Difficulties with Venezuela and Latin America Taking in Jewish Refugees in 20s and 30s.

Nadene Goldfoot
Goldfoot, Robinson and Oster Fathers and children, c1945.
The man on the right holding a little girl is my uncle, Werner Oster, who left Boppard, Germany
for the USA on May 4th, 1939 on the ship, Washington. They landed in New York on May 13th.
He was only 23, but was one of the last Jews to get out of Germany in 1939.
He had been a great soccer player in Germany.

He came to the USA, which was hard to do.  He had to have a sponsor (my great Uncle Max Turn,
who had to take all economic responsibility for him.)  Werner was single then.  A butcher and sausage maker, Max got him a job with my father, a fledgling in the business and 31 years old at the time.
The picture shows that he married my father's sister and these children are my cousins.  I'm sitting on the
grass of our back yard and am the oldest.  My father is behind me holding my brother.

Nazism was not only threatening all Jews on this planet,  it was already starting to take lives in the 30s in Germany.  Some Jews, seeing the writing on the wall, sought out countries that would take them in.  Werner made it to the USA, but his parents and 16 year old red-headed sister died in the Holocaust.

It had been difficult to get into the USA if you were Jewish.  There was a bill in 1921 and another in 1924 to cut the numbers of Jews entering.  " The 1921 measure capped the number of immigrants allowed in at roughly 350,000 per year. It also established quotas from  individual countries, derived from their percentage of the U.S. population. This was a rigged system, as those percentages included how many Americans were descended from that group’s original settlers. Some nations therefore received unusually large quotas, despite minimal immigration in the few years before the bill’s enactment. If ten people had arrived in 1750 from Great Britain, the number of that original cluster’s descendants would be huge by the 20th century. The base year, moreover, was set back a decade to 1910 to exclude from the figures all those who had recently arrived from war-torn Europe after the sea lanes were safe again in 1918. It was not immigrants in general who were blocked, but certain nationalities and religions (JEWS).   Fiorello LaGuardia branded the 1924 act “the creation of a narrow mind that was nurtured by a hating heart.”  We Jews remain as 2% of the USA population.

So, South America seemed like a good place to go, but they found that most of the countries there required a person to show their baptismal certificate to make sure that they were Christians.  They were not anxious to take in Jews.  Many of the South American countries had already been populated by Germans, and many of those followed the Nazi persuasion.  Naturally, after the war, the Nazis became the refugees and they populated the South American countries easily.

Jacobsthal family with aunt and uncle in Amsterdam
ready to immigrate to Chile February 1938
"These attitudes were reflected in increasingly tight immigration laws introduced throughout Latin America in the late 1930s (Mexico in 1937; Argentina in 1938; Cuba, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Paraguay, and Uruguay in 1939). The results of these laws were striking. Argentina, which had admitted 79,000 Jewish immigrants between 1918 and 1933, officially admitted 24,000 between 1933 and 1943. Another 20,000 Jews entered Argentina illegally, crossing the border from neighboring countries. Brazil admitted 96,000 Jewish immigrants between 1918 and 1933, but only 12,000 between 1933 and 1941."

After Kristallnacht in November 1938, many Jews within Germany decided that it was time to leave. Though many German Jews had emigrated in the preceding years, the Jews who remained had a more difficult time leaving the country because emigration policies had been toughened. By 1939, not only were visas needed to be able to enter another country but money was also needed to leave Germany. Since many countries, especially the United States, had immigration quotas, visas were near impossible to acquire within the short time spans in which they were needed. For many, the visas were acquired after it was too late.

Saturday, May 13, 1939 these Jews had sailed.
Hopeful to land in Cuba,  from Germany on St. Louis escaping
Nazi persecution

St. Louis in Havana, Cuba's port

In this climate, Cuban authorities denied entry to most passengers on the ship the St. Louis, when it docked in Havana in May 1939. "With a diminishing supply of food and pressures from Hapag to return to Germany, Captain Schroeder ordered the ship to change heading to return to Europe."  They sailed to their deaths.  Before they had left Cuba, about 2 people had jumped into the ocean committing suicide, knowing what would happen to them.  In November 1941, the German government virtually cut off the flow of Jewish refugees into Latin America when it banned all Jewish emigration from territories under its control.

