The Jews of South Africa

Nadene Goldfoot
Johannesburg, South Africa; only the flag tells me this is not a picture of the USA.
The flag of South Africa was adopted on 27 April 1994, at the beginning of South Africa's 1994 general election, to replace the flag that had been used since 1928. The new national flag  was chosen to represent the new democracy.
Jews went to South Africa during the early 19th century. By 1992 they had a population of 120,000 Jews in South Africa. By July 2014, the core Jewish population was 70,000.  The expanded population was from 80,000 to 92,000 Jews.   The first synagogue built there was organized in Capetown in 1841.  Many of the Jewish settlers were traders and peddlers, traveling among the Boer farmers.  Later, they tended to move to towns.  Many Jews emigrated  to South Africa, including a number from Eastern Europe after gold was discovered toward the end of the 19th century.

Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein at a Nelson Mandela Memorial Ceremony.
Despite vicious anti-Semitic rhetoric going on, he attended.  Mandela was very anti-Semitic.
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist, who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. In September 1998, Mandela was appointed Secretary-General of the Non-Aligned Movement, who held their annual conference in Durban. He used the event to criticise the "narrow, chauvinistic interests" of the Israeli government in stalling negotiations to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  Notice, he put all the blame on Israel and not the Palestinians ruled by Arafat who would not make peace under any conditions offered.   Mandela faced  criticism from the West for his government's trade links to Syria, Cuba, and Libya,  and for his personal friendships with Fidel Castro and Muammar Gaddafi.  Now we see why he was against Israel and for the Arabs.
Johannesburg became the main center of Jewish settlement.  In South Africa, Jews enjoyed political equality in Cape Colony and Natal.  They had it in the Transvaal only after the 2nd Boer War.  The rabbis of the principal congregations in both Johannesburg (Jewish population: 63,620) and Cape Town (Jewish population  of Cape Peninsula: 28,000) have Chief Rabbis and 65 synagogues are affiliated to the Orthodox Federation of Synagogues.

A Reform movement, started in 1933, has 14 affiliated congregations.  there is a wide network of Jewish education, with 69 nursery schools, 10 primary schools, and 8 high schools.

Stanley and Helen Goldfoot of Jerusalem
Family was from Telsiai, Lithuania, then Dublin, Ireland
It was Stanley Goldfoot who left after graduating high school and emigrated to Israel in 1933. He boarded a ship alone at age 18, and when in the middle of the ocean, the ship hoisted a Nazi flag.   He was afraid that he would never get to Israel.  He was the very first Jew to immigrate to Israel from South Africa.
In younger days, Stanley with 1st wife, Rebecca "Rollo" and 2 daughters,
born in Capetown, SA.
At the age of 18, he heard a speech about the Zionist vision by Ze'ev Jabotinsky, which
appealed very strongly to him. It was all he needed to hear before packing
a bag, leaving a shocked family and heading for Palestine. He joined a
HaShomer HaTzair kibbutz, picking eggplants in the fields, and making floor
tiles, "balatot". There, he became the Chief of Intelligence for the famous Stern Group (Lehi)  which was very active in the days before May 14, 1948 when Israel was born again.

"Israel maintained deepening military and diplomatic ties with South Africa between 1967 and 1990.  There is also a modest but growing community of South African Jews living in Israel."

A large immigration of Jews came to South Africa after World War I, when the Lithuanians came in.  Restrictions were put on them during the 1930s which limited the immigration, in which many did come that were German Jews, naturally. The 30s was the time of terrible anti-Semitism in Germany.  After 1939, when Germany closed the door to German Jews emigration, the Jewish immigration was negligible, although it has increased again starting in the 1980s.

Abba Eban b: 1915 Cape Town, South Africa-d: 2002 Tel Aviv, Israel, Israeli diplomat and politician, and a scholar of the Arabic and Hebrew languages.
He also served in the British Army in Egypt and Mandate Palestine
Another famous South African  who emigrated to Israel was Abba Eban, who was the Foreign Minister of Israel from 1966 to 1974.  "In his career he was Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister, Education Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and ambassador to the United States and to the United Nations. He was also Vice President of the United Nations General Assembly and President of the Weizmann Institute of Science.

