Jerusalem and the USA's Presidential Candidates

 Nadene Goldfoot
Bernie and Hillary, the only 2 presidential candidates of the Democrat Party,
Hillary, first to speak at AIPAC Meeting; Sanders, only Jewish candidate, who just vilifies Israel, naturally had scheduled a speaking engagement elsewhere out in the West and didn't attend.  I saw and heard him  speak about Israel on TV and was so angry that I had to throw my rolled up anklets at the TV screen.  I couldn't take his tearing down Israel and changed the channel.  He just repeated Palestinian rhetoric.

Peter Roff reminded us after the AIPAC meeting where Hillary Clinton was the first to speak, " that she has been our nation's lead diplomat under what has been characterized as the most anti-Israel administration ever to occupy the White House, and she has a lot to answer for.  Her record shows she has not been a friend of Israel.  She has been an integral part of 2 administrations, telling us of this constantly as a reason for being president.    The administration tried to force Israel into a dangerous land-for-peace deal.  This is where political operatives close to the president engineered the election of Labor Party's Ehud Barak as prime minister. They helped to open an office and promoted him against Netanyahu.  Then, the administration has made a devil's bargain with Iran that jeopardizes Israeli security."   Peter Roff is a U.S. News & World Report contributing editor and longtime observer of the Washington scene who wrote about this.  .
Menorah in front of Knesset in Jerusalem

One thing she is not in agreement with Trump or Cruz is that she would NOT move the American embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.  She thinks this would stir up the Palestinian Arabs and cause them to become violent.  Trump and Cruz are ready to do this much desired act by Israelis as soon as they become presidents, Cruz on the very first day of taking office.

Jerusalem, where 3 religions come together; Jewish, Christian, Muslim.
Under Israeli law, all are safe.

A miracle happened in 1967.  Egypt and  Arab states (Jordan, Iraq, Syria) with Soviet Union spreading false rumors instigating them,  and all their soldiers and war machines attacked Israel on June 5, 1967 and after 6 days, had lost the war.  By losing, Israel came into land they had lost to Jordan in the beginning of 1948 that was to be part of Israel in the deal with the British who held the mandate.  Britain had double-dealt to both parties.
"The capital of Israel is Jerusalem. That is where the seat of government resides, where the country's parliament stands and legislates and where the President, Prime Minister and Cabinet have their offices and meet."

Tower of David in Jerusalem-principal tower of the Jerusalem citadel, south of the Jaffa Gate.  It's base holds the foundation of the Phasael tower, erected by King Herod who was made king of Judea  by the Roman Senate (73 BCE to 4 BCE)  in memory of his brother.   Herod's towers were left standing after the siege of Titus, Roman emperor from 79-81 CE and served to protect the Roman camp in Jerusalem.  The identification with David's Tower dates back to the Byzantine Period.  Excavations were commenced there in 1969.   Herod had rebuilt the Temple in Jerusalem.
In fact, Jerusalem has long been called The City of David. King David back 1010 BCE to 970 BCE had built this city and it was the capital of Israel and then was the capital of Judea  (southern Israel) until the Romans burned the city and Temple down in 70 CE.  It has more than political standing.  It is a religious icon and holy site to the Jewish people.

In 2008, when candidate Barack Obama declared,  "Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided."  Within 24 hours, he started backtracking."  This is how politicians make speeches to people when they want votes from them.  They lie a lot.
"Later, his Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, tried to adhere to the official line, but she kept slipping. Visiting Jerusalem she talked about being "Here, in Israel." (Oops.) Even National Security Adviser Susan Rice slipped, tweeting "Great to be back in Israel." (Oops again)." Both Trump and Cruz feel this move to Jerusalem would show American strength of our conviction and are prepared to show Hamas terrorists that they are standing with their friends who don't go around committing acts of terrorism but are the only democratic good friend from the Middle East, and that they stand by their proven friends.