Coro, Venezuela
                                                        Venezuela
"The History of the Jews in Venezuela dates to the middle of the 17th century, when records suggest that groups of marranos (Spanish and Portuguese descendants of baptized Jews suspected of secret adherence to Judaism) lived in TucacasCaracas and Maracaibo."  Marranos would have originally been Sephardim Jews.

Jews came to a country that "is predominantly Roman Catholic and speak Spanish. The majority of Venezuelans are the result of a mixture of EuropeansAfricans and Amerindians. 51.6% of the population are Mestizos of mixed European, African and Amerindian ancestry and 43.6% of Venezuelans consider themselves White of European ancestry and/or Middle Eastern. Another 3.6% is Black African, while 2% is of full Amerindian ancestry and around 1.2% other races "

Venezuela was one South American country that received Jews back in 1850.  They were West Indian Sephardim.  Like with all places with a Christian population, there were anti-Semitic outbreaks of resentment in this country which is situated on the northern part of the continent on the Caribbean Sea.  Such anti-Semitic outbreaks occurred in Coro in 1855 and again in 1902.  "Coro is the capital of Falcón State and the oldest city in the west of Venezuela. It was founded on July 26, 1527 by Juan de Ampíes as Santa Ana de Coro.  As Neu-Augsburg, it was the first German colony in the Americas under the Welsers.  The temperature in Coro for the whole year continues to range in the high 90s and low 100s.  "The Jewish Cemetery of Coro is the oldest Jewish cemetery in continuous use in the Americas Its origin can be located in the 19th century, when Sephardic Jews from the Dutch colony of Curaçao began to migrate to the Venezuelan city of Santa Ana de Coro in 1824."

In the 20th century, eastern Europeans and German Jews (Ashkenazim Jews)  entered the country until barred after World War II  " In 1907, the Israelite Beneficial Society, which became the Israelite Association of Venezuela in 1919, was created as an organization to bring the Jews who were scattered throughout the country together.  Jewish prayer and holiday services took place in small houses in Caracas and towns like Los Teques and La Guaira. By 1917, the number of Jewish citizens rose to 475, and to 882 in 1926."

.Jews could enter after World War I from 1918 to 1933.   However,  from 1933 to 1945, only 84,000 Jewish refugees were able to come into South America and this was less than half of the number that had come in 15 years before 1933.  Some even managed to enter through illegal channels.

Tiferet Israel Synagogue, Caracas, attacked in 2009
The reason they found such difficulties in entering was of anti-Semitism.  Then, the population feared the economic competition of too many people looking for jobs.  Those that were allowed to come in had to find work in agriculture, but after a while most found there way to cities where they could use some of the business skills.  The populations were made up of a lot of Germans, and they went along with the Nazi's lack of morality.

However, many Jews remained and in Venezuela, they played a leading role in developing the country's trade and in modernizing the capital, Caracas.

By 1990, the Jewish population was about  20,000, and most lived in the capital then.  some 90% of the Jewish youth attended Jewish schools.  "Currently, some 9,000 Jews live in Venezuela, down from about 25,000 in the 1990s. "

Recently, anti Semitic graffito appeared near a Caracas Metro station: "Be patriotic, kill a Jew." Elsewhere in the city, another reads: "Jewish pigs, another 6 million." this is going on in Venezuela most likely because " Venezuelan President,  Nicolás Maduro,  organized a rally labeled the "March Against Israeli Genocide." There, the Venezuelan president called upon "the Jews that live in our lands" to "stop the massacre, and the murder of those innocent boys and girls."