Any emigration early on  from South African Jews had gone to Israel, but now more people have emigrated to other English-speaking countries. "South African Jewry differ significantly from those in other developing countries in that the majority of South African Jews still remain in South Africa (62% of the original 120,000 still remain), and that a significant number of those that did move abroad went to countries popular among other South African émigrés such as Australia,] the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Standing against anti-Semitism in South Africa
The remaining Jews are well-organized and have a high degree of centralization with the Board of Deputies as its representative organization.  They also have a strong Zionist Federation.  This year they have the South African Friends of Israel Conference on their calendar, the SAZF Advocacy Group (South African Zionist Federation).

Capetown, South Africa
Many Jews that wound up in South Africa originally came from Lithuania.  First they had gone to England, and then Dublin, Ireland.  From there they made their way to South Africa.  A large number of the Irish immigrants were from the shtetl or small town of Akmiyan (Akmene), or townships like that in the province of Kovno (Kaunas) in Lithuania to where their ancestors had trekked from the Rhineland before Lithuania passed from Polish to Russian control in 1772.  They had been invited in by the Polish princes who wanted to colonize their lands.  The Jews had brought the added benefit of trading expertise to areas where such commercialism was closed to serfs and considered too menial for high-born Polish families.  But they did find a certain amount of anti-Semitism later on in Ireland, being it was mostly a Catholic country.  This is the route my Goldfus/Goldfoot family took, and I found today's Goldfoots in South Africa did come from Ireland first.

Israel Keeps Morals in Fighting; Trump Needs to Learn Why

Nadene Goldfoot

Donald Trump has been talking tonight about how he would use waterboarding on ISIS terrorists to gain information need to save our American population.  He would expand the use, do something a little worse,  was his inference.

This is a pretty shocking attitude to many of us.  He had great reasoning as to why.  ISIS was cutting off heads.  They did worse than waterboarding.  The problem is, seeing such vulgar acts causes most people  to want to retaliate in kind.

I was reminded of something I had just read by Gil Troy, a professor of history at McGill University in Montreal in his article in Hadassah Magazine this month, "Courage Under Fire".
PA leader, Mahmoud Abbas

Yasser Arafat
Lately,  the PA leadership, Yasser Arafat's replacement of Abbas and his former terrorist cohorts, thought up a real doozy of a way to attack Israel without being caught so as to be labeled terrorists again.  They told lies to their Palestinian people that Israel was going to change the status of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.  In fact, they said, they want to tear down their mosque and build their Third Temple there.  At the least, they will take over the Temple Mount shortly !

Moshe Dayan, pointing.  (1915-1981) He lost an eye in 1941 when in the British army in Lebanon.  He was chief of general staff of the Israel army from 1953-8 and in 1956.  Was Minister of Defense just before 1967, resigned in 1974.
Now, the truth of the matter is that Israel, through Moshe Dayan, voluntarily let the Jordanian  Islamic Waqf have religious control there since 1967, after Israel won the 1967 War.

The PA has been "whipping up impressionable Palestinians to kill Israelis in a less violent way like the usual suicide bombings.  This time they walked by Jews and stabbed them with knives.  If that was killing too few Jews,  they got in their cars and rammed them into crowds of people, mostly in Jerusalem, which they want to take over anyway.

What has been Israel's reaction?  We use the Torah for guidance, and from it we learn we may fight when necessary, as everyone should know by now, being Israel has had to fight from the very beginning of its birth in 1948.  That was the War of Independence 1947-1949.  Then they had to fight in 1956 in The Sinai War from October 29 until November 5, 1956.   In 1967 Israel had to fight the Six-Day War from the 5th to 11th of June 1967. .  That was followed in 1973 in the Yom Kippur War.  That's been followed by Two Intefadas and many other battles.

