

PART 10: The Triadic Golden Mean of SAL

Truth, as defined by Self-Action Leadership, or SAL Philosophy, lies inside of a perfectly balanced triad consisting of three fundamental elements: Conscience, Common sense, and Rationality.

In other words, we must be willing to consult our brains, our experiences, and that of others (since that is where common sense wisdom comes from), and our own, authentic spiritual-visceral sense of what is right and what is wrong.

The imbalance or neglect of any of these three, vital variables of the formula, will result in the wrong answers. Let me now address these three variables one at a time.

First, rationality. As human beings, we have been endowed with rational faculties that empower us to reason using sound logic and reliable scientific experimentation.

However, as all highly functioning rational beings know all too well, Mankind—despite its remarkable developments in science, medicine, and technology—still falls dismally short of anything that could be rightly called a perfect understanding of all things, and perhaps especially with regards to science.

For example, talk to any world renowned astronomer, and he or she will tell you there is a lot more we don’t know about the Universe than what we do know.

As such, and with a renewed effort to pursue scientific understanding to the fullest extent possible, let us honestly recognize and humbly accede the reality that we must yet make many decisions in life, both individually and collectively, that science alone cannot adequately address.

Thus, even the most rational of beings, must rationally turn to other avenues of wisdom when science alone fails to fully deliver. These avenues are: common sense (or experience), and conscience.

Let us first address the subject of common sense, which is rooted mainly in experience—both our own and that of others. In a world where common sense has become increasingly uncommon, where can we go to extract wisdom about this ironically elusive topic? The answer is: in the pages of history.

Despite the scientific verity that our Planet has existed in one state or another for some 4.5 billion years, we must, nonetheless, rely on a historical narrative and written record that is limited to only several thousand years.

Despite this relatively short period of recorded history, we have been blessed with a fairly comprehensive canon of historical data on common sense. If we will study and learn from this record as an honest seeker of truth, we will be greatly empowered to live successfully in the present and build a better future for our children and their children.

As a starting point, may I suggest four (4) basic texts that will work wonders in restoring common sense and greatness to America.

  1. The Making of America: The Substance and Meaning of the Constitution by W. Cleon Skousen
  2. Citizenship in a Republic: by President Theodore Roosevelt. Speech delivered at the Sorbonne, Paris France, April 23, 1910.
  3. A Message to Garcia: by Elbert Hubbard
  4. The Lessons of History, by Will and Ariel Durant

PART 11: Conscience

Many difficulties and dilemmas we face as human beings can be effectively understood and addressed by rationality and common sense alone—but not all. In those moments of life when we are faced with challenges for which there lies neither scientific proof nor historical precedent, wherein can we turn?

The answer is Conscience—the light within.

One of our Nation’s sagest thinkers of yesteryear—Ralph Waldo Emerson—who built his career on a platform of scholarly skepticism of religious dogma, managed to still recognize the reality that something of significance resided within our minds, hearts, and spirits that transcended rationality. Perhaps this is why Emerson talked of “The Divine Knowledge,” and “The Over-Soul,” and suggested that “We are natural believers,” and that “nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.”

No one can exercise true integrity without continually consulting his or her conscience—especially in matters where rationality and common sense alone are insufficient. Conscience can be dulled by ignoring its whisperings and acting contrary to its visceral commands. This is how our country has dulled its collective conscience.

The only way to regain this collective conscience is for individuals to take a leadership role in reclaiming moral influence in the face of moral entropy.

It is up to YOU, and it is up to ME, to choose to listen to and follow our consciences in a good-faith effort to follow the counsel of Gandhi—to be the change we wish to see in our nation and in the world.