USA Embassy in Tel Aviv

1967's war of all the surrounding Arab states against Israel was 49 years ago.  It will be 50 years ago when we have a new American president.  It's time that the USA recognize Israel's capital as Jerusalem.
Jews praying at Western Wall (Wailing Wall)
Not only have Jews continued to live in Jerusalem for the past 3,000 years, but they have constituted the largest single group of people there since the 1840's.  In Jerusalem we find the Western Wall of the Temple, where Jewish people go to pray, as it is the holiest site in Judaism, though the entire city is sacred.
Mosque of Omar (Dome of the Rock) sits in the center of the ancient Solomon's Temple area (al-Harim ash-Sherif), built by Caliph Abd al-Malik in about 738 to replace the temporary structure set up by Caliph Omar 100 years before.  It is situated on the traditional site of Mt. Moriah.
Policed by Jordan, they do not allow Jews here.  Jews found on this site are 2nd class citizens in their own capital and are in trouble.
Jerusalem has NEVER served as a provincial capital under Muslim rule.  It has NEVER been a Muslim cultural center.  The only holy site to Muslims in Jerusalem is the majestic Dome of the Rock.  To Muslims, there is a great difference between Jerusalem and Mecca or Medina.  Jerusalem has no major significance to Muslims other than the fact that it is holy to the Jews who won when all the Arabs ganged up on Israel in 1967 and attacked but lost anyway!
Year 1844 7,120 Jews...5,000 Muslims...3,390 Christians
Year 1948  100,000 Jews.... 40,000 Muslims.....25,000 Christians
Year 1990  378,200 Jews....131,800 Muslims....14,400 Christians
Year 2011(end of year)   804,400 Jews...293,000 Arabs (96% Muslims)
Jerusalem now has the density of 1,484 per km2.
Jerusalem's 2011 Jewish population was  8% of Israel's population.  Jerusalem's Arab population made up 18% of the total Arab population of Israel.

UN Secretary Lacks Moral Compass: Gives Green Light to Terrorism

Nadene Goldfoot
Ban Ki-moon The Secretary-General was born in the Republic of Korea on 13 June 1944. He received a bachelor's degree in international relations from Seoul National University in 1970.  In 1985, he earned a master's degree in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Eli E. Hertz

How can Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, possibly say that terrorism and incitement is human nature and we see it in reaction to occupation!

This statement is what Eli E. Hertz has now found to be Moon's philosophy. Mr. Hertz "is the president of Myths and Facts, an organization devoted to research and publication of information regarding US interests in the world and particularly in the Middle East. Mr. Hertz served as Chairman of the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting."  Evidently Moon cannot stand up to pressure from those countries against Israel's existence.  One needs to have a strong moral compass to combat these countries' ideas of what morality is.  They do not share mine.   Terrorism is not human nature in all people, especially if you have been brought up under Jewish and Christian values.

The UN charter does not go along with this brain-washed idea of his.  It states in the Resolution 1377 of the UN Security Council that it "reaffirms its unequivocal condemnation of all acts, methods and practices of terrorism as criminal and unjustifiable, REGARDLESS OF THEIR MOTIVATION, in all their forms and manifestations, wherever and by whomever committed.

Thomas L. Friedman, author of "From Beirut to Jerusalem" and many others
Even Thomas L. Friedman, a Leftist Democratic thinker if ever there was one, stated back in 2002 in the April 1st New York Times, that "Palestinians are not desperate from Israeli occupation.  Other people in the world are desperate, but they don't go around with dynamite strapped to their body.  PALESTINIANS HAVE ADOPTED SUICIDE BOMBING AS A STRATEGIC CHOICE, NOT OUT OF DESPERATION.   "Thomas Loren Friedman is an American journalist, columnist and author. He has won the Pulitzer Prize three times and currently writes a weekly column for The New York Times."  "Professor Noam Chomsky  accused Friedman of endorsing and encouraging terrorism by Israeli forces.   That shows how off-beat Chomsky is, to say that of a critic of Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu  in many areas.  At least Friedman understands the position Israel finds itself in to exist.  Israel does not practice terrorism.

Israel's administrated areas in 1980 were not typical occupied areas.  Until a peace settlement comes about with the Arabs who call themselves "Palestinians", as they used to be known as Syrian Arabs,  which will determine the political future of the areas, Israel's policy tries to achieve 4 objectives:
1. keep conditions of security for Israelis and Arabs alike.
2. All shall live normal lives without losing contact with Arabs in other countries.
3. Bring about, make possible rapid economic development
4. Encourage co-existence and cooperation between Arabs and Israelis.

This was policy and it was deterred by the Arabs themselves, as they always manage to do so with their leadership.  They have had 2 intefadas, sort of like extreme terrorism/war. Their doctrine is not to accept Israel but to destroy it.  Netanyahu and the government had been for a 2 state solution but the Arabs are not.  Right now with such terroristic acts going on from the Arabs, one cannot justify thinking about a 2 state solution.  It is not logical.  The Arabs are not meeting the goals set to create and accept a new state.  It would be like allowing IS to move in, and that is most likely what would happen.  They are already moving on Gaza.