Judaism is the religion of this tiny country, just like Islam is the religion of Pakistan and Christianity is the religion of the USA.    "Judaism is not Christianity preaching "love thy enemy," but still our sages advised us not to gloat, not to turn brutal---for our sake and our adversaries."

Mr. Troy told the story of a recent attack in Jerusalem's Mahane Yehuda market.  Two children, age 14 and 16 answered the call of the PA and stabbed an old Jewish man in his head with their scissors!  A shopkeeper came out of his shop and knocked down one of them, a girl, with a chair that was sitting outside the market.  An Israeli radio pundit interviewed him afterwards and asked him how he felt about being a hero and saving the man's life by stopping these two.

He answered that he felt terrible!  He couldn't feel happy about doing it because it was a kid that he had to stop.  His humanity is the opposite of how the Palestinian culture teaches.  They are taught to take part in this insane incitement.  They have a song to help instigate their teens.  "I'tan, I'tan (Stab, Stab).  They celebrate the killing of any Jew, no matter what their age.  They stoop low enough by teaching their children, like these young teens, to turn into murderers.  It's also what ISIS has been doing on an even grander scale.

Terrorists see Israelis as weak because they love their children and do not like to kill.  They just don't get it.  It's the Israeli's strength!  They will not lose their morality and standards just because they have to fight!

Israelis fight because they have been put into the position of fight or die, so they "fight to keep their moral compass."  Israel is fighting the Palestinians that are Hamas terrorists because they have taken on the role as Israel's enemy, in constantly trying to kill Israelis.  As long as they prefer to be Israel's enemy, Israel will fight them intensely.  Israel intends to stay strong and take pride in keeping their moral standards and not sinking as low as their enemy in their behavior.  They have standards of behavior, perhaps much stronger than the USA's standards.  With it all, they have great hopes and determination to eventually achieve peace with the enemy.
The First Geneva Convention goes back to 1864 to protect sick and wounded soldiers.
It covers such things as
treatment of prisoners of war; military necessity, along with distinction and proportionality; and the prohibition of certain weapons that may cause unnecessary suffering.  It's about  the limits to acceptable wartime conduct

Trump has not been in the army or any other service in the USA.  He hasn't been in moralist discussions about how and why it is important to keep standards in fighting.  There are international accepted laws pertaining to how to conduct oneself in a war if a soldier.  He thinks, at this time in history, that it's okay to waterboard just because ISIS has gone back to the dark ages with their cutting off heads and other disgusting way of winning a war. He's going to obey the laws now, but change them to allow waterboarding excesses.    So he's going to lower the boom because the enemy has done so.

Thank G-d Israel has not done that.  Golda Meier, Israel's past Prime Minister, has said many things about having to fight against the enemy. " A leader who doesn't hesitate before

he sends his nation into battle is not fit to be a leader."

"We do not rejoice in victories. We rejoice when a

new kind of cotton is grown and when strawberries

bloom in Israel."   "It is true we have won all our

wars, but we have paid for them. We don't want

victories anymore."    "We Jews have a secret

weapon in our struggle with the Arabs; we have no

place to go."  But the next is my favorite saying of hers.  "

1914 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Golda at age 16
Born May 3, 1898 in Kiev, Ukraine

“We can forgive the Arabs for killing our children. We cannot forgive them for forcing us to kill their children. We will only have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us."

Self-Action Leadership TRAINING for Business Professionals

Leadership Training on a Personal Level
Today's blog post explicates the practical functions of Self-Action Leadership TRAINING and consulting in organizations, especially business, corporate, and other professional or work entities.

We begin by elucidating...

The Five C's of Organizational Success

The long-term success of any business or organization is contingent on FIVE (5) fundamental ingredients: Character, Competence, Consequences, Connections, and Consistency.

Character
Competence
Consequences
Connections
Consistency

1). CHARACTER refers to who you are in terms of honesty and integrity.

2). COMPETENCE refers to your ability to think, speak, and do.  It is your capacity to efficiently and effectively complete tasks and objectives in a timely manner.

3). CONSEQUENCES refer to expectations and systems of discipline (including punitive measures) and accountability that maintain order and standards.

