Jews From Island of Rhodes in the Aegean Sea

Nadene Goldfoot
Rhodes, an island off of Turkey, but was a Greek-owned island
a place within the Mediterranean Sea; very close to Israel
where Jews lived undisturbed for about 1,500 years
what a find for geneticists to test DNA

There is an island in the Aegean Sea called Rhodes. It is the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands.   According to tradition, Jews came here to live in the 2nd century BCE.  They probably were able to live there as an isolated people until the 12th Century when Sephardi Jews were still escaping from the Spanish Inquisition and joined them, then numbering 500 Jews on the island.  By then, the Middle East had been taken over by the Ottoman Empire and Islam, which developed  with the advent of Mohammad's death in 632.  At that time, the Christian world was coming down on the heads of Jews even earlier than 1492 when the Spanish decree was that all Jews had to either convert or leave the country.

The Jews on Rhodes found themselves being governed by the rule of the Knights of St. John, a Christian ruling party, from 1309 to 1522.  It was headquartered in the Kingdom of JerusalemRhodes and Malta,
"After the fall of the Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1291 (Jerusalem itself had fallen in 1187), the Knights were confined to the County of Tripoli and, when Acre was captured in 1291, the order sought refuge in the Kingdom of Cyprus. Finding themselves becoming enmeshed in Cypriot politics, their Master, Guillaume de Villaret, created a plan of acquiring their own temporal domain, selecting Rhodes to be their new home, part of the Byzantine empire. His successor, Fulkes de Villaret, executed the plan, and on 15 August 1309, after over two years of campaigning, the island of Rhodes surrendered to the knights. "

By the end of this period, they were suffering for having suspected sympathy with the Turks.  In 1577, the Kahal Shalom Synagogue was built, now the oldest synagogue in Greece.

The Turks did take over and rule, which brought many Sephardi settlers and changed the composition of the community which was formerly under the Christian Greeks.

The Colossus of Rhodes is one of official Seven Ancient Wonders of the World
and was located on the Greek island of Rhodes. The statue depicted the Greek
God of the Sun, Helios, and was built to commemorate Rhodes’ victory over Cyprus. It is 98 feet tall, just a little shorter than the Statue of Liberty-111 feet tall.  .
Even on this remote island, in 1840 there was the accusation of a Jew committing a ritual murder, something that happened to Jews in the Middle Ages.   It was averted  through the intervention of Sir Moses Montefiore.

WWI came along and the Italians occupied the island from 1912 in an attempt to make Rhodes a center for the diffusion of an Italianized Jewish culture among the Jews of the Middle East, and in the Fascist period, a rabbinical seminary was even established.

Then in 1938 on the brink of WWII, the Italian anti-Semitic legislation led to a considerable exodus from the island mostly  going to Rhodesia and the Belgian Congo.  Benito Mussolini, the Italian dictator, had passed a series of anti-Semitic decrees that affected the Jews of Rhodes because the islands were then Italian.  Those that stayed sadly were deported to their death by the Germans in WWII and few lived out of a population of about 4,000.  They were all murdered on July 23, 1944 by the Nazis.

Of the people last on the island, they spoke Ladino, a mixture of Hebrew and Spanish.  The city of Rhodes had a Jewish quarter-or "La Juderia".  Now it's called the Square of the Jewish Martyrs or the Sea Horse Square as there is a fountain there on "La Calle Ancha Road (The Wide Street)".  There is a monument dedicated to the memory of the 1,604 Jews from Rhodes and the nearby smaller island of Kos.

This young Turkish consul to Rhodes, Muslim Selahattin Ülkümen.
Rhodes had a Jewish community of about 2,000  before the War
and Ülkümen saved many of them by issuing Turkish visas and passports even though it was against direct orders from Turkey. Two researchers, Gilbert and Nyombayire,  went back to Rhodes and interviewed
Ülkümen’s son as well as two Jewish refugees who were saved
 because of the Diplomat’s efforts.
During the war, in protest of Ülkümen’s assistance to the Jews of Rhodes, the Germans bombed the Turkish consulate killing his wife..

"As a part of the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival, Amanda Gurin of Atlanta went to “The Rescuers,” directed by Emmy-award winner Michael King. The documentary follows  the above researcher, a young Rwandan anti-genocide activist, Stephanie Nyombayire and a world-renowned Holocaust historian, Sir Martin Gilbert, as they scout Europe for descendents of the Righteous Diplomats. The trek took 35 days and took Nyombayire and Gilbert to 15 countries.  Ulkumen
was one of them.
This is the blessing in this story.  Some 40-50 Jews from Rhodes had Turkish citizenship and because of that were able to escape the Nazis through the intervention of the Turkish consul of the time, Selahattin Ulkumen, above.  At one time, almost half of the businesses, little shops, had belonged to the Jews of Rhodes.  Today only 5 buildings are owned by Jews who make up a handful of the Jews left in the island city, mostly now quite elderly, and just a few younger ones who have intermarried.  Only an elderly brother and sister are related to any of the original Jewish residents and they are living in the new city.

