Syria-Palaestina, How It Got the Name of Palestine

Nadene Goldfoot

Herodotus, b: 484 BCE in

HalicarnassusCaria (modern-day BodrumTurkey
When people talked about "Palestine,"  what were they talking about?

From the time of Herodotus, Greeks had been calling the Jewish Homeland "Syria-Palaestina" or as we called it, Palestine from the Philistines, enemies of the Jewish people such as King Saul and King David.  "The first clear use of the term Palestine to refer to the entire area between Phoenicia and Egypt was in 5th century BC E Ancient Greecewhen Herodotus wrote of a "district of Syria, called Palaistinê" in The Histories, which included the Judean mountains and the Jordan Rift Valley In the treatise Meteorology .

The Philistines had been a thorn in the side of the family of Abraham ever since the first period.  They came in waves.   They believed in multiple gods, and Dagon, seen in the form of statue, was the leading one. Others were Astarte and Baal.  The Canaanites of the land were using their gods as well.   Canaanite religion was polytheistic, and in some cases monolatristic. Dagon was also their god.  "
  • Dagon, god of crop fertility and grain, father of Ba'al Hadad

1. Pre-patriarchal period and settled south of Beersheba in Gerar where they conflicted with Abraham and Isaac.   Could have been slightly different from the following Philistines that entered later.
Rameses II
2. Second period:  They came from Crete (Greek island, probably the biblical Caphtor) after being repulsed from Egypt by Rameses II in 1194 BCE.  They seized the southern coastal area of Palestine where they founded 5 principalities of 1. Gaza, 2. Ascalon (Ashkelon) , 3, Ashdod, 4. Ekron, 5. Gath of which Achish was king, friend of David.  By nature, they were a fighting people.  They dominated parts of Judah in the period of the Judges.  King Saul at first won battles but was ultimately defeated.  King David ended their era of domination and overran Philistia. (Read Samuel I.)

Note: It was in the ancient Egyptian city of Raameses in the Nile Delta where Jacob and his family settled, told in Gen. 47:11, 27.  Their descendants were compelled to build storehouses for the Egyptian king.  Raameses was the point of departure for the Exodus.

Moses and Ten Commandments (5 things to do and 5 things not to do.)
1-5: one G-d, no other G-ds, G-d name sacred, Shabbat-day of rest; honor parents
6-10: not to murder, commit adultery, steal, bear false witness,  nor covet anything.
Imagine what people were like before this list of 10 rules to follow.
Note: Moses led the Exodus from Egypt at age 80 for 40 years, about from 1311 BCE to 1271 BCE and so entered Canaan in 1271 BCE, superceding the 2nd wave of Philistines by some 77 years by my math.  Philistines were not native Canaanites, but had been a Mediterranean people, thought to have originated from Asia Minor and Greek localities.

3. Third period: Persian and Greek Periods; foreign settlers from the Mediterranean islands, overran the Philistine districts.

Herod, selected by the Romans to be King of Judea
4. Fourth Roman Period from 63 BCE. Roman invaded and took Syria.  " Herod the Great, Antipater's son, was designated "King of the Jews" by the Roman Senate in 40 BCE: "  So Roman soldiers were in the city of Jerusalem and thereabouts.  Judea had been overcome by Rome for a good 130 years before it fell to them in 70 CE.  That's at least 5 generations of Jews living under oppression.  They could only talk about their own state of Judea in their great great grandfather's days.  It would be like Jews in 1950 talking about their great great grandparents of 1820.  Note how time had changed between just 130 years!  From covered wagons to automobiles and planes for us in this time change, but for our biblical ancestors, not much could have changed except their thinking.

From 6 CE, Rome had become the administrators of Judea, Samaria and Idumea.  .

Judah's " revenue was of little importance to the Roman treasury, but it controlled the land and coastal sea routes to the bread basket Egypt and was a border province against the Parthian Empire because of the Jewish connections to Babylonia (since the Babylonian exile). The capital was at Caesarea (Maritima), not Jerusalem."

Roman Emperor Hadrian (117-138 CE) gave the name officially to the former land of Judah in 135 CE after fighting General Bar Kokhba for 3 years who had re-taken Jerusalem.  He did this out of anger to get even with the Jews.  He also renamed Jerusalem as Aelia Capitolina. This emperor decided to Hellenize the land and had outlawed circumcision amongst other things,  which brought on the rebellion of the Jewish General (Aluf) Bar Kokhba and the war from 132-135.  After winning against the Jews, he received the title of Imperator.  Judea was made a consular province called SYRIA-PALAESTINA.  .  The ruins of Jerusalem were re-built into a pagan city and a statue of Hadrian was erected on the site of THE HOLY OF HOLIES , the inner sanctum which was the most sacred place in the temple, meant only for Aaron and following Cohen  priests.