He was referring to the Palestinians, which shows he doesn't understand that it's been the Palestinians from Gaza who have been shelling Israel with rockets, mortars and missiles.  These past few weeks the Palestinians in Jerusalem have been stabbing Jews and ramming crowds with their cars.  Just yesterday they stabbed an Uruguayan Jewish  tourist and police.  The Jews in Venezuela are powerless to stop any killings going on in Israel, and this President should knew that.  What he's doing is just instigating more attacks on Jews, both in Israel and in Venezuela.

Donald Trump's Position on Israel

Nadene Goldfoot
Franklin Delano Roosevelt
(1/30/1882-4/12/1945)
He had polio and was confined to a wheel chair.

Jews in the United States have tended to be Democrats at least since Franklin Delano Roosevelt's election, the USA's 32nd president from March 4, 1933 to April 12, 1945 when he died.  He was the Democrat from New York.  In 2008 when Obama was first elected, 71% of Jews identified themselves in the Gallup poll as Democrats.  By 2014, 61% are identifying themselves as Democrats.

President Roosevelt

Donald Trump was a Democrat, but is now running as president in the Republican Party.  He has "consistently and strongly supported Israeli positions on many critical issues."  He agreed with Netanyahu on the Iran nuclear deal and Israeli-Palestinian relations.

He even criticized President Barack Obama about his attitude toward Israel and thinks Netanyahu is a good Prime Minister for Israel. " He accused Obama and the USA Secretary of State John Kerry of having sold Israel out and that it was the USA's job to do everything possible to protect and defend Israel.  He said that Israel was the only stable democracy in the region that is not run by dictators.  He called Israel America's best and most reliable friend." He said that Israel is the cornerstone of USA policy in the Middle East.

He admires Israel for being pioneers in medicine and communication and a close fair trading partner.  His father was always loyal to Israel and he has also, and said he would be doing more for Israel than anybody else.
Salute to Israel New York Parade 2004
He's proven his admiration by having served as the grand marshal for the Israel parade in New York in 2004. He has received many awards from American Jewish organizations for supporting Israel.  Algemeiner, a Jewish news organization also on the web gave him such an award last February 2014.  Upon acceptance, he said that "we love Israel and will fight for Israel 100%, 1,000%.  It will be there forever!

Parchin, Iran and nuclear site
When Trump declared his candidacy on June 16, 2015, he attacked the Iran nuclear deal by calling it "a disaster that could threaten Israel's survival."  Those were also my sentiments, exactly, and many of my friends.

He and Netanyahu get along very well.  Before the 2013 Israeli election, he recorded a 30 second video message endorsing the Likud leader.

The last 8 years of USA presidency has been with Barack Hussein Obama II, and they have been disastrous for Israel. The things he has done to cause pain for Israel has been the following:
1. Blaming only Israel for the impasse in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations which has only strengthened Palestinian recalcitrance.
2. General handling of Israel, White House snub March 2010, leaving Netanyahu, staff in work room while he had dinner with Michelle which was 2nd snub.  .
3. Refusal to use the term "Islamic terrorism"

4. One thing that irks me is the referring to ISIS terrorists as ISIL (which includes the Levant-Jordan, Israel and Egypt) in ISIS's hands and references as only as non-Muslim about the Islamic State, which denies the  reality.

John McCain after returning from Viet Nam on April 24, 1973,
age 37.  Today he's 79 years old born August 29, 1936.
Things Trump admires about Israel are not necessarily things he has vocalized as his position, however.  He has made his own statements about prisoners of war, a stand Israel feels very strongly about but that Trump has said he doesn't admire.  This came up with Senator John McCain who was a POW in Vietnam for 6 years after his plane went down. He was a pilot.   John's father was an admiral and the Vietnamese offered him a special early release which he refused, wanting to be treated like others in this position.  Trump glibly remarked that" he was a "war hero only because he got captured."