In 1956, Greek Jews were urged to move to Rhodes, so 20 Jewish families took up the offer and were able to be a part of a small but tightly knit and vibrant Jewish community.  By 1970, an exodus began and many young Jews left Rhodes for better educational and employment opportunities.  However, people do return who have family roots from the island.

Aaron A. had been living in Zimbabwe and was able to visit his ancestral home a year ago.  He now lives in Florida.  Vic visited Rhodes recently.  His father had lived there in 1938 and Vic had celebrated Yom Kippur with him then.  It was the last time Vic was able to see his father.  He recalled being with him, the close-knit community, the rich family life they had that was centered around the charming Jewish Quarter with its cobbled alleyways that led to the huge waterfront; the world for him that was.

Today, " Rhodes is known for its beach resorts, ancient ruins and structural remnants of its crusades-era occupation by the Knights of St. John. Rhodes City features the medieval Street of the Knights and the castle-like Palace of the Grand Masters, once a Turkish prison and now a museum. The city’s bars, clubs and cafes bustle during high season. It's quite the tourist attraction for nearby people.  People come here to celebrate the High Holidays who have family roots from the island.  Every Friday night in the summer they do have a minyan and hold services.  They come to hold weddings, bar and bat mitzvas with at least 100 attending and they come from Paris, Cape Town, England and Australia.  They even have built a museum on the island.  "Weather73°F (23°C), Wind W at 13 mph (21 km/h), 53% Humidity.  NIce!

Britain's Birth of Pakistan, Israel and Jordan

Nadene Goldfoot
King Abdullah (1882-1951) of Transjordan
During World War I, Abdullah of Saudi Arabia helped the British fight against the Germans and their friends, the  central powers group,  which consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey (Ottoman Empire) and Bulgaria.  Britain's friends were France, Russia, Italy, Japan, and (from 1917) the U.S.   The war lasted from 1914 to 1918.  10 million soldiers  and 7 million civilians died in this war.

He wanted a reward.  80% of the Promised Land to the Jews was eyed as his reward, so it was detached from the land under the Palestine Mandate and put under the rule of Abdullah in 1923.  "On April 18, 1946, independent Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan was formed and shortly admitted to the United Nations and the Arab League. In 1948 he annexed the eastern part of the land,  he called The West Bank   It was to have been a separate state according to the Brits, but he proclaimed it "The Kingdom of Jordan," in 1950 and he was its king. Great Britain and Pakistan were the only countries that recognized it, even though this quick annexation was done without a murmur but had angered the other Arab states.  They didn't like the fact that it had been given recognition.  Of course it was most shocking to the Jews.

This land was originally Israel and Judah, also called Judea and Samaria.  Samaria was simply the land surrounding Jerusalem, the original capital.  After the 1967 war started by the Arabs, Israel gained this land back as was originally promised because they had won the war.  This was the 3rd War the Arabs had started against Israel and the 3rd time caused the Arabs to lose land that wasn't theirs in the first place, that is if keeping one's word meant anything.  The Brits had been promise-breakers. Abdullah was assassinated in 1951 by the Mufti, Haj Amin el-Husseini.   Jordan was not a full member of the UN until December 14, 1955.

On August 14, 1947, Pakistan was born.  It was created out of India, another holding of Great Britain that was also given its independence at the same time. Britain was letting go of much of their land holdings. When this happened, 14 million people became refugees within a few months.  No agency was upset by the fact that there was a flight of 8 million Hindus from Pakistan and of 6 million Moslems leaving their homes in India.  The Indian and Pakistani leaders asked their people to stay where they were.  It was a 2-way traffic jam and bloody riots preceded the flights.  Both  poor countries, the Indian and Pakistani governments at once tried to give their refugees food and homes and had no outside help.  They used the homes given up by the refugees who had fled in the opposite directions.  It turned out to be an exchange of populations.  It took them years to finally get everyone settled.

There had been much fighting going on in India between the Muslims and the Hindus.  This creation was to end the hostilities.  The example of 2 different religions living in the same area and fighting should have been a preview to what has been going on in Israel.  After waiting for over 67 years, I can say now that the Palestinian Arabs have had no intention of creating their own state.  They simply didn't want Israel to exist.  They have been the worst  anti-Semites after the Nazis, who they admired and vice versa. There was a mutual love-fest going on between these two evil peoples.

Malala Yousafzai, 17 year old Pashto who won the Nobel Prize at age 17, youngest to do so.  She believes in education, even for girls. She was almost killed herself  for expecting an education.