1920 Palestine
A state of Palestine?  Never.  At the time of the end of World War I in 1917, the Ottoman Empire, who fought against the allies with the Germans, were the losers, and thus lost all their land to the allies.  This was a WORLD-WIDE WAR, and the allies had already decided to give this land to the Jews who had been in meetings with them about it.  Most of the land had no value to anyone.  It was hot there, and either swampy, full of weeds, or a dry desert.  Not many people lived there.  There were Jews whose ancestors had never left after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE.  Then there were more recent Jews who had come mainly from Russia in the 1880s and on, who were building up the land and creating Tel Aviv.   There were Bedouins riding camels and horses, the Princes of the desert, who were mainly raiders of others, and only a few bedraggled landowners who had had a hard existence with the Ottoman Empire representatives who picked up tax money from them.

Mehmed VI, last Sultan of Ottoman Empire
from 1918 to 1922
Who were Palestinians?  From the end of WWI to May 14, 1948 when Israel was announced as being born, both Jews and Arabs were Palestinians.  Jews had lost Judea and Arabs had lost nothing but the Ottoman Empire's holdings, and they were only subjects of the Ottoman Empire.  It was the Turks who were working for the Empire and had been for the past 400 years.  .

Culture War in Sweden Due to Muslim Refugees

Damascus, Syria, where many Syrians have left for Sweden
Syrians walking through Denmark on their way to Sweden, 2015
The rules have changed from 2014 for Muslims to find refuge in Sweden.  Back then, you needed  around $5,000 to get a Visa, so only the wealthy could enter.  At least that's what my Syrian friend had found out, who had moved to Egypt with his family after the Syrian Civil War had started.  A few exploding bombs outside his home caused them to move to Egypt who stood by with open arms.  Morsi had a selfish reason for accepting his Syrian cousins.  They would then be potential voters for him, and he wanted to be President.  At the time he was head of the Muslim Brotherhood, but that wasn't enough for him.  When he was finally taken down by General Sisi, the Syrians were sent back to Syria as the country couldn't afford them anymore.  My friend had to leave, but life was getting hard for him there, anyway.

He was an Americanized college-educated Syrian.  His home was as American as he could make it, and he admired anything American.  He was a very open minded person who loved to debate.  His American home has been totally destroyed and so was his father's home.  Luckily he found refuge in Damascus, his own home  town, which is much better of than northern cities.  But at one time, he would have loved to get to Sweden, my maternal grandmother's home that she left in 1890.

Malmo, in southern part of Sweden,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jAkPo5Y42k
Where Sweden has been taking in Muslims for many years now, even to the point of where they have been nasty to Jewish refugees who came during WWII seeking refuge and finding it.  The abuse in Malmo  had been so bad that many Jews have been forced out and have moved to Israel. Maybe that's because Malmo has had a mayor who was from Eastern Europe himself and rather anti-Semitic.  He looked the other way and did very little to protect the Jews from attacks.

Sweden now grants blanket asylum to Syrians.  Sweden has become the first European Union country to announce it will give asylum to all Syrian refugees who apply as of 2013.
From 2012 to 2013, they took in 14,700 refugees from Syria.
Syria's population was 22,505,000 in 2011.
Damascus's population in 2009 was 1.711 million.
The largest city in Syria was Aleppo.
Aleppo's population was recorded at 2,132,000 in 2004, although it has dropped dramatically since, given the civil war and millions fleeing the country. While 5.2 million refugees were expected to be registered as refugees by the end of 2014, another 6.5 million were internally displaced by December 2014.   2016, Syria's population has dropped to 18,563, 595.

The Scandinavian country has acquired a reputation among Syrian refugees as a welcoming haven, and it is the biggest host country for Syrians outside the Middle East. Sweden now routinely offers permanent residency to Syrian refugees.

Sweden's population grew from 9 million to 9.5 million in the years 2004-2012, mainly due to immigration from "countries like Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia".  Lately it has been Syrians.