IDF Gilad Shalit on October 18, 2011 at age 25 after 5 years as a Prisoner of War from being kidnapped. in a cross-border raid via underground tunnels near the Israeli border.
Captured in Israel by Hamas terrorists, and held hostage for five years until released in exchange for 1,027 Palestinian prisoners
Israel doesn't feel that way at all towards their POW, Gilad Shalit who as a soldier was captured and held as a hostage for 5 years by Hamas in Gaza.  Trump's crass comment was that "I like people who weren't captured."

Another sore point are Trump's statements about immigration to the USA.  On June 16, 2015 he made comments   about Mexico sending in people who bring in drugs, are criminals and so bring in crime and rape people as well here.  Then he included other Latin American countries in this accusation.  After California's San Bernardino massacre, he called for a temporary ban on the entry of MUSLIMS to the USA until the government figured out "what the hell is going on."  Now, this is a sore point with Jews who have suffered being on the immigrant side throughout the centuries.  They have been saved by countries following open immigration.  This has happened with Jews fleeing Russia and Eastern Europe from anti-Semitism which developed into pogroms as well.  They have experienced mass immigration from the Arab countries to Israel in 1948 when Israel was created.

Ship, St. Louis refused entrance to Cuba with 900+ refugeesGerman Jewish refugees return to Antwerp, Belgium, aboard the ocean liner St. Louis on June 17, 1939, after they had been denied entrance to Cuba and the USA. Miami was so close they could see the lights, but they were not allowed to land.
Before and after WWII, Jews could not get into other countries including the USA.  We all remember these horrors so gasped when Trump felt this way towards the thousands of refugees we all see on TV today fleeing from Iraq and Syria.  The difference of course is that Jews were not dangerous to others, but that some Muslim refugees could be.  Also, we all know that once a position has been taken, like stopping immigration of refugees can be longer than they can continue to be alive.  Jews died when refused entrance at the start of WWII.  My father was 21 years old in 1929, the year of the stock market crash causing everyone to be out of jobs.  By 1933 when Jews started to enter the USA from Europe, people were still out of work.  Perhaps they were afraid Jews would take American jobs away from them.  That's still no excuse!

On December 3, 2015, he made another faux pas.  He told Jewish Republicans rather jokingly that he thought they wouldn't back him because he was so rich and didn't need their contributions!  The Israeli media watched this newscast and saw an anti-Semitic slur instead.  It reinforced the anti-Semitic stereotyping of Jews being rich people who control the world and so can buy elections.  They didn't want anyone to think that Israel would be buying this coming election.

Jerusalem where one can find Jewish, Christian and Muslim places to see
So, Trump had told his TV audience that he was going to visit Israel on December 28th and said this just a few days before.  The fact was that it had been scheduled well in advance and had an itinerary planned 2 weeks before his Muslim ban statement on November 19th.  Because of this thoughtless comment which loomed huge in Israel's eyes, his trip had to be postponed.  He'll visit after Israel's presidential elections and said that he didn't want to put Netanyahu under any pressure.  Trump had wanted to accomplish much with this visit by contrasting his support of Israel with the Obama Administrations  abandonment of the Jewish State which really started with the Democratic Party's meeting on what to consider for this 2nd term and God and Jerusalem as Israel's capital  were taken off the platform. Oh, how the Pilgrims would have had a fit at that!

Update: 2/21/16 Donald Trump said on the 18th that he is taking a neutral position in the disagreements between the Palestinians and Israel.  Cruz attacked him for saying this in South Carolina since he feels it is showing that Trump sees it as a problem of false moral equivalency.
Update: 2/26/16  "Donald Trump: “My friendship with Israel is stronger than any other candidate’s. I want to make one thing clear: I want to strike a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. It is what I aspire to do. Peace is possible, even if it is the most difficult agreement to achieve. As far as I understand, Israel is also interested in a peace deal. I’m not saying I’ll succeed, or even that an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians is within reach, but I want to try. But in order for an agreement to happen, the Palestinians need to show interest. It’s a little difficult to reach an agreement when the other side doesn’t really want to talk to you.
“Don’t get confused there in Israel: I am currently your biggest friend. My daughter is married to a Jew who is an enthusiastic Israel supporter, and I have taken part in many Israel Day Parades. My friendship with Israel is very strong.”"