Look, it took Jews 2,000 years to finally get it together to create Israel again after being forced out by the Romans who had been occupying their nation  and having Jerusalem burned down along with the 2nd Temple in 70 CE.  Finally, May 14, 1948 it came about legally and was accepted into the family of nations by the UN.  Is the UN now trying to end this nation of almost 68 years of age because the Muslim Arabs can't abide the one and only Jewish state here again when they were not even viable states in the past?  Most of the nay-saying neighbors just became states themselves shortly before Israel did except Egypt and Syria.  The Palestinian Arabs were from surrounding lands that came in because they were after jobs with the Jews who were building in Palestine.  No one really was living in Palestine except nomadic Bedouins on their camels and Jews who had never left from 70 CE and those that had been joining them through the ages with the biggest influx coming during the 1880's onward.

Actually, the UN has been going down the tube since the mid-1970s when an Arab-Soviet 3rd World bloc joined to form what amounted to a pro-PLO lobby at the UN, and so very true in the General Assembly where these countries--nearly all dictatorships or autocracies--frequently voted together to pass resolutions attacking Israel and supporting the PLO.  They had the audacity in 1974 to pick Yasir Arafat to address it, and he did with a holster attached to his hip.

Moon uttered this comment only 6 days ago on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 and one of the first to know of it was PM Netanyahu who was furious!  He said that Moon is stoking Palestinian terrorism.

All civilization is threatened by Ban Ki-moon's going along with such a philosophy.  If hijacking and airplane bombing and terrorism such as coming from the terrorists in Gaza and Judea-Samaria, then ISIS terrorism will be  acceptable and  it will be copied and lead to a bomber strapped with a nuclear device threatening all the nations.  The whole world must accept Resolution 1377 unequivocally.  A terrorist is just that;  a terrorist.

France has been hit by terrorism.  Terrorism is happening already in the USA.  The worst of it has been going on in Jerusalem where Arabs are stabbing Jews as they walk by, or ramming crowds of Jews with their automobiles. IS has destroyed Syria and Iraq and is creating their own caliphate.  All countries are on terror alert.  Since December 224, 2015, Israelis have had 100 days of such terrorism going on.   The green light for such behavior has been turned on by Ban Ki-moon.

Update: 2/4/16  http://www.aish.com/jw/me/Ban-Ki-Moon-Gets-it-Wrong-Again.html?s=mm  Excellent article, a must read.  Points out that occupation is not the reason for violence but the fact that Jews live on the land.
"In the infamous Arab pogrom in Hebron in 1929 there was no occupation. In 1948, when seven Arab nations vowed to slay every Jew and conquer every last inch of territory allotted to Israel by the United Nations, there was no occupation. In 1967, Israel did not occupy the West Bank or Judea and Samaria and the Arabs were bent on Israel’s destruction. And when Israel decided to voluntarily cede to Gaza to the Palestinians as a trial first step towards peace, we all know what happened – because of the imaginary and nonexistent “occupation”.

HISTORY OF ISRAEL IN A CAPSULE

Nadene Goldfoot
JUDAH was created out of Southern Israel after King Solomon died in 922 BCE.  Jeroboam took over next, then Nadab, Baasha, Elah, Zimri, Omri, Ahab, Ahaziah, Jehoram, Jehu, Jehoahaz, Jehoash, Jeroboam, Zecharia, Shallum, Meneahem, Pekahiah, Pekah, and Hoshea from 730-721 BCE.

Moses had died outside of Canaan in about 1271 BCE and Joshua took the 12 tribes inside and subdued the land.
King Saul was the first king of Israel and reigned in the 11th century BCE.  He was of the tribe of Benjamin.  .
David of the tribe of Judah  became king. and ruled from 1010 BCE to 970 BCE.

His son, Solomon b: 961-d: 920 BCE  was to build the 1st Temple.  So far, the land has been in the hands of the Israelites for 351 years up to now.  The land of Israel was divided after Solomon's death between the North and the South, the North being referred to as Samaria, the name of their new capital.  Israel was more luxurious and the more powerful kingdom.  The south was renamed as Judah, the name of the tribe that inhabited this part of Israel.  However, Israel was weakened by internal fights between rival dynasties and recurring wars with the kingdom of Syria which resided in Damascus.  .