There has been a migrant invasion into Sweden.  Last year, 9,000 migrants came each week starting in the fall.  So far this year, 600 to 700 have been arriving each week.  The decrease is because more are applying for asylum in the EU, of which Sweden is a part of.  The Märsta arrival centre - or establishments like this,  are the first port of call for Syrian refugees in Sweden.  The young staff "aim to process their applications as quickly as possible so they can be bussed off to proper accommodation in towns across Sweden.

The Swedes have a border control set up but have a 2 weeks lapse when it isn't guarded, and this year it is scheduled for July 4th -17th.  This coincides with Sweden's vacation period.  Many are afraid that tens of thousands of migrants will seize the opportunity to enter Sweden during this time.  The law has been that if they are not from a Schengen or or EU Country, they need a Visa to enter.  In order to get a Visa, you have to be in  the country you are living in and get the Visa from Sweden's state department.  You also need a passport from your country-supposedly from Syria to travel.  Information on the Swedish Embassy website says: " It is not possible for Syrian nationals to seek asylum through Swedish Embassies or Diplomatic Missions abroad."  Problems have resulted from an influx of Muslim refugees.

Independent Swedish women
A Swedish woman in Stockholm was gang-raped by  North Africans, and
the torture went on for hours.
Muslims have a different concept of honor than the Swedes do.  1,100 young students were interviewed in Stockholm with 90% of respondents being Muslims and this confirmed the findings of earlier statistics in 2005---in that immigrant youths live in a different world from the Swedish students.  83% of girls cannot have male friends, and 62% of the boys are not allowed to have female friends.  51% have resorted to having secret relationships, 30% cannot date a person of a different ethnicity, and 65% said that they parents are in the act of working on arranged marriages for them.  The patriarchal structure of the family is very different from the Swedes.  Swedes are proud of all having equal rights, and this collides with what they have fought for in their society.

46% of Swedish women feel unsafe when they go out alone at night, and most stay in contact with a friend or relative when they do this for safety sake.

A Lithuanian immigrant boy, 15 year old Arminas Pileckas,  was murdered by a Syrian Muslim refugee who was only 14 years old.  The reason shows the cultural differences.  Arminas tried to protect a girl in his class from the Syrian's unwanted sexual advances, so the Syrian was mad about it and stabbed the Lithuanian to death.  The Syrian's father defended his son by telling the police that Arminas had interferred with his son's sexual advances and then he had to see Arminas in school every day which upset him very much.  He blamed the SCHOOL for doing nothing to help him or to RESTORE HIS HONOR.    The result is that the Syrian will not be charged with murder or penalized in any way.

Now, this one case wouldn't be so bad, but other things are happening.  Since the refugees have arrived, rape cases have gone up.  After several attacks happened on women in Ostersund, police announced that women are not safe outdoors after dark.  Since February 20th, 8 women were assaulted or raped in town.

Sweden is now called the rape capitol of the West and is the 2nd highest in the world. the rapes going on are by the new immigrants.   1 in 4 women will be raped. Sexual assaults have increased 500%.  South Africa has the highest and  is 6 times higher than the USA.   Stockholm is now from 1/5 to 1/4th Muslim.  Sweden is losing equality for women.  In 2013,  a pregnant Muslim woman was attacked by by a Swedish man for wearing a scarf, so the Swedish women took pictures of themselves covering their hair with scarves to retaliate.  "Police spokesman Ulf Hoffman said an unknown assailant had attacked the pregnant woman in the suburb of Farsta on Friday by banging her head against a car.

I noticed problems starting in Malmo between Muslims and WWII Jewish immigrants who had gone to Sweden after the war.  After being there for many years, they found themselves being attacked by the new Muslim refugees.  It didn't help to have the mayor of the town also being a transport and not a native Swede, since he was European and didn't stop the attacks.  They got so bad that the younger Jewish generation started moving and making aliyah to Israel.  I have noted this going on for several years since I have a tie to Sweden.  My maternal grandmother came from Lumsheden.  She immigrated to the states in 1888, April 27th.

40% of Europeans Becoming Anti-Semitic Once Again

Nadene Goldfoot
Syrians entering Europe who were fighters, possibly now ISIS members.  This is the fear of seeing single males coming through.