4). CONNECTIONS refer to who you know and work with, and how you relate with, regard, and respect them, as well as the relationships you have with human beings in general.

5). CONSISTENCY refers to the ability to endure tests of time and the adversity that accompanies it.

Any combination of these ingredients may (and often will) bring about short-term successes.  But without ALL five working synergistically together, your organization will eventually meld into the median, molder into mediocrity, or atrophy away into oblivion.

Ingredients for Sucesss

SAL Training = Corporate Recipe Gold
One of my hobbies is making chocolate chip cookies.  In the world of cooking and baking, using the correct ingredients is absolutely essential to a successful outcome.  Moreover, the quality of the ingredients, as well as the way and order in which you apply them can be as important as the ingredients themselves.  Such it is with the five C's of organizational success.

According to the SAL Model, CHARACTER must always precede everything you do.  Without good character rooted in correct principles, you'll lack a strong foundation and find yourself "building mansions upon the sand" (Ella Wheeler Wilcox) in everything you endeavor to construct—physically or metaphysically.

Without COMPETENCE, you will never accomplish anything—at least not efficiently or effectively.  Without CONSEQUENCES, there will be no accountability.  Without quality CONNECTIONS and healthy relationships, whatever CONSISTENCY you may apply will prove to be little more than the "foolish ... hobgoblin of little minds" (Emerson).  If any ingredient is missing, or improperly mixed, your final product will exit the oven soggy and distasteful—a failed exercise in culinary artistry, construction, and palatability.

The two incontrovertible KEYS to ensuring that your own batch of corporate cookies are properly made, mixed, and baked, are LEADERSHIP and EDUCATION.  You must have leaders and managers who both exemplify and execute the five C's and other SAL principles THEMSELVES and then in-turn teach, coach, and mentor their subordinates to do likewise through the pedagogical practice of...

Rote and Reiteration

There is no complete substitute for
old fashioned rote learning
However postmodernists may spin it, if the teaching and learning of correct principles is to authentically occur, there must be a degree of rote instruction and reiterative review.  In layman's terms, this means you must both implicitly model and explicitly state exactly what you desire and expect of your subordinates and then REPEAT it over and over and over and over and over and over again (5-7 times minimum before it will stick).  And even after that, indefinite reminders never hurt anybody.

There is no other way!

Click HERE to read more about postmodernism and postmodernists, and how Freedom Focused is working to put an end to this lost bygone era and replace it with an Age of Authenticism.

This may sound simple, and in theory it is.  But in actual practice, it can be very challenging.  This is because leaders must not only exemplify the standard themselves, but they must be constantly shepherding their flocks.  There is no room for letup or laziness—two inclinations to which all humans fall prey, and both of which exacerbate organizational entropy and invite further atrophy of individual character and capacity.

To illustrate how rote and reiterative leadership and education works, consider the following example from a Fortune 100 Company...

ExxonMobil's Sterling Safety Record

Giant oil tanker, similar to the Exxon Valdez vessel

On March 24, 1989, the infamous Exxon Valdez oil tanker crashed into a reef off of the coast of Alaska, spilling tens of millions of gallons of crude oil into the ocean.  Aside from the billions of dollars of cleanup cost, Exxon's reputation was marred for many years by the incident.

Fortunately, the organization learned from its mistake.  Today, partly as a result of this terrible accident over a quarter of a century ago, ExxonMobil has a sterling safety record that is envied throughout the oil and gas industry and corporate world.

Why?

Because their leaders committed themselves to exemplifying stellar safety standards, and then religiously taught those principles and expectations to their subordinates via continual rote and reiterative pedagogical practices.

My wife got a job with ExxonMobil in 2009—twenty years after the Exxon Valdez disaster.  But ExxonMobil has not forgotten.  To this day, they still drill safety standards and practices into the minds and hearts of everyone in the organization with a fervor and regularity that I would describe as religious.  Indeed, they talk about and train on the subject of safety all the time.  They also hold regular meetings—referred to as "Safety Moments"—whereby each individual (regardless of their position) receives opportunities to further herald the rules and expectations by teaching the subject themselves to their colleagues and supervisors.  This is a brilliant pedagogical strategy on ExxonMobil's part because it is widely accepted that teaching something is the best way to learn it.