10 Tribes being led away by King of Assyria, SHALMANASER IV reigned from 728-722 BCE
In 721 BCE  the Assyrians attacked Israel  and took away 10 of the 12 tribes as slaves.  These people were replaced by new settlers that the Assyrians brought in.

Finally, Judah, which was smaller and more secluded geographically and more spiritual, having held onto Jerusalem and the Temple,  now being a smaller with a smaller military force, was overcome in 586 BCE by the Babylonians.  They destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple.  They also took large number of the Judeans and deported them and the monarchy was abolished.  GEDALIAH, a member of the Old Royal House, tried to renew and organize political life was ended by his assassination in 582 BCE.

Then the Persians (Iran) stepped in.  King Cyrus overthrew the Babylonian Empire.  He allowed the children of the exiles to return home to Judah and set up a center in 539 BCE.  It took them a long time to do this.  EZRA AND NEHEMIAH  had to leave the comfort of the Persian court and return with them to set it up.  The former northern section of Israel was now filled with Samaritans, named for the capital of Samaria, but they were not children of the original exiles.  They were of mixed heritage, and were not practicing Judaism.  So they were excluded from participation in the re-established Judah as it was feared that they would contaminate or even dominate the southern society.  Judah then was called Judea and was now a semi-autonomous Persian vassal state since Cyrus had allowed its re-development. Judea was administered by the high priest of the Jerusalem Temple.

The Samaritans had their center on Mt. Gerizim which is in the hills of Ephraim facing Mt. Ebal.  Shechem (Nablus) is situated in the intervening valley.  When the Israelites entered Canaan, a ceremony was held at which the people assembled on this mountain and blessed all who observed the law, and those on Mt. Ebal cursed those who profaned it. The mountain is 2,907 feet high.

In the next scene we see ALEXANDER THE GREAT invading the country.  They of course replace the Persian influence with Greek dominance which resulted in the establishment of Greek colonies along the coast and around the Jordan Valley which gave the entire country a European rather than Asiatic orientation.  Nothing changed in the general political scene, however.

The Ptolemies of Egypt shared alternate control and the Seleucides of Syria.  This went on until the 2nd century BCE when the attempt of ANTIOCHUS EPIPHANES of Syria tried to hellenize the country by force in the Jewish religion and in their established culture.  This led to the HASMONEAN revolt in 165 BCE and the reestablishment for the 1st time since 586 BCE of the full independence under the HASMONEAN HOUSE in 142 BCE which converted its rule into a monarchy by 104 BCE.

What they had on their hands were wars of conquest, one after the other, particularly under JOHN HYRCANUS from 135 to 104 BCE.  where they extended their rule over the whole land of Judea.

Now we see that though the Greeks were strong on the coast and the Samaritans were in the central hill country, almost all the land was inhabited by the Jewish people.  THE GALILEE in particular was a center of patriotic sentiment.  In 63 BCE, the ROMANS were expanding in the Middle East and Judea was brought to their political orbit.  For a period of many centuries, it was part of the roman Empire, whether administerred by members of the HASMONEAN dynasty, by the house of HEROD, or directly by the Roman PROCURATORS and PROCONSULS.

There was a time between 55 to 49 BCE, 6 years, when it was a vassal kingdom under PARTHIAN control, and during the 2 great Jewish revolts of 66 to 70 CE when Jerusalem and the Temple was burned down,  and again with BAR KOKHBA from 132 to 135 CE.  Jews had been living here for 1,406 years.  Those revolts led to thousands of Jews being killed so that there was a depopulation of great parts of the country and again non-Jewish settlers being introduced into the land and many parts, particularly in the former Judea losing their Jewish character.

Jews didn't give up.  A solid Jewish life did continue to maintain itself after 135 CE, principally in Galilee where is had been the strongest.  It was based there on agriculture as it had been formerly.  The control came from the intellectual leaders and the Patriarchs (presidents of the SANHEDRIN)  whose authority was actually in time recognized by the ROMAN government.  This became the period of the intense intellectual life reflected in the writings of the Mishnah, the Palestinian Talmud and the Midrash.

There were a lot of areas in the land that had a pagan aspect.  The new administrative center on the coast, CAESAREA,  was lacking Jews.  They had become a minority.  This city had become the hub of Roman-Greek intellectual life.  Some other cities of the DECAPOLIS in the Northern Samaria were centers of philosophical study.