Irish Jews: Where Did They Come From?

Nadene Goldfoot
Jews may have lived in Ireland in the 12th and 13th centuries, but none were there after the expulsion of all Jews in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland in 1290.  Jews weren't allowed to return to Great Britain's England until 1655.  That's 365 years of being kept away and forced to find other lands to live in.  " Oliver Cromwell permitted Jews to return to England in 1657, over 360 years after their banishment by Edward I, in exchange for finance."

Dublin-River Liffey
Entering Ireland after 1655 were a few Anusim or Marranos, as they were distastefully called then.  These were former Jews who were forced to leave Spain or convert to Catholicism and so moved to Portugal who only needed a year or two to catch up to that dictum and did the same thing to them. They converted but kept their Judaism hidden from Christians.   They settled in Dublin after 1660-under the guise of Christianity, perhaps.  More arrived as military purveyors after the 1689 revolution.  The original settlers of Sephardis were joined by Ashkenazim.  By the 18th century, this group of Jews declined.  In 1816 only 3 Jewish families remained in Dublin with a few others in other parts of Ireland.

Something happened causing Jews to enter Ireland in 1822.  Then Ireland suffered in the Great Potato Famine from 1845 to 1852.  It was in all of Europe in the 1840s.   By 1880 there were 400 Jews living in Ireland, 90% in Dublin.  My grandfather was to follow around 1893 from Lithuania via England.  Many of these later Jews were from Lithuania and had lived in England first.
Their number had grown with the emigration from Eastern Europe at the end of the 19th century, and they spread out with communities appearing in Cork, Waterford, Limerick, Belfast and of course, Dublin.

Yitzhak HaLevi "Isaac" Herzog, 1st Chief Rabbi of Ireland
(b: December 3, 1888; d: July 25, 1959) age 70.

A chief rabbi was chosen in 1918 after the First World War who was Yitzhak Halevei Herzsog.  "Rabbi Herzog was born in ŁomżaPoland, the son of Liba Miriam (Cyrowicz) and Joel Leib Herzog. He moved to the United Kingdom with his family in 1898, where they settled in Leeds. His initial schooling was largely at the instruction of his father who was a rabbi in Leeds and then later in Paris. Later he attended the University of London, where he received his doctorate. His thesis, which made him famous in the Jewish world, concerned his claim of re-discovering Tekhelet, the type of blue dye once used for the making of Tzitzit.  A fluent speaker of the Irish language, he supported the First Dáil and the Irish republican cause during the Irish War of Independence, and became known as "the Sinn Féin Rabbi".[ He went on to serve as Chief Rabbi of Ireland between 1922 and 1936, when he immigrated to Palestine to succeed Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook as Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi upon his death."

1936 would have been a very hard time to live in Jerusalem as they had had terrible riots resulting in many deaths in 1929 spurred on by the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al-Husseini.  Again, he had to face a new language in that people in Palestine were speaking Hebrew, which is conversational Hebrew, differing from Biblical Hebrew where you read or sing the language.  Being brilliant and only 48 years old, he handled it well, I imagine.

By  1990, the Jewish population had risen to 1,600 with most Jews living mainly in Dublin, which is the Republic of Ireland.    Northern Ireland had 400 who lived mainly in Belfast.  I found my Goldfoot family on the 1901 and 1911 census in Dublin.

b: August 5, 1872 Telsiai, Lithuania d: July 19, 1912 Portland, Oregon USA
My grandfather, Nathan Abraham Goldfus/foot, must have anglicized his name in England.  The reason for leaving Lithuania may have been to escape the Russian draft.  He was of age.  He and other Jews spoke Lithuanian and Yiddish, using Yiddish among themselves.  Then they had to try to pick up a little English in England, and by moving to Ireland, had to also learn another dialect.  For instance, Marriage Certificate is written as Deimhniu Posadh in Irish.  Ireland is written as Eire.  Name is Ainm.  Surname is Sloinne.  Occupation is Sli Bheatha.  Civil Status is Stadas Sibhialta.