Simply stated, safety has become a sacred cow at ExxonMobil—and not just on their oil tankers and offshore rigs.  They also carefully regulate safety standards at their white collar corporate campuses, including strict speed limits in and around their parking garages and other on-campus areas.

In addition, consequences are set up for those who disregard the standards.  For example, if you break the speed limit, your license plate will be photographed and you will be issued an official warning (I know, because I accidentally got photographed going 5 miles over the limit while visiting campus to lunch with my wife one day, and my wife got an email about the incident).  If you break it again, your supervisor will receive an e-mail notifying him or her of your infraction.  If you break it a third time, your Vice President will receive an e-mail.  Now how many e-mails do you think ExxonMobil Vice Presidents receive because their subordinates are speeding?  The number is probably very close to zero.

Safety is so sacrosanct at ExxonMobil that they even expect their employees to hold onto handrails when going up and down stairs.  And to encourage any OCD-type personalities like me, they ensured that their handrails were hewn out of germ-resistant material—to further encourage everyone to take their safety caveats seriously.

Self-Action Leadership Training

In order to ensure the health and SAFETY of your organization's body, mind, heart, and soul, and thereby ensure the long-term viability and prosperity of your bottom line, your company, team, and group needs comprehensive Self-Action Leadership TRAINING.  SAL Training is the key to developing WHOLE executives, managers, employees, and contractors of solid character who are competent, emotionally intelligent, team players who get results.

Our MISSION at Freedom Focused is to herald the FIVE (5) C's and other principles and practices of Self-Action Leadership with the same kind of passion and persistence that ExxonMobil heralds safety standards.  And our VISION is to see that every organization on the planet who desires this training, actually receives it.

It ALL begins with the ONE
Virtually everyone agrees—at least implicitly—that CHARACTER, COMPETENCE, CONSEQUENCES, CONNECTIONS, and CONSISTENCY are absolutely key to the long-term success of any organization or venture.

The great irony, however, is that most organizations don't end up devoting much time, effort, or capital to ensuring that everyone in their organization actually receives explicit SAL-oriented training that is regular, repeated, and rote in nature.

Doing so would require that you engage deeply in one of those pesky Quadrant 2 activities (Covey) that nearly everyone agrees is incredibly important (in theory), but almost never urgent (in actual practice) until the median has slipped into mediocrity, or the mediocre has digressed into disintegration and it is too late.

A generation ago, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People became a household name because organizations around the nation and world recognized the essential need of holistic, personal leadership training.  Freedom Focused is positioning itself to become the FranklinCovey of the 21st Century through the development of a brand new, cutting-edge self-leadership Theory & Model called Self-Action Leadership.

One of the greatest misnomers about achieving long-term success is that its recipe is enigmatic, and that if you could only decode its inscrutable formula, achieving it would be relatively simple.  In reality, the exact opposite is the case.  The recipe for success is really quite simple and basic.  The trouble is that applying it is tremendously difficult because it takes a LOT of time and energy and effort.  But in the end, there is no other way, and that is precisely why relatively few individuals or organizations are able to unearth large quantities of success.

SUCCESS!
The recipe to lasting success is simple because authentic success in any life arena ultimately boils down to an effective application of the FIVE C's and other SAL principles and practices.  Now I am not going to lie to you... actually achieving success is quite difficult because it requires Leaders and Followers who actually exemplify and then reiteratively teach the rote fundamentals without ever giving up on the simple disciplines of the basic formula.

Once again, this basic formula is: Character x Competence x Consequences x Connections x Consistency = Long-Term Existential Growth (or Success); or written in shorthand:

C5 = LTEG (S).

No matter how successful you have been in the past, or how much capital or brain power or talent you possess in the present, you will eventually falter or fail if you do not put in the hard work required to consistently apply this simple formula.  To maximize your potential and success, Self-Action Leadership oriented training must be delivered in the same way that ExxonMobil consistently models, teaches, and then reiterates their rote safety training principles and practices, that is: early, often, and always.