The Christianization of the Roman Empire  came about in the 4th century.  This brought about waves of violence and anti-Jewish legislation which was adopted by the emperors.  The result was the complete undermining of the position of Jews in what was  called Palestine (Israel and Judah) as of 135 CE by the Romans.  The land became the focus of Christian piety.  The Patriarchate was abolished in 425 which not only reflected the Christian distaste for Jews but stimulated the process of it as well.

Jews remained as strong Jews in their religion and there was considerable intellectual activity as shown in the development of Hebrew poetry, the Midrash and the Masorah now written.  However, Jews had become the minority in their own country.  They were indistinguishable from any other Roman or in due course from the Byzantine province.

The Jews helped the PERSIAN invaders in 614 to 628 and suffered when they had to leave.

Under the Moslems, who conquered the country in 635 to 640 Jews were looked upon as unimportant, though and attempt was made to revive intellectual life by the establishment of a Gaonate, an imitation of that of Babylonian Jewry.  Under the UMMAYAD CALIPHS, ruling from DAMASCUS,  the country prospered.

PALESTINE was neglected when the ABBASID DYNASTY transferred its capital to Baghdad.  PALESTINE again became a problem between rival rulers of EGYPT AND IRAQ.  This caused the Jewish population to be reduced once again to insignificance.

The CRUSADERS of 1099 came and were followed by the setting up of a western feudal state in the country which lasted only until 1187 because of the turmoil of war.  By 1291, the last Christian stronghold at Acre fell.

The MONGOLS, also called the TARTARS came along in the 13th century and added to the devastation of the land.  In 1244-1260 and again in 1271  they had attacked Syria. "The Mamluks took advantage of the weakened state of the Mongol forces, and, negotiating a passive alliance with the remnants of the Crusader forces in Acre, advanced northwards to engage the Mongols at the pivotal Battle of Ain Jalut in September 1260." The country was now under Egyptian rule and was not important politically to anyone else."For about three months, until the Mamluks returned in May 1300, Mulay's forces were in technical control over Syria, and some Mongols engaged in raids as far south as Jerusalem and Gaza.  However, when the Mamluks returned from Egypt, the remaining Mongols retreated with little resistance.

By 1517, it was conquered along with Egypt, by Turkey who thought of it as just a remote and unimportant province .  They regarded it as little more than a source of revenue.  This was the period of the renewal of the Jewish settlement  in their ancient land on any scale--in part through the arrival after 1492 of refugees from SPAIN and PORTUGAL, in part through the emergence of SAFED as the great KABBALISTIC CENTER, and to a minor extent, through the attempt of JOSEPH NASI and then SOLOMON IBN YAISH to establish and autonomous center around TIBERIAS.

The Jews of the Diaspora (Europe, Spain, Middle East) kept in contact with the Jews of Palestine was maintained by the Emissaries from the 4 Holy Cities of JERUSALEM, SAFED, TIBERIAS AND HEBRON.  They would travel abroad to collect alms for the maintenance of the Jewish institutions.  The OTTOMAN EMPIRE'S local Pashas were frequently corrupt and oppressive like Muhammad Ibn Farukh, Pasha of Jerusalem, who barbarously maltreated the Jews there in 1625. On the other hand, local rulers who kept a firmer government like the Beduin sheikh Dahir al-Umar, who rebuilt Tiberias in 1740 with Jewish participation led by Rabbi Hayyim ABULAFIA, or Ahmed al-Jazzar, governor of Acre from 1775-1804, were unable to perpetuate their government.

By the 18th century, the Jewish settlement was reinforced by an Ashkenazi (European Jewish)  immigration.  First of the Hasidim came in 1777.  They were followed by the Mitnaggedim (Perushim) whose early villages were mainly in Galilee (northern Israel).  NAPOLEON's campaign was in 1799 when he called on the Jews to rally to his armies and help free the Holy Land from the TURKS.  It didn't happen then.

MEHEMET ALI OF EGYPT kept a firm administration which seemed promising in 1831.  but was ended by the Powers of England, Austria, Prussia and Russia after only 9 years.  The importance of international politics was realized both by the cutting of the Suez Canal and by the southerly advance of Russia.  Visitors came to Palestine like Mark Twain and so did Russian Jews escaping pogroms.