Nathan, born in 1872,  married a Lena Goldberg in Dublin on Tuesday, February 21, 1893 at the age of 21.  By June 14, 1893 he was at the Londonderry Port on the ship, Parisian,  headed for Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada alone.  He must have been 20 years old at least when he embarked on his voyage.   It happened in the Registrar's Office in Dublin instead of by a rabbi, so I wonder if it wasn't an arranged marriage to help him stay in the country.  He lived at 13 Arbutus Place and was listed as a commercial traveller.  That's where I found another Goldfoot  next door who no doubt was a relative.  Maybe it was a rooming house.  His father was listed on the marriage certificate as Morris Goldfoot who was deceased but had been a distiller. I believe he died in November 1878 when Nathan was 6 years old and was possibly raised by another Goldfoot, Chaim Itzak.(Abraham Chaim Goldfus) his uncle.  Oddly, Nathan will die in 1912 in Oregon in a horse and wagon accident and leave my father, Moses-Morris,  fatherless at the age of 4.

I found other Goldfoots living on Harcourt Street in Fitzwilliam; Victoria Street in Wood Quay, Hillview Street in Clifton, Antrim, Grand Parade and South Mall  in Cork, Townland Street in DED,   Clanbrassil Street in Dublin was the street of Kosher delicatessens and stores where the owners lived in the back part.  It was on the south side of the River Liffey and was the hub of Jewish Dublin.

Lena had lived at 38 Warren Street in Dublin and her father was Naftolee Goldberg, also deceased and he had been a cap maker.  Goldfoots aren't mentioned in Rivlin's book, so Jews didn't know everyone in their community, but Herzog did live on the same street as Nathan.

Most of the Jews of Dublin left Ireland and immigrated to South Africa, mainly in Johannesburg.  My grandfather left the families and immigrated to the USA through the ship, Parisian heading for Winnipeg.  In Winnipeg, there is also a Jewish population.  Languages spoken by them have been "English (among Ashkenazis) · French (among Sephardis) · Hebrew (as liturgical language, some as mother tongue) · Yiddish (by some as mother tongue and as part of a language revival· and other languages like Russian.  Jews have had to be multi-lingual.  The language I hear in South Africa by my South African cousin is very English with a strong accent.

No records are required for movements within the British Isles countries (England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Isle of Man, and Channel Islands). Records were not required for free emigrants to the United States until 1773, to Canada until 1865, or to Australia, New Zealand, the British West Indies, or South Africa until the twentieth century. No countrywide, official record  was kept for people leaving Ireland.

Immigrants to Ireland came primarily from elsewhere within the British Isles or from continental Europe by way of England. Specific groups of immigrants included refugees from various wars (such as the French Revolution), Huguenots, Germans, and Jews. Ireland kept no official immigration records, so you must rely primarily on (1) English records of immigrants who passed through England on their way to Ireland and (2) emigration records of the country from which your ancestor moved.

The very disturbing Ashleigh Banfield, CNN commentator, 48 years old, has had her own personal feelings, I've noticed,  to be against Israel that showed when she reported about Israel going into Gaza the last time.  Her emphasis and voice going up and down when talking about Israel caused me to be worried and to think she was against Israel all the way even more than her words, which came out in her questions to her co-host or person interviewed.  It's these little things one hears that causes people to turn the channel if that isn't how you interpret the facts on hand.

Now she has let her hair down and is out in the open.  "CNN host Ashleigh Banfield shockingly compares the "Jewish Terror" problem to Radical Islam, as if we are talking apples and apples—as if there is any such thing as Jewish terror in the U.S."