There is no other way.

How then have organizations in the past achieved remarkable long-term successes without Self-Action Leadership training?  After all, the SAL Theory & Model is a relatively new theoretical construct.

The answer is, they did have SAL training.  It was merely delivered in a different package (implicitly or explicitly).  With the exception of the new SAL Theory with its groundbreaking astronomical and atmospheric conceptualizations and the SAL Model with its unique construction metaphor, there is nothing new about SAL principles and practices.  SAL is simply the most creative and effective way (to date) to teach a holistic range of personal leadership knowledge and competencies.  Imagine how much better those same successful organizations might have been if they had received explicit training on this invaluable material!

Self-Action Leadership  ~  The Book

SELF-ACTION LEADERSHIP is the key catalyst for initiating transformational leadership that lasts in any organization. The truth of the matter really is that simple; and the transformation of organizations through the holistic development of individuals really is that difficult—yet altogether possible for anyone willing to invest the time, effort, and sacrifice required to achieve authentic, transformational results.

Unlike any training program that has ever preceded it, Self-Action Leadership provides a single vehicle wherewith individual self-leaders can discover—and then act—upon the great truth that HOLISTIC personal development and growth spanning the mental, moral, spiritual, physical, emotional, and social elements of our individual natures is within the grasp of each one of us.

The West Bank is Judea and Samaria.  Judea was the southern part of Israel when it divided in 920 BCE after King Solomon died.  Samaria was the land in Israel of the city and surrounding land of their capital.  95-98% of the Palestinian population lives on 40% of the Judea-Samariaan land, leaving 60% almost unpopulated.  Nablus, the largest Palestinian city in Judea-Samaria is surrounded by undeveloped land.  Most Palestinians in Judea-Samaria live in built-up cities and towns  like Nablus and Tulkarm.  Ramallah, another Palestinian city, is the political and economic center of the Palestinian Authority.

Judaism started in about 2000 -1500 BCE
Judaism is the smallest and the oldest active world religion, with 14 million people and only 1 country- Israel.

Between 5-6 million Jews make up 2% of the USA population, and 6 million make up Israel who also have 1.7 million Arabs living with them.  In 1948, there were 160,000 Palestinian Arabs who stayed inside Israel's small borders and because they stayed and did not leave, they became citizens of Israel.  Hebrew and Arabic are Israel's 2 official languages.

2 million other Jews are scattered throughout the world, such as France, Great Britain,  South Africa and others.  Jews make up 0.02% of the world population.

Israel is smaller than New Jersey, one of the USA's smallest states, which is 8,729 square miles.  Israel is only made up of 8,019 square miles.  Israel is so small that it can fit into the state of California 19 times.

Deborah, leader and Judge
Before Israel had kings, they had judges.  Deborah was one of them.  King Saul was Israel's first king in the 11th century BCE.  .  King David was the next king and was born about 1010 BCE and died in 970 BCE.  Jews came to the Promised land before they were even Jews.  It was with Abraham and Sarah who lived in the 2nd millennium BCE or about 1948 BCE..  They in turn had the son Isaac and he was the father of Jacob.  After traveling to Egypt during a famine, they stayed longer than expected and wound up as slaves for 400 years.  They returned to their homeland with Moses.  So they have been natives of Israel for over 3,000 years, and this is proven by archaeological and historical evidence as well as the biblical text.

One find of art work from the Byzantine Period of the 6th century CE was a mosaic showing King David playing the lyre.  This was found in the ancient synagogue in GAZA.  The Israel Museum reported about this.  David was said to be a gingy (red-headed).  This mosaic shows this.

There is reported to be 4,200 religions in the world today.  Some of them are: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Bahá'í Faith, Hinduism, Taoism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Slavic neopaganism, Celtic polytheism, Heathenism (German paganism), Semitic neopaganism, Wicca, Kemetism (Egyptian paganism), Hellenism, Italo-Roman neopaganism.