Sir Moses Montefiore of England
Religions of all faiths were established in  great profusion.  The Jewish population grew.  There had been restrictions on Jews who wanted to live in Jerusalem,  but they were removed and soon it had a Jewish majority.  SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE and others tried to found  Jewish agricultural colonies.  In 1882, the BILU settlers of the 1st ALIYAH came from Russia and created a town.  They were backed by the resources of BARON EDMOND de ROTHSCHILD.  THE   ALIYAH from 1904 onward placed Jewish rural life in Palestine and it was supported by a Hebrew-speaking culture.

The BRITISH CAMPAIGNS of 1917-1918 at the end of WWI led to the termination of  TURKISH rule.  Administration of the land was done by the LEAGUE OF NATIONS and given to GREAT BRITAIN to carry out for 30 years.  They were the Mandatory Power with the object of implementing the BALFOUR DECLARATION.  SIR HERBERT SAMUEL was the first HIGH COMMISSIONER from 1920 to 1925.  In 1922, an arrangement was negotiated for political reasons by WINSTON CHURCHILL, then the British colonial secretary.  He detatched TRANSJORDAN from the historic Palestine and set it up as a separate emirate barring Jews from living there. The Brits were to carry out the Jews ability to have their Jewish Homeland and they were going against it.  Jewish political rights were now restricted.  Arab objections seemed to be fostered by them.  Immigration and expansion of Jews were limited.  Jews came anyway, if not in droves, in dribbles, and they changed the face of the country.  New villages and towns were created, swamps were drained and forests were planted--by the Jews.  Tel Aviv was built and expanded.

European Jews destined for their deaths in Holocaust
The Arabs benefited from the Jews' presence.  The landowning effendi enjoyed the advantage over the hard-working peasant.  This economic expansion was stimulated after the beginning of Nazi persecution in Europe in 1933 when Jewish immigration increased.

In 1936 Arabs rioted, urged to do so by Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem.    He's the one who had gone to Germany and spoke with Hitler.  The Italian Fascist government was anxious to embarrass England in the Middle East, and they went along with the Germans against the Jews. The total population then was 1,367,000.  Of this number, 384,000 were Jews. The development of the country by the Jews continued, regardless.  Illegal immigration had to be the way to enter for the Jews from 1940.  The Brits continued to try to keep the Jews out, even during the Holocaust from 1939 to 1945.

The Exodus arrived with Jewish refugees
Jews found themselves fighting the Brits and the Arabs.  From 1945 onward, large-scale clashes happened and the Brits continued to prevent immigration.  They turned the problem over to the UNITED NATIONS which recommended on November 1947  the division of Palestine into an Arab state and  a Jewish state.  The British 30 year mandate ended on May 15, 1948, and so on the day before, May 14th, Israel announced their state.  They had a war on their hands because the Arabs refused to accept the ruling of the UN partition resolution.  .  This WAR OF INDEPENDENCE happened because the Arabs all attacked the new state of Israel.  They came from the regular armies of Egypt, Transjordan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and a Saudi-Arabian contingent.    The act caused Israel to expand.  How 650,000 Jews, the total Jewish population, managed to fight off the soldiers of all the neighboring Arab states is one of the world's miracles.Israelis lost 6,000 fighters.

At the same time,  the King of Jordan took the Old City of Jerusalem and almost the whole of Transjordan and annexed it.  Egypt took and annexed the Gaza Strip at this time.  Many Arabs fled the scene.  A million and a half Jewish immigrants arrived.

The Land of Israel was for the 1st time in the modern period.  An armistice was signed in 1949, but the Arabs continued to fight Wars against Israel again in 1956, 1967, 1973 and Palestinians from Lebanon in 1982.  After that, there have been riots, intifadas, all sorts of attacks even up to today with knifing and using cars to ram crowds.  It hasn't always been peaceful, but a good life has continued amid havoc. After all the times of living in the Diaspora, Jews are home and are willing to fight for their special home.

Forty Thousand Surviving the Fall of Jerusalem in 70 CE: A Population Bottleneck

Nadene Goldfoot
Jewish Slaves led away from Jerusalem in 70 CE forced to carry Temple Loot by Romans
The Arch of Titus, celebrating the Roman sack of Jerusalem and the Temple, still stands in Rome.