40% of Europeans now hold  anti-Semitic views such as they are behaving like Nazis.  This comes from the increase in their Muslim population of late due to the rise of radical Islam, the refugee crisis, BDS and the rise of the extreme political right in their politics.  It's led to the growth of gated communities for Jews for protection purposes.     "German Chancellor Angela Merkel says anti-Semitism is “more widespread” in Germany than some believe and that action is needed to “deal with it – especially among young people… from countries where hatred of Israel and the hatred of Jews is widespread.”
Other Muslim refugees come by boat and seem to be safe. "The desire for heightened caution in the wake of a terrorist attack is understandable, but the rhetoric from those who think it's impossible to safely take in 10,000 Syrian refugees, out of the more than 4 million who have left their country, goes beyond a simple call for vigilance."  Now we see that even taking in Syrians brings about a growth of anti-Semitism with them.

Refugees blocked in Turkey on the way to Europe
Back to 1933 and the rise of anti-Semitism in Germany.  This was after World War I but was taking place after the Balfour Doctrine when the plans for Israel were now on the table with the League of Nations.

Husseini and Hitler, 1941 Meeting to talk about the Jews
We saw Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Sherif of Jerusalem, who I call the big fish in the little pond, instigated riots with the Muslims in Jerusalem in 1929 and thereon.  This was also the time of an economic crash with the stock market in the USA which probably affected Europe as well.  Wasn't this said to be the time Germans had to take a wheelbarrow full of paper money to buy a loaf of bread?

Muslims Marching to Austria
Now the Europeans in their brilliant way are blaming the Jews for defending themselves when the Muslims attack them to kill.  The Europeans couldn't stop the Nazis who attacked them and had to rely on the USA to bring about an end of WWII.

Jewish school, class pre-war picture from Karlsruhe, Germany
Germany had lost 3,500,000 soldiers and  700,000 civilians with a total of 4,200,000 deaths from WWII.
The Axis altogether lost 8,268,000 people.  This included Germany, Japan, Romania, Hungary, Italy, Austria and Finland.  "According to the census of June 16, 1933, the Jewish population of Germany, including the Saar region (which at that time was still under the administration of the League of Nations), was approximately 505,000 people out of a total population of 67 million, or somewhat less than 0.75 percent."  Yet Hitler had the audacity to blame all their problems on the Jews, who weren't even 1% of their population!

USA Soldiers
The Allies lost 39,963,700 people from 24 different countries.  Out of this number, the USA and Canada were not attacked so there were no civilian deaths.  They lost 400,000 soldiers.  Canada lost 37,000 soldiers.

It must not be forgotten that the Jews were almost exterminated by the murder of 6,000,000 (6 million).  Now the Europeans have turned around and are calling Israelis Nazis?  For shame!  Ignorance knows no barriers, except through education!

There was no Israel when the Holocaust occurred from 1939 to 1945.  Israel came about from the growth of anti-Semitism in Russia with constant pogroms against Jews, and from Easter pageants held against Jews.  It came from a mindset of the Europeans that held that Jews were a lower form of people, even when they excelled.  It came from jealousy and avarice and the desire for power..

Muslims and Jews have different beliefs even though they both believe in one G-d and both live in the Middle East.  Jews are not eager to die.  They hold onto life as much as humanely possible.  Muslims, on the other hand, have the religious belief in that if they die as martyrs for their religion, they will gain immediate rewards including 72 virgins for eternity.  They have been putting Jews in a bad light by dying eagerly for the cause!

Jews are holding onto Israel with all their might that their 6 million population of today can bring forth.  They lost their Israel twice; once in 722 BCE to the Assyrians when the original Israel was attacked and 10 of the 12 tribes were kidnapped.  It happened again to the southern part of Israel named Judah for the remaining tribe who lived there in 70 CE.  This is when Rome had occupied Jerusalem and then decided to burn the city and the Temple down.

Christians have had their times of being reborn again Christians.  Well, we are having our rebirth that finally happened after 2,000 years of patiently waiting for the right time, and here we are-like it or not!  Israel has done more good by creating inventions in medicine and other technologies since 1948 than any European country has  since that same period that have benefited the world.

And what have the Muslims contributed?  Nada.  Nothing.  Only tunnels and bombs used against Israel.  While they try to kill off the Jews, the Jews patch up their people who were in harm's way.  At the same time, there have been Muslims who were eager to die for their cause and put themselves in harms way-either that or their leaders did the dastardly deed.