In fact, Jews in the USA have had to worry about terror against them which is the main fear in anti-Semitism.  Out of such attacks, we have had a small group form-somewhere, most likely New York City,  called the Jewish Defense League (JDL) , which has been the most inactive group probably in the USA.  At one time they may have been ready to take on attackers, like a group of Supermen or our fictional character, the Golom, actually the first Superman, but they have been inactive for a very long time.  "Founded by Rabbi Meir Kahane in New York City in 1968, the JDL's self-described purpose was to protect Jews from local manifestations of antisemitism."  When people have a group of defense  to protect their people from offense, how can you possibly think this is the same thing as being on the offense?  Doesn't American football teach anyone anything about being on the offense or the defense?  She's comparing apples with chickens!!!
"I'm telling you that there have been that many terrorist attacks by Jews and no one's suggesting that all Jews should be wiped out of this country for visiting. It's the same thing."
"No Ashleigh, it's not the same thing at all!"   Ron Cantor, reporter, goes on in his article to explain how this is completely wrong to say such a thing.
Jews have been under more hate crimes of anti-Semitism in the USA than any other group, about 57%, while Muslims have experienced about 16%.  One cause could be people like Ashleigh Banfield who has a vast audience to get her views across.  As I'm typing right now, she is on CNN's news here in Portland at 7:35am talking about the situation in Syria and the Republican debate last night.
Ron Cantor wrote, "This is why CNN should suspend or at least censure Ashleigh Banfield for her anti-Semitic and false claims of a Jewish terror threat or that even what happened between 1980-1985 with a tiny fringe group could be compared at all to the threat America now faces with Radical Islamic terror. Since 1968 the nut-jobs in the JDL have killed a total of seven on American soil and none since 1985. Twice as many were murdered last week in San Bernardino. Add to that Fort Hood 13, Chattanooga 5, Boston 4, Marquette Park, IL 5, and of course 9/11 2,976."
I agree with him.  She hasn't been reporting the news for a long time without the emphasis of certain words to show she found Israel always in the wrong for some time, and that is not reporting.  Now she has let her hair down to show she has a dog in the fight and is not cheering for Israel but is highly biased.
She has had a problem when reporting about Black news as well involving a hip hop film, Straight Outta Compton,  in that there was no violence-evidently as she had expected to happen from it, "There was an instantaneous outcry from many of Banfield’s fellow journalists and former co-workers who called her out for making a blatantly racist stereotype."  She can't seem to keep her personal feelings out of reporting news.

Ashley was born and raised in Canada.  She became a US citizen on October 24, 2008.

Listen, Ashley, there was a time when Jews couldn't get into any country, and that was around 1939 to the 40's when they were escaping from Germany and other parts of Europe when Nazis wanted to kill them all.  In many countries they needed baptism certificates-a clever demand to keep Jews out.  Then there was a quota system.  The ship, St Louis,   was turned back which cost the lives of those on them. "On May 13, 1939, the German transatlantic liner St. Louis sailed from Hamburg, Germany, for Havana, Cuba. On the voyage were 937 passengers. Almost all were Jews fleeing from the Third Reich. Most were German citizens, some were from eastern Europe, and a few were officially "stateless." Even to enter, Jews needed verification that they would not cost the USA one red cent-having to have a backer to take on all financial responsibility.

Was my Uncle, Werner Oster, ever lucky.  He left Boppard, Germany and boarded the George Washington on May 4th which docked in NY on the 12th.  He could have been the last Jew out of Germany, which was extremely difficult as it was to have the money and all the red tape completed.  He couldn't get his parents and 16 year old sister out as after he left, the door closed.  It was my American family who was his guarantee and employer.

You're no better than the people of those days, anti-Semitic, ready to throw Jews to the wolves.  Jews never did a thing in Germany to cause Hitler to want to kill them all except to be industrious people who were hard workers, and to have a different faith other than the predominent Catholic and Lutheran Gentile population.  They didn't have groups going crazy and shooting others or try to take over the country like ISIS is doing.