Did the Romans plot the burning of Jerusalem to coincide with the day the most people would be in harm's way?  This siege of the Jewish capital, Jerusalem began on the very day of the Passover sacrifice to which many thousands of pilgrims had arrived from all parts of the country.  This made the number of besieged people very high. "The Roman army, led by the future Emperor Titus, with Tiberius Julius Alexander as his second-in-command, besieged and conquered the city of Jerusalem, which had been occupied by its Jewish defenders in 66. The siege ended with the sacking of the city and the destruction of its famous Second Temple. " In this first Jewish-Roman War that took place from February to August in the year of 70 CE, the Romans fought with 70,000 soldiers and the Jews had a total of about 40,000 total.  All the fighting Jews were slain.

Romans burned down Temple in 70 CE and the city of Jerusalem
Among the people were many from beyond the Euphrates River and other foreign lands.  1,100,000 men perished during the siege.  97,000 were taken captive and sold and of those only 40,000 survived.  All the citizens of Jerusalem and the rest were sold as slaves.  Some were sent into the mines in Egypt.  Others were sent among the provinces for the circuses of Rome.  Where did the 40,000 who survived settle after having been allowed to go where they liked?

"Titus began his siege a few days before Passover which falls on the 14th of Nissan( in 2015 would have happened on Wednesday, April 1st), surrounding the city, with three legions (MacedonicaXII FulminataXV Apollinaris) on the western side and a fourth (Fretensis) on the Mount of Olives to the east  If the reference in his Jewish War at 6:421 is to Titus's siege, though difficulties exist with its interpretation, then at the time, according to Josephus, Jerusalem was thronged with many people who had come to celebrate Passover. The thrust of the siege began in the west at the Third Wall, north of the Jaffa Gate. By May, this was breached and the Second Wall also was taken shortly afterwards, leaving the defenders in possession of the Temple and the upper and lower city. After Jewish allies killed a number of Roman soldiers, Titus sent Josephus, the Jewish historian, to negotiate with the defenders; this ended with Jews wounding the negotiator with an arrow, and another sally was launched shortly after. Titus was almost captured during this sudden attack, but escaped.

Flavius Josephus, a Jewish general whose real name was Yoseph ben Mattityahu ha-Cohen, c 38 to 100 CE, was himself of a priestly family who survived only to be the slave of the Romans as their historian.  In 64, before Jerusalem was burned down, he went to Rome on a semi-public mission.  In 66 the Jewish people had revolted and temporarily regained their independence.  He was then regarded as an expert in political affairs and was sent as a representative of the Revolutionary Government to the Galilee where he assumed the supreme military command.  He then quarreled violently with the patriotic extremists who accused him of temporizing tendencies. He estimated that during his time there were 80,000 Jews living in Jerusalem.  He said 6,000 were Pharisees, the forerunners of today's rabbis.

Then the Romans attacked in 67, and he directed the resistance and was besieged in Jotapata, an ancient town in the Galilee which Josephus fortified and held against the Romans in the war of 66-70 CE. but on the capture of the city, he did the unthinkable and went over onto the Roman side.  From then on he called himself  Flavius, the family name of Vespasian, the Roman Emperor from 69 to 79. Emperor Nero had sent him in 67 to subdue the Judean rebellion and by 68 he had conquered the Galilee, Transjordan and the Judean coast before suspending operations on receiving the new of Nero's death.  In 69 he became emperor, and the campaign was ended by his son, TITUS. Vespasian patronized Josephus and the Talmud reports that speaks of his favorable treatment of Rabbi Johanan ben Zakkai. Josephus said that during this war from 66 to 73 CE, 1,100,000 Jews were killed.  Tacitus, the Roman historian estimated that 600,000 Jews had died in the war.

"Hillel Geva estimated from the archaeological evidence that the actual population of Jerusalem before its 70 CE destruction was at most 20,000.

Visitors at Western Wall

"Geva was among the senior archeologists who had  the privilege of excavating the Western Wall compound and the Jewish quarter for more than a decade after the reunification of the city in 1967. "

Emperor Titus seizes Jerusalem
Josephus went with Vespasian and Titus during the siege of Jerusalem and tried to persuade the Jews to abandon their resistance.  After the revolt was crushed by the Romans, he was given some confiscated estates in Judea, but lived in Rome instead.  In his own writings, he tried to show his integrity as a patriotic leader and his devotion to the Roman cause.

He wrote THE JEWISH WAR, towards the end of Vespasian's reign which was most likely based on another writing-THE ANTIQUITIES OF THE JEWS, which gave the history of the Jews from the beginning to the outbreak of the War with Rome.