When Israel was created in 1948, they had a population of 650,000 Jews.  Today they have 6 million for their  one Jewish state.  The Muslims, on the other hand, have had 48 Muslim majority states in the world.  Of course, they have now lost Syria and Iraq to IS as their new caliphate, but that is their own fault.  This is also not counting any new Palestine!  With a population that is killing each other, the Muslim population in the world is about 1.6 BILLION.  This is against 6 MILLION Jews and 1.7 MILLION MUSLIMS who are Israelis.

Israel is not just another state in the world.  It is the ONLY JEWISH STATE and must keep their population to reflect this.  You don't have to be a mathematician to understand this.   It was created to be the haven for Jews suffering from anti-Semitism in the world.  It looks like there is no end to this problem with what is happening to Europe today with 40% of the population being anti-Semitic.

Back in August of 2013, I tried to bring in one Syrian male, age 32 and single, who had a Jewish birth mother and Muslim father and who was raised in a Muslim home.  I could have stood on my head, but nothing I could do could bring this young man into the USA due to religious persecution being he was considered to be Jewish by his family.  He had to remain a secret Jew like the Sephardic Spanish Jews of 1492.  At the time, our State Department had announced that they would admit 2,000 Syrian refugees.  I don't know how they were selected, but no one needed to get out more than this young man who wanted to practice his Judaism and not be a Muslim.  Even Senator Wyden gave me no hope of ever getting him out unless he was a special atomic scientist or something similar.  At this time, a friend, a female friend at that, could not get a male Syrian out and into the USA.  Now the floodgates have been opened, at least in Europe.  At the time, it was not that hard to get into Great Britain, however.  All it ever took was money.

Now, 10,000 refugees will be entering the USA.  " The first transport of Muslim so-called “refugees” just arrived in New Orleans recently and will be resettled in Louisiana and 180 other American communities. " " fact, our own DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson actually said “we don’t know a whole lot” about Syrian refugees coming into America, and that DHS has “no active protocol” for properly screening them." "Jeh Charles Johnson (born September 11, 1957) is an American civil and criminal trial lawyer, and the current United States Secretary of Homeland Security. He was the General Counsel of the Department of Defense from 2009 to 2012 during the first Obama Administration."

Update: 1:10pm--Up to date facts about the refugees arriving in New Orleans and the 180 other cities are not online.  A lot of bogus information about it is online.  Whether or not they have arrived and have been vetted is not known.  This vetting process has been said to take 2 years, and certainly if they have just arrived, they have not been vetted.  As to whether or not this is even possible to do will be amazing since all of their government records will have been lost.  I doubt if anyone can be vetted properly.

The 10,000 Syrian refugees are first flown to the United States, according to the French news wire Agence France-Presse, with the State Department paying the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for the airfare. "

Update: 10:07pm:  Fact: . Since the conflict in Syria began in Fiscal Year 2011, the United States has admitted just over 2,200 Syrian refugees. In Fiscal Year 2016, the Administration remains committed to its goal of resettling at least 10,000 Syrian refugees in the United States.
http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2015/11/250005.htm.   This means it has yet to happen in this year.
9:53am 1/27/16   I just verified this with the rep in Sen. Wyden's office who handles refugee questions.  Refugees have been coming into the USA but only after vetting which has sometimes taken as long as 3 years.  For some it will be impossible to enter if vetting can't occur.

Will my friend be among them?  I doubt it.The last thing he ever wanted to have happen to him was to be resettled for life in a refugee camp.  How these 10,000 will be handled should be different than what has happened in refugee camps in Jordan where they do live in camps.

What can be done about the 40% of Europeans that are admitting anti-Semitic feelings?  Education.  Education and more education.  Ignorance is not bliss.  It's leading to the deaths of innocents.  Muslims have to undertake some education about Jews and Israel.  They've been so brainwashed, it's almost impossible to change their hearts and minds.  It would help immensely if Europeans were better educated too, so they could combat the false allegations when they are confronted with them.  It all starts in the home with the little children.

Letter to UN: The Golan Heights and Why Syria Must Not Get Them Back

Nadene Goldfoot
Syrian missiles lined up and ready to be aimed at Israel

When Syria held the Golan Heights, 1,200 sq km,  they managed to keep it relatively quiet since 1974 when they realized that Israel's artillery range could reach Damascus.  What Syria had done was  to support many terrorist groups that try to attack Israel from Lebanon--and occasionally from Syria.  Now that they have the problem of their own people turning against the Syrian government as well as ISIS taking the northern part of Syria their missiles could fall into either hands and thus be turned against Israel.