The Pashtos " are  an important community in Pakistan, which has the largest Pashtun population, and constitute the second-largest ethnic group, having attained presidency there and high rankings in sports. DNA studies show that "the haplogroup R1a (Y-DNA) is found at a frequency of 51.02% among the Pashtun people.  Paragroup Q-M242 (xMEH2, xM378) (of Haplogroup Q-M242 (Y-DNA)) was found at 16.3% in Pashtuns. Haplogroup Q-M242 is also found at a frequency of 18% in Pashtuns in the Afghan capital of Kabul.  My Jewish male line; brother, father, grandfather who was from Telsiai, Lithuania, are all Q1b1a or designated several years ago as Q(M-242).  The new name for our Y haplogroup is now called Q-Y2200.
R1a has also been found in a line of Levites.  2005 study by Nebel et al., found a similar level of 11.5% of male Jewish Ashkenazim belonging to R1a1a (M17+), the dominant Y-chromosome haplogroup in Central and Eastern Europeans.

Several years ago I knew a Pashto who also had the Y haplotype of Q  who stopped conversing with me because I was also Israeli.  When we had talked, we discussed the history of the Pashtos, and it was all right then that I was Jewish, but the Israeli realization put an end to that connection.  Today's DNA studies are most interesting in showing a connection between them and Jews.  We Q1b1a Jews make up only 5% of the Jewish population in the world.

Israel's 10 Tribes were abducted by Assyrians when they attacked Israel in 722-721 BCE.  This led to their captivity all these years.  They live in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  ""Afghana" was said to be the  grandson of King Saul, the first king of Israel.

Many are thought to be from the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel. An accurate count remains elusive due to the lack of an official census in Afghanistan since 1979. Estimates of the number of Pashtun tribes and clans  of Afghanistan and Pakistan range from about 350 to over 400.  Their total population is thought to be about 50 million.

"One conflicting issue in the belief that the Pashtuns descend from the Israelites is that the Ten Lost Tribes were exiled by the ruler of Assyria, while Maghzan-e-Afghani says they were permitted by the ruler to go east to Afghanistan. This inconsistency can be explained by the fact that Persia acquired the lands of the ancient Assyrian Empire when it conquered the Empire of the Medes and Chaldean Babylonia, which had conquered Assyria decades earlier in 597 and 586 BCE.   No ancient author mentions such a transfer of Israelites further east, or no ancient extra-Biblical texts refer to the Ten Lost Tribes at all."  The Assyrians had taken away the best of the Jewish tribes.

Instead of fighting with Hindus, Pashtuns have been victims of the overwhelming majority of Islamist militant terrorism from  fellow Muslims. Pakistan alone has lost at least ten times more people to terrorism than the USA lost on 9/11. Pakistani soldiers killed fighting the militants also outnumber the total number of US and NATO troops killed in neighbouring Afghanistan. Now, the children of Pakistani soldiers have also died.  The massacre of 132 children at a military-run school in Peshawar has already led to an unprecedented backlash of public feeling in Pakistan against the terrorists."

Exactly 9 months later, on May 14, 1948 after Pakistan, Israel was born.  Pakistan had been part of the British Indian Empire, and Israel came about as a freed Palestine from the Ottoman Empire's clutches because they had lost World War I, and being a world war-Britain was granted the 30 year mandate to police the land until they left when the mandate ended,  and the Jews then would own it.  It was a 30 year promise, broken after a few months by giving away 80% of that very  Promised land to King Abdullah who created Trans-Jordan, and then changed the name simply to Jordan for the Jordan River that acted as a boundary.  Great Britain, for being a tiny island country, had a full plate to deal with.  That's because Germany, who had lost the war along with their partners, the Ottoman Turks, riled up again to cause World War II.

Haj Amin al Husseini  AKA The Mufti of Jerusalem,  plotting with Hitler to kill all Jews  In 1941, Haj Amin al-Husseini fled to Germany and met with Adolf HitlerHeinrich HimmlerJoachim Von Ribbentrop and other Nazi leaders. He wanted to persuade them to extend the Nazis’ anti-Jewish program to the Arab world.
This started when the Germans invaded Poland on September 1, 1939.  Two days later, Britain and France were in the war. Fighting with them were  the U.S., the Soviet Union, and China.   This broke out in the USA later when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.  Japan and China were at war with each other in 1937.  They attacked the USA fleet because they didn't want the same fate that China had with the West.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signing Declaration of War against Germany
Then Germany  declared war on the USA.  The USA declared war on Germany on December 11, 1941 and signed papers to that effect on January 3, 1942.  Germany now wanted to exterminate all the Jews in the whole world.  A large population of Jews lived in Poland.    WWII lasted from September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945;  6 years and 1 day.  6 million Jews had been murdered.

It seems that everyone was always ready to fight everyone else.  "World War II was the deadliest conflict ihuman history. 60 million people died in this war.  World War II altered the political alignment and social structure of the world."