By then  the Jews had been suffering from the domination of the Persian Empire, and then later, the conquering armies of Alexander the Great.  When Alexander died, his vast kingdom was divided among his generals.  They had a power struggle which engulfed all the nations of the Middle East and Israel found itself under the sway of the Seleucid Dynasty.  They were Greek kings who reigned from Syria.

We learn in the Talmud that when Alexander the Great and his conquering legions advanced on Jerusalem, the High Priest Shimon HaTzaddik met them with a delegation of elders.  Alexander saw them coming, dismounted and prostrated himself before this Jewish sage.  Alexander explained that each time he went into battle, he saw a vision in the likeness of this High Priest leading the Greek troops to victory.  Alexander believed the Jews had spiritual powers.  He was a king and generous ruler and canceled the Jewish taxes during Sabbatical years and even offered animals to be sacrificed on his behalf in the Temple.  His heirs failed to sustain his benevolence.

The Romans had no leader like Alexander the Great.  They  had destroyed the Jews' 2nd Temple in Jerusalem and then took over the city.  On this date of 70 CE they burned the capital down and took away Jews as slaves for Rome, however,  many others were able to get out and flee.  Then the Romans built their own temple over the spot where Solomon's 2nd Temple had stood.

Individual Jews had lived in France before this date of 70 CE.  There had been organized Jewish communities in France during the period of the Roman Empire. The earliest Jews who were to be called Ashkenazis got to France from Rome, and then went into Germany as well where they were there for a long period of time, long enough to mix German in with Hebrew which was called Yiddish.

We know that many Jews remained in Judah and Israel that the Romans didn't catch.  Those that left went in 3 directions.  One was to the neighboring Middle Eastern countries and settle there.  The other went to France and the Rhineland "Germany." and became the Ashkenazim. . Some had gone in the direction of Spain where they became the Sephardim.

Every country has coveted the Land of Israel, for it is located between 2 continents, Asia and Africa and sits on the crossroads there.  It's also between 2 seas, the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, making transportation so much easier.  Ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Crusaders, Ottoman Turks and finally the British from WWI have all traversed the Land on their way to further conquest.
Jews have faced a bottleneck in their population.  A bottleneck is a sharp reduction in the size of a population due to a cause like human activity in their case.  They either recover from it or become extinct.   Conversely, depending upon the causes of the bottleneck, the survivors may have been the genetically fittest individuals, hence increasing the frequency of the fitter genes within the gene pool, while shrinking it.  It seems like we have had many bottlenecks since then with the biggest one during the Holocaust with the loss of 6 million Jews.

Levite Priest

"Y-chromosomal Aaron is the name given to the hypothesized most recent common ancestor of many of the patrilineal Jewish priestly caste known as Kohanim (singular "Kohen", "Cohen", or Kohane).  In the Torah, this ancestor is identified as Aaron, the brother of Moses. The hypothetical most recent common ancestor was therefore dubbed "Y-chromosomal Aaron", by analogy to Y-chromosomal Adam.
The original scientific research was based on the discovery that a majority of present-day Jewish Kohanim either share, or are only one step removed from, a pattern of values for 6 Y-STR markers, which researchers named the Cohen Modal Haplotype (CMH). later findings using a larger number of Y-STR markers to gain higher resolution more specific genetic signatures, has indicated that about half of contemporary Jewish Kohanim, who share Y-chromosomal haplogroup J1c3 (also called J-P58), appear to be closely related.  While many Arabs carry the J1c3d haplogroup, about half of the Jews carry this line.
"Despite their long-term residence in different countries and isolation from one another, most Jewish populations were not significantly different from one another at the genetic level. The results support the hypothesis that the paternal gene pools of Jewish communities from Europe, North Africa and the Middle East descended from a common Middle Eastern ancestral population, and suggest that most Jewish communities have remained relatively isolated from neighboring non-Jewish communities during and after the Diaspora." (M.F. Hammer, Proc. Nat'l Academy of Science, June 9, 2000)" "Although the Ashkenazi (European) community separated from their Mediterranean ancestors some 1,200 years ago and lived among Central and Eastern European gentiles, their paternal gene pool still resembles that of other Jewish and Semitic groups, originating in the Middle East."
Aaron's line of Kohens were indeed survivors.  Despite a bottleneck, we still have some after 4,000 years.