The groups Syria  had been backing were the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP);  the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP);  Hezbollah and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC).  I might say that Syria's backing of such groups as led to her near demise of today's situation.  In trying to destroy Israel, Syria is about to be entirely destroyed, for here is an even more evil and hateful group-ISIS, taking most of the country.  The only place left Assad is holding onto that matters is Damascus.

Then there was an indication that Syria might allow terrorists such as ISIS to escalate the situation.  In 1991, DFLP terrorists from Syria attacked an Israeli border post on Mt. Hermon, killing an Israeli soldier.  Another raid just like that one happened 2 months later in September 1991.  Several DFLP terrorists were then killed.

About 60 miles away in Western Golan where it is an easy ride to Haifa and Acre, lies Israel's industrial heartland.  The Golan Heights rises from 400 to 1700 feet in the western section which borders on pre-1967 Israel.  It overlooks the Huleh Valley, Israel's agricultural area.  If the Golan is controlled by hostile neighbor, Syria, it can again become a strategic nightmare for Israel.  I feel that is what the UN is actually aiming for.

Before 1967 and the War, Israel's agricultural towns in the Galilee came under fire from the Golan.  The Golan is high and could just rain down bombs.  Counter battery fires were limited for Israel by the lack of observation from the Huleh Valley.  Air attacks were degraded by Syrian positions that could dig in with strong overhead cover.  A ground attack against the position would need major forces with risks of high casualties.  All this could cause severe political repercussions in the UN!  You of course will blame Israel for their own defense.

In 1967 when Israel was attacked from the Golan, it suffered 115 dead, the same number of Americans killed during Operation Desert Storm.

In 1992, Syria had 300,000 troops--75% of its army station on the Israeli front near the Golan Heights.  We see that Assad still has control over the heads of Arab states voting on this in the UN, for it's he that dreams of getting the Golan Heights back.

IDF guarding the Golan Heights-January 2015
If Israel gave the Golan back to a hostile Syria, it would show that the UN favors Assad and that he should stay in power.  It would jeapardize Israel's early-warning system against a surprise attack.  Israel has radars on Mt. Hermon which is the highest point in the Golan.  They would then lose almost all their strategic importance.

As from past experience, nothing Israel would offer to do today would help Syria or Assad.  One has to remember that ISIS is planning on hitting Assad and taking over all the area.  Coming out with such a resolution at this point in time is irresponsible and only shows your determination to also destroy Israel.

Syria's President still, Hafez Assad, has indicated no change to go beyond agreeing to a far more limited "non-belligerency" deal with Israel.   He could not be trusted, anyway.   Has Assad kept his word in the Middle East?  He has attacked his own cities and has gassed his own people.  He has no limit on his degree of punishing people.

No.  Israel needs to retain military control over the Golan Heights in order for the people there and Israel to enjoy peace.  On December 114, 1981, Israel passed a statute enacted by the Knesset that extended Israeli civilian law and administration to the people of the Golan which replaced military authority that had ruled from 1967.

Syria went on for 14 years to refuse to negotiate a treaty of peace.  Professor Julius Stone of Hastings College of the Law wrote the following for the Knesset.
"There is no rule of international law which requires a lawful military occupant, in this situation, to wait forever before making control and government of the territory permanent.  ....Many international lawyers have wondered, indeed, at the patience which led Israel to wait as long as she did."
In January of 2015, "

"Israeli security forces return fire after two rockets allegedly fired from Syria hit region that has become flash point.   Tensions have soared along the ceasefire line since a January 18 air strike attributed to Israel killed six Hezbollah fighters and an Iranian general near Quneitra in Syria.

In August, five rockets fired from Syria hit the Israeli-occupied sector of the Golan Heights and, in July, Israel shelled Syrian army positions when a rocket struck its territory."

On Sunday, September  27, 2015 " Israel struck Syrian army targets on the Golan Heights and Israel said it was retaliating for cross-border rocket fire from the Syrian War next door."   Now we have the UN coming up with returning the land to a non-existent country, Syria who has not been able to keep its land from ISIS.

Arabs and How They Have Treated Jews Throughout History

Nadene Goldfoot
King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia today

Arabs, from their very name, are from Arabia, not Palestine.  Palestinian Arabs, therefore, are not native to the present day Gaza and Judea and Samaria.  They wandered there throughout the centuries to arrive and live all over the Middle East.  Gaza had long ago been an Egyptian expedition base in the 15th to 13th centuries BCE.   and then was captured by the Philistines.  The Temple of Dagon was there.  That was an ancient Semitic deity whose cult was adopted by the Philistines when they entered Canaan.  Dagon was an important god in the Ugaritic belief in many gods.  He was a god of the soil and plant-growth and widely worshipped in the Middle Eastern countries.

Judea and Samaria were part of Israel, the only Jewish land in the world created by Moses who led the Israelites there as commanded by G-d. On the map above, Jordan was a part of Israel.   Moses died just outside the land in about 1271 BCE and Joshua took over getting the people on the land.  The first king was Saul in the 11th century BCE, son of Kish of the tribe of Benjamin.  Judah was the southern part of Israel and Samaria was the land around the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel, founded in 880 BCE by King Omri on a hill bought from Shemer. They had to choose a new capital since Jerusalem, the original capital of Israel went to the Jews of Judah.   Samaria, the city was  NW of Shechem (Nablus today).  The city was on 25 acres and is all referred to now as Samaria.

It fell in 721 BCE to the Assyrians who resettled it with Cutheans, the Kutim,  who mixed in with the population and were the ancestors of the Samaritans.  According to records, "The emergence of the Samaritans as an ethnic and religious community distinct from other Levant peoples appears to have occurred at some point after the Assyrian conquest of the Israelite Kingdom of Israel in approximately 721 BCE. The records of Sargon II of Assyria indicate that he deported 27,290 inhabitants of the former kingdom. Then, "The Talmud accounts for a people called "Cuthim" on a number of occasions, mentioning their arrival by the hands of the Assyrians."  So this was another exchange of populations; those taken out and those brought in to replace them.

Arabs are also a Semitic people like the Jews.  Their home had been the Arabian peninsula and other regions close by.  After Mohammad's birth and death in 632 CE/AD, they were part of the hoard or very well could have been THE hoard that burst forth from their homeland for the reason to conquer the greater part of the then civilized world.

They speak Arabic which just happens to be a cognate to Hebrew and forms a branch of the Semitic languages.  They say Salaam whereas Jews say Shalom, a greeting that means peace, or hello or goodbye.

Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia
Our Tanakh (Bible) and Talmudic literature does mention the Arabs and their homeland.  At the time of our 2nd Temple before 70 CE, it is possible that there were some Arabs living in Israel.  Our Temple,  built by King Solomon (961 BCE-920 BCE) , was destroyed in 586 BCE by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia.  It was rebuilt  from 538 to 515 BCE during the period of Simon the Just, Judah the Maccabee, Simon the Hasmonean, and King Herod.  Then the Romans destroyed it in 70 CE.

                                                                      Descendants of Eber

1   Eber (descendant of Shem) Shem was one of 3 sons of Noah
.     2        Peleg-ancestor of Abraham
.     2        Joktan ancestor of the Arabs
According to Genesis 10, Eber was the forefather of Abraham as well as of Joktan, the ancestor of the southern Arabs.  Several Arab tribes are also enumerated among the descendants of Abraham.

Ishmaelites buying Joseph, son of  Jacob by Rachel
The Arabs themselves trace their origin to Ishmael, the first son of Abraham by Hagar, the Egyptian handmaiden and former Egyptian princess of Abraham's wife, Sarah.  Sarah also happened to be Abraham's niece.  Sarah later gave birth to her first child, Isaac, and because of problems raising the 2 boys and bad feelings between the 2 women, Hagar and  son Ishmael left the family group at Sarah's insistence because she felt that Hagar was trying to usurp her position as wife and take over Abraham entirely.

Egyptians were not Arabs, but Arabs invaded Egypt in 640 CE.  From there on the  population may have blended somewhat.  Jews had lived there as well.  During Philo's days from 25 BCE to 50 CE , 1,000,000 Jews lived there with the most in Alexandria.  Philo was a Jewish philosopher living in Egypt.

Jewish tribes were found living in Arabia by the 1st century CE, long after The Assyrian conquest of Israel in 721 BCE and then the Babylonian conquest of 597-586 BCE.  It's possible they were so far away from Israel through these conquests when Jews were taken as prisoners to the land of the conquerors. The 10 tribes of Israel were taken  by Assyria.  The Babylonian conquest took Jews to Babylonia.  Perhaps some escaped at either time to wind up in Arabia, which would have been far south and a little east of their homeland.

Many Jews were expelled from northern Arabia shortly after the rise of Islam because they refused to convert-and Arabs were on a strong convert or die bent.  The Jews in southern Arabia continued to live in considerable numbers until recent times.  Medina was a large city where Jews lived and met many Arabs including Mohammad.  Several whole Jewish tribes had been forced to convert or die this way.

The Islamic conquests extended to many countries with ancient Jewish communities.  On several occasions, the Arabs were looked upon as better overlords than the people of these European countries, so were welcomed by the Jews who even helped them in conquest and occupation as life under them was better.   This happened in  Palestine,  Syria (Aram) . and Spain.   Palestine received its name from the Romans who had taken Judah and destroyed the 2nd Temple in 70 CE.

Syria was never a homogeneous state.  The coast had Phoenicians living there.  In the 8th century it was overrun by the Assyrians, too.  The Jews living there then suffered from the Greeks who had taken it.   When the Arabs conquered Syria in 634, life was better for the Jews living there.  Aleppo had in the 12th century, 5,000 Jews;  Damascus had 3,000, and Palmyra 2,000.  After 1492, more Jews lived in Syria who came from the Spanish Catholic Inquisition.  WWII caused an immigration of 30,000 Syrian Jews to dwindle down to 14,000 by 1947.

Haj Amin al-Husseini
WWII also saw the affinity that Nazi Germany had for Arabs. Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Sherif of Jerusalem known as the Grand Mufti, visited Hitler in Germany to talk him into killing European Jews.  He didn't want any in Palestine.  It was a mutual attraction between Husseini and many other Arabs with Nazis and vice- versa.  That seems to be the beginning seeds of bad blood between many  Arabs and Iranians and the Jews.

Bashar al-Assad
In Syria, an Alawite family of Bashar al-Assad's father, Hafez al- Assad,  came down hard on the Jews and kept them confined in a ghetto.  He followed suit. The Alawites "are a religious group, centred in Syria, who follow a very highly contested and controversial branch of the Twelver school of Shia Islam.  The Jews of Syria  were finally rescued and taken out of  Syria by Judith Feld Carr, a Canadian musician and mother, who with her husband,  was actually buying Jews from Assad over 28 years and getting them out of Syria.  She started her humane project in about 1973.  The Alawites are a minority in Syria, populated more with people following Sunni Islam.  As we have seen, the Alawites rule with an iron hand.

The Arab conquerors usually treated the Jews well and assured them of protection and freedom of religion as long as they paid the tax for doing it, called the poll tax.  This was written up in the Pact of Omar.  The Jews, like all the other non-Moslems, were called Dhimmis, or 2nd class citizens, and were subject to certain restrictions.  Outright persecutions happened not infrequently, especially in countries under sectarian rule, but in general, their position in the Arab world during the Middle Ages was actually better than in Christian Europe.

The surprising thing is that Jews sometimes were given a high governmental office in Spain and Fatimid Egypt.  In Spain, Jewish life under Arab rule was very good in the cultural field.  On the other hand, medieval conditions dominated the Arab world after Europe went into their age of Enlightenment, so Europe supposedly improved and uplifted themselves.  Under western European influence, conditions for Jews greatly improved in most place, but not in Yemen in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Then we see that the position of the Jews was badly affected by the anti-European attitudes and rising nationalism of the past generation.  The creation of the Jewish State of Israel in 1948 caused Jews to be expelled from Arab lands.  At the same time, Palestinian Arab leaders told their people to leave the newly announced Israel so that they could attack and take it over, which didn't work out for them.  There was an exchange of people from the land, coming into and leaving.

During 1967 During the Six Day War of Arabs attacking the Jews of Israel, there were 700,000 Arabs living in Israel.  About another million came under Israeli administration as a result of Israel winning the war-standing up against the attack.

Former Shah of Iran before Ayatollas

Ayatollah of Iran-All Powerful
Iranians are not Arabs. Called Persians till only a few years ago, Persia met Jews when the Babylonian Empire by Cyrus in 538 BCE attacked Judah and carted away its best of the population.  Jews lived there and can be read about in the Book of Esther.  However, Iran today is of the Shi'a sect of Islam while Arabs are of the Sunni sect-like a difference of Protestants and Catholics.

They also have the Salafist sect now seen by the conquesting IS, who are radicals.  IS has taken much of Syria and Iraq and of course hates and will kill Jews either through planning or accident.  They are reliving the ancient days of Islam in their planning to take over the Middle East.
